LAB MEAT: Improvisation with Kathy Westwater
The practices of this lab use the human body as foundation for considering creative movement possibility. Thai yoga and contact improvisation are entry points into exploring the body. From there, this lab through various improvisational techniques address the questions: what is it like to live in my body? using my body, how can I convey the information of my experience? what is the shape of that information, the quality, the direction, the force? and, what happens when this information exists in relationship with another body and with environment? All experience levels are welcome on an ongoing and drop-in basis.

Kathy Westwater creates art that exists in the human body. Her work has been presented at Danspace Project, DTW, Brooklyn Museum, Joyce SoHo, Performance Space 122, Movement Research, Franklin Furnace @ Pseudo, and BAX. It has received critical attention in The New York Times, The Village Voice, American Theater, The Drama Review, and Dance Magazine. Now in her fifth year as guest faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, she has also been a guest teacher at Bennington College, Movement Research, and the 92nd Street Y.

EXHIBITION: From the Art of New York brings together more than 100 works of art by New York and Gulf Coast artists. The exhibition is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs February 22 – 28, 2006 from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm at the World Financial Center Winter Garden.Many of the works of art will be on sale to the public during the six-day exhibition. In addition to the artwork for sale, visitors may buy limited edition posters created by artists De La Vega and Mimi Gross and magnolia pins in honor of the Gulf Coast.
GALA AUCTION: From the Art of New York will celebrate the Gulf Coast’s rich traditions with a private Mardi Gras gala, featuring live and silent auctions as well as jazz music and delicious New Orleans-inspired cuisine. Attendees have the chance to bid on the most exclusive works of art as well as packages and memberships from MoMA, The Frick Collection, NY1 News and many more. The gala auction will be held on Mardi Gras, Tuesday, February 28, 2006 from 6:30 pm – 11:00 pm at the World Financial

Ault and Beck’s exhibition INFORMATION investigates the production of poverty within the U.S. Based on government data referring to poverty measures over the last forty years as well as the increasing income gap, Information focuses on systemic parameters for what constitutes poverty as a socio-economic standing, principally the “poverty line.” The poverty line is a concrete, abstract, and symbolic parameter or dividing device that points to governmental debates and policies relevant to economic divisions in American society.
INFORMATION takes the form of a large scale mural, inserting into Storefront’s exhibition space a visual landscape that layers aesthetic and political representations. Ault and Beck’s precise data collection and analysis speaks of an artistic strategy that exhibits an acute conceptual rigor; its minimalist aesthetics, however, is also theatrical in the sense that it makes the viewer’s position in relation to the work a key element of its visualization.
INFORMATION is a new version of Ault and Beck’s contribution to the 2004 group exhibition Borne of Necessity curated by Ron Platt for the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC. In an essay on Ault and Beck’s contribution to Borne of Necessity Jason Simon writes, “The striking accomplishment of the piece is its double engagement with the audience, first for the compelling function of scale to force one’s self identification within the data, and second, for the audience’s realization that the stakes involved in representing the poor are very high indeed. Walking along the timeline we cannot avoid the awareness of how devices such as the official poverty line, unchanged since its devising, are very much in the business of the production of poverty, the systemic institutionalizing of poverty as an undifferentiated instrument of economic policy and its professionals.”
Julie Ault and Martin Beck are artists and authors based in New York City. Their collaborations include the exhibition Outdoor Systems, indoor distribution (2000), the book project Critical Condition (2003), designs for exhibitions at ICP, New York, and Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna. In 2005, their co-curated exhibition Mirage was on view at Alexander and Bonin Gallery in New York. Ault and Beck also work individually; their individual shows include Ault’s Power Up: Sister Corita and Donald Moffett, Interlocking (1997 & 2000) and Beck’s an Exhibit viewed played populated (2003).

In February 1971, they held the Winter Soldier Investigation at a Detroit hotel. They exposed war crimes, atrocities and the truth of the American invasion. The fascinating capsule endoscopy procedure is a completely new technology, for the first time enabling the photographing of the GI passage in its entirety.
In a two-part performative demonstration, artist Phillip Warnell will undergo a live capsule endoscopy medical procedure, integrating projected visual material from his project, Host, which makes use of raw material gathered in this way. In part one, and following a period of preparatory fasting, Warnell will ingest an untethered pill sized camera, which will embark on a fantastic voyage through the nine-metre gastro-intestinal tract. In part two, following a period of waiting whilst the capsule progresses via the bodies peristaltic, muscular contractions, the camera?s radio transmissions will be downloaded to a drive and viewed/interpreted by gastroenterologist Simon Anderson through a unique software interface.
Phillip Warnell is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is balanced between perception, event & documentation. Using the body as a sound or source image, it is distinguished by its attention: to detail, to technique, to humour, to scrutiny and to the complex relationship between live performance and the mediated image.

Mary Lum has two projects currently on view. The first is a billboard, sponsored by Clockshop Inc., near the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles. Clockshop, a non-profit media and art organization based in Los Angeles, invited four artists to respond to a series of photographs titled “Destruction of House #1 by Atom Blast, taken in 1953 in Yucca Flats, Nevada. The results are on view through the end of February 2006. Lum’s billboard will be on view from January 9, to February 8, 2006. More information, and images, can be found at www.clockshop.org.
The second project is an artist’s multiple sponsored by the College Art Association’s Art Journal, and can be viewed in the current issue of the Art Journal. This reader-assembled long strip of images and text is meant to be analogous to a fragment from an unknown film. It uses as its subject, found images from the newspaper and fragments of stage directions from plays, rearranged into an uninterrupted line.

Curated by Fritz Welch “Acute Zonal Occult Outer,” will be an evolving install-action from 8th January 2006 – 18th February 2006.
In a curatorial gambit by the The Drawing Center, artists will compose a single, rigorously collaborative art installation that Welch envisions as “a massive wall drawing/sculpture mash-up.”
The amalgamation of the individual artists’ work will create a unified, if irregular, structure, and will transform the entire exhibition space. Under Welch’s guidance, the installation will act as both the origin of and the platform for performances by renowned or, as the case may be, notorious international artists who work in the fields of Neo-Actionism, Endurance, and Noise.
These are Andre Stitt, FF Alumn, (Northen Irish, lives in Cardiff, Wales), Alastair MacLennan, FF Alumn, (Scottish , lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland), Kim Jones FF Alumn, (American, lives in New York City), Crank Sturgeon (a.k.a. Matt Anderson) (American, lives in Portland, Maine), Rudolf Eb.Er (Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock) (Swiss, lives in Osaka, Japan), and Ryoga Katsuma (Japanese, lives in New York City, USA).
Through the exhibition¹s subject matter and forms, Welch hopes to create a multi-layered, subcutaneous formation on which the release of cathartic activity—without disclosing the source of the trauma—can pool, degrade, and stain. Working separately and sequentially, on different dates and for distinct lengths of time, the invited artists will be given free rein to modify the space in order to accommodate their various activities. By inviting them to participate in the exhibition, Welch is creating an impulsive and astute, anxious and persuasive relationship between live art-making and drawing.
