1. Robert Ayers has begun work at Franklin Furnace funded by the (British) Arts and Humanities Research Board and The Nottingham Trent University. His research focuses on the present relationship between physical and digital performance art, and he is taking the current Future of the Present and Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art projects as case studies. However, he is also interested in contextualising these pieces in as thorough and contemporary way as possible, and he would be interested to hear from anyone who feels that they have work or information that might inform his study. African Heritage and Photography in Cuba
The exhibition el otro lado del alma will bring together, for the first time, those contemporary Cuban photographers and video artists whose work reflects the Afrocuban Religions. These cults of African origin have played an important role in shaping Cuban culture and national identity.
La Fototeca de Cuba, Havana’s National Museum of Photography, is proud to present over 80 works by thirteen contemporary Cuban artists. The show promises to uncover new insights into el otro lado del alma, the other side of the Cuban soul.

THE DWARF, an original opera with libretto and music by Yoav Gal, will receive its world premiere at Vertical Player Repertory on January 17, 19, 24 & 26, 2003, in a scoring for chamber ensemble prepared by the composer for this production.
The Dwarf tells of the mysterious Lady Katherina Kaiser, a woman whose unfashionably capacious skirt hides her faithful lover, the dwarf Lingus. Her provocative attire arouses the obsessive interest of the cocky Chanticleer who determines to uncover her secret. He follows Lady Katherina and her dwarf to Mexico, where he drives the action to its ambiguously tragic conclusion.

Now in its fifth season, Vertical Player Repertory is dedicated to rarely heard works of the operatic repertory as well as song recital, chamber music and the spoken word. The intimate venue, a factory-turned-sculpture studio-turned-theatre, provides the audience with the opportunity to experience opera in exciting proximity to the performers. The high ceiling and brick walls offer superb acoustics. The unconventional space lends itself to inventive staging. Vertical Player Repertory is emerging as a sophisticated young company of uncommonly imaginative programming. A trip to this unusual opera theatre is not to be missed!
Past productions include Alcina; Cavalleria Rusticana; Orphée et Eurydice; Dido and Aeneas; La Voix Humaine; The Rape of Lucretia; Pierrot Lunaire; Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters; Bertha; and Fables.

San Francisco’s 111 Minna Gallery is pleased to announce the opening reception for Sci-Fi Western, a massive group exhibition of more than 100 artists featuring Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr, Gary Baseman, Isabel Samaras, Clayton Bailey, Ron English, Jeff Soto, and Eric White.
Do you remember when ancient adventurers went west to create nothing less than a New World? It started with the ludicrous idea that the world was round. Do you remember in the 60’s, the dream come true of 20th century men walking on the moon? It started with science-fiction writers imagining rockets in space; dreams that lead to the shaping of the western world in which we now live. Sci-Fi Western curator Sunny Buick felt a tribute is in order for these space and western pioneers; 100 visionary artists agreed and answered to her call. Each artist was asked to provide their stylized fusion of past and future, out of history and fantasy.
The show will be open through March 29th, with a closing party on March 29th, 6-10pm.
