Penny Arcade’s Rebellion Cabaret with singer/songwriter, composer Chris Rael, is bound for a week of performances at Sydney, Australia’s famed Opera House Feb 26th thru March 4th. In preparation for these shows join Penny and Chris at FEZ under Time Cafe 380 Lafayette St @ Great Jones St Friday Jan 7th 8pm $20 as they choose which elements will make it into the final cut of the show.

PENNY ARCADE, the legendary creator of the long-running Off-Broadway hit BITCH!DYKE!FAGHAG!WHORE!, teams up with singer/songwriter CHRIS RAEL to present REBELLION CABARET at Fez beginning January 7th. Workshopped over the past two years at Ars Nova and The Gershwin Hotel, this limited engagement will lead up to the World Premiere of the piece at The Sydney Opera House in Australia in February.
REBELLION CABARET is an all-new “rant-n-roll” evening of insightful and hysterically funny monologues by Penny Arcade underscored and interspersed with Chris Rael’s sophisticated, topical lyrics, memorable arrangements and soaring vocals. REBELLION CABARET tears away the veil from the commodification of rebellion, sexual politics, Paris Hilton, bourgeois bohemia, The Vagina Monologues, America’s new patriotism and the Gospel According to Dubya.
Performance artist PENNY ARCADE (born Susana Ventura) has been creating her own unique theatrical presentations since 1985. Her works have been produced internationally in cities including Vienna, Melbourne, Calgary, Vancouver, London, Munich, Dublin, Zurich, and Edinburgh and nationally in cities including Boston, Miami, Tampa and LA. Penny Arcade debuted at age 17 with The Playhouse of the Ridiculous, the seminal glitter rock queer theater of the 1960’s. She was a teenage superstar featured in the Warhol/Morrissey film Women in Revolt. She has collaborated with numerous artists in a variety of disciplines, including Jack Smith, Jackie Curtis, Charles Ludlam, John Vacarro and Quentin Crisp.
CHRIS RAEL is the sitar mastermind behind the Indo-Pop band Church of Betty, widely considered the most skillful blender of Indian and western rock music. According to the Village Voice, “Chris Rael has consistently blended rock and Indian music better than anyone else, ever” while Magnet Magazine calls him “a purveyor of urban psychedelia, with a voice sweeter than Prince.” For the show, Rael will play sitar, electric guitar and Portuguese guitar.

David Medalla, FF Alumn, has been invited by German art historian Daniel Biirnbaum to give a talk at the Stadeschule in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, on January 14, 2005. Medalla will preface his talk with the showing of “Odaya”, a film by Fritz Stolberg of a performance by David Medalla in 2001, inside the underground shell-encrusted grotto in Margate on the Kent coast of southern England. Medalla will follow his talk with the showing of a video by Arvinder Bawa of the finale of London Biennale 2004 at Crystal Palace, London, and a film by Divid Medalla, entitled “Homage to Arthur Rimbaud”, made during “Les Rencontres” in Dover last November 2004. Medalla’s beautiful film is a White Window Production in collaboration with L’Ecole de la Rue of the Maison de la Jeune Culture of Dunquerque, France, and the Creative Foundation of Folkestone, England. From Frankfurt, David Medalla will proceed to the Schloss Balmoral at Bad Ems, where he will participate in an artistic salon to be conducted by Daniele Perriere on February 16, 2005. From the Schloss Balmoral, David Medalla will continue his German peregrinations to Berlin where he will be a guest of Adam Nankervis, Mona Wehr and Prinz Moritzio, at Museum MAN Berlin. While in the German capital, David Medalla has also been invited by Frederick Meschede to the inauguration of the new DAAD Gallery in Berlin. David Medalla was a DAAD artist. The Idaho Center for the Book traveling exhibition provides a unique and inspiring panorama of books and drawings by autistic, self-taught Idaho artist/bookmaker James Castle (1899-1977). Previously exhibited in New York City, Chicago, Canada, and England, the ICB show, in addition to rare, early Castle works recovered in an Idaho icehouse, now features additional art works and recently discovered Early Attic visual narratives by Castle, “translated” for the first time.

Colourlines
I draw one blue line after another until the picture has become full of blue lines. I then draw red lines until it seems that the blue lines are going to be rendered invisible. I then finish off with green lines. Blue lines and red lines can be seen in various places between the green lines. Computer images change into different images when I click with a mouse on a line.
When I was a child, I used to amuse myself by dreaming up various stories as I gazed on the lines formed by cracks in the wall. The lines looked different from one day to the next together with changes in the viewer¹s own spirit, consciousness and feelings. The very same line would take on a different meaning, or another line would appear and amplify the images. Images expand and contract within colour. Images become restricted or expand to infinity through the effects of colour. Colourlines is an attempt to show how chance and necessity sway ambivalently at the point of contact between the unconscious and the conscious worlds.

Dear Friends,
You know how last week I invited you to GATZ, the ERS show that I’m in? Well, because of a last minute copyright snafu, we have had to officially cancel the public performances of the show. BUT I am now re-inviting you to an OPEN REHEARSAL of the work, which will be shown for friends and colleagues only (you must make an appointment to come, using the URL below, which has all the details).
These rehearsals will take place on a surprisingly similar schedule as the performances would have. So, although I know this could cause some confusion, I really hope you can
make the show; I think it’s a beautiful experience.
Here’s the official story from ERS:
After lengthy negotiations, the Fitzgerald estate has denied us permission to read The Great Gatsby in a public performance.
So unfortunately we’ve had to cancel our public performances of Gatz this month.
However, we do hope to mount the show publicly in the future, and we will continue to rehearse during January, running the show in sequence, and we’d like to invite you, our friends, to these private showings.

Hal Bromm was an early champion of many significant artists who helped create the raucous, culturally-charged East Village scene. Instrumental in bringing attention to their work, Bromm’s gallery was one of the first to show David Wojnarowicz, Luis Frangella, John Fekner, Rick Prol, Mark Kostabi and many others. Keith Haring’s first one-person exhibition in New York was at Hal Bromm in 1981.
In 1984, Hal Bromm Gallery provided early exposure to the growing East Village movement by organizing “Climbing”, a major group exhibition with works by 25 artists. “Climbing” presented fresh, exciting and innovative new art by many rising stars, including Kiki Smith, David Wojnarowicz, Luis Frangella, Judy Glantzman, Walter Robinson, Mike Bidlo, and Martin Wong. In an introduction to the exhibition, Carlo McCormick wrote that “Climbing” was “a search for the most promising of the lot…looking at a few trees in the forest”. In 2005, Vintage East Village provides a new view of that forest, 20 years later.

15. Susan Hiller, FF Alumn, at Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland, opens Jan. 29
Susan Hiller is one of the most intriguing and influential artists working in Europe today. Her daring and thought-provoking work is informed by conceptual practice. Although the artist employs procedures of systematization such as cataloging and indexing, and uses seemingly neutral formats such as ‘collection’ or ‘record’, her work often involves highly idiosyncratic accounts of unusual personae and deals with uncanny phenomena.
We at the Kunsthalle Basel are very happy to host the first major institutional exhibition of Susan Hiller in continental Europe. The show itself has been curated by James Lingwood and was first presented last year in a different form at the BALTIC, the Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England.
By no means a retrospective, the show is a representative and coherent selection from Susan Hiller’s oeuvre of the last thirty years and includes two major sound installations. In the Oberlichtsaal we present Witness, 2000, a multilingual collection of stories told by anonymous individuals who went through ‘close encounters’ and other visionary experiences. In these stories, the truth of eyewitness accounts merges with subjective expressions of belief and with collective narrative structures of the unconscious, the stories remain more or less the same across different cultures and are passed down throughout generations. In the last room of the ground floor we show Clinic, 2004, a work that explores the contents of one specific type of human perception that puts the scientistic construction of knowledge in question – the near-death experience. The third installation in Basel is PSI Girls, 1999, a monumental five-channel video piece in which the excerpts from different Hollywood movies show girls with supernatural abilities. The work attests to the powerful appeal of the unconscious within the production of the most cliched of images.
The show includes the often quoted piece Dedicated to the Unknown Artists, 1972-1976, a collection of postcards with views of rough sea. While formally in keeping with conceptual art’s notorious procedures of researching, classifying and indexing, the work draws on vernacular imagery and unravels an ambiguous, romantic content. In similar mode, Inside a Cave Home, 1983, has images of the sea hand-painted on large reproductions of a postcard showing the banal setting of a living room in the Australian outback.
It is also very exciting for the Kunsthalle Basel to be able to show for the first time three series of photographs from The J-Street Project, 2003-2005, a new cycle conceived during the artist’s DAAD residency in Berlin. This authoritative work represents a photographic investigation of specific places in Germany – streets in big cities as well as forgotten country roads – that have the word ‘Jude’ (Jew) in their names. As is the case with many works by Susan Hiller, these linked series, called “Brandenburg Suite”, “Snow Scenes” and “Country Roads” form part of a more extensive on-going project that will culminate in a video installation on which the artist is working at present.
The exhibition is a collaborative project of BALTIC, Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead; Museu de Arte Contempornea de Serralves, Porto and Kunsthalle Basel.
A German translation of the English catalogue will be published for the exhibition.
