Guest curators include TOBIAS BERGER, executive director and curator at Para/Site, a non-profit contemporary art space in Hong Kong founded by artists in the 1990’s; MICHAEL CONNOR, head of exhibitions at the British Film Institute in London, where he is currently developing a new exhibition space dedicated to artists’ film and video; and JAMES PEI-MUN TSANG, an artist and feminist organizer who lives in Los Angeles. Exhibition Concept:
In celebration of a new year and the diversity of art and culture in New York, Korean Culture Service (NY) has organized < Moving Time: Tribute to Nam June Paik, a media exhibition showing 30 international artists. As its title indicates, the exhibition’s primary objective is to give homage to one of the most revered pioneer video artists of the world, Nam June Paik, by presenting his earlier video works from the 60s and the 70s. We are pleased and honored to be able to introduce such rare works to the general public. Also, by projecting artists within the global- or even what we call a glocal i.e. New York- community, the exhibition wishes to provide an arena of interchange for younger media artists and to understand the idiosyncracy and phase of contemporary video art and to consider video art’s meanings and development possibilities.
Explanation of the Title:
The title makes use of the words Moving and Time in their fullest meaning and their symbolic extensions. The viewers should be able to exercise their cognition, perception and imagination to engage with works of art or more specifically with video as technical subject and medium. For example, word Moving Time should be understood in relation to its noun and verb forms. It could be referring to a time for change, migration, journey back to memory, fast forwarding, rewinding etc.. The possibility of interpretation is endless.

COMES TO PEAK PERFORMANCE AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY
JANUARY 20TH AND 21ST.
LAND OF DREAMS: A VAUDEVILLE REQUIEM conceived, directed and choreographed by Charles Moulton comes to Peak Performance at Montclair State University Friday January 20th and Saturday, January 21st at 7:30 at the Kasser Theatre. Charles Moulton is perhaps best known for the prominence he attained in the late 70’s for his choreographic work and the string of virtuosic dances in the 80’s, regarded then and now as post-modern classics. He was also amongst the pioneers who co-founded the groundbreaking Performance Space 122, and was a prime mover in the Lower East side arts scene. He uses all these experiences plus, his family’s vaudeville background to create a bawdy, touching, hilarious and often heartbreaking new work.
LAND OF DREAMS: A VAUDEVILLE REQUIEM is an elegy to the dream of a brash and hopeful America that never existed. As if shot out of a cannon, the show’s 7 virtuosi performers, create a postmodern juggernaut of slapstick, street theater, dance and clowning in a sensational effort to exorcise Moulton’s own personal history of 20th century performance. Employing text by two such divergent sources as Thornton Wilder and Vladimir Mayakovsky, and music by Randy Newman, Moulton creates a work as American as a hot and bubbling apple pie, washed down by a vodka chaser. By boldly employing children’s party balloons in unacceptable ways, the enterprising and audacious Moulton risks bringing his career to a screeching climax or positing himself, once again, as the Comeback Kid of Post Modern Dance!
Fresh from City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival where his signature routine, “48 Person Precision Ball Passing”, brought down the house, Charles Moulton promises to break every rule of dance imaginable with Land of Dreams, boldly blending genres to capture the joys and perils of the American experience.

The intensity of their suffering is in stark relief to the mundane environment from which it springs. The depth of these psychological portraits inspired composer/lyricist Rael to re-tell the stories in words and music accentuating the universal human experience of Joyce’s characters. The beauty and horror in these stories could happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. Araby explores the grey area between popular music, chamber music, and musical theater. Fifteen short stories are recounted in 3-to-6-minute songs, arranged for six singers and chamber ensemble. This work-in-progress will focus on vocal performance, creating the effect of a minimally staged concert. Vocalists: Brian Dewan, John Kelly, Chris Rael, Dudley Saunders, Gwen Snyder, Shara Worden. Happy New Year! Hope everyone’s holidays were good and we are all re-charged for culture-making, world-changing, seats-filling, hearts opening performance adventures!

Exciting news! I have a new book and performance coming soon! At theaters and bookstores near you! I will have a new performance called “1001 Beds” based on my brand new book of the same name that will be out in March 06 from University of Wisconsin Press. It’s a kinky and funny journey thru the beds and hotels and politics of a life on the road as a traveling salesman- oops I mean a solo performance artist! I was doing the math recently and I figured that if I continue to tour as a performer for another twenty years, I will end up sleeping in at least 1000 hotel beds in my lifetime on the road. For maximum poetic oomph, let’s say 1001 beds! Yikes! The book “1001 BEDS” will be out in Feb and is a collection of my essays, performances, manifestos, performance touring stories from Tokyo to Chattanooga and my journals. Will be a fun and fierce new performance based on excerpts from the book. More info to follow as we get closer to the pub date and the premiere of the new show in March at New Conservatory Theatre in S.F.
Meanwhile, I am really looking forward to my busy winter of performing. I will be doing many juicy University performance & teaching residencies this Winter at Muhlenberg College, Savannah College of Art and Design, Roosevelt University and Wake Forest University. “For the first time in history, the majority of American citizens live in the suburbs,” writes curator Ellen Keiter in her catalogue essay for the exhibition I ♥ the Burbs. A multimedia exhibition I ♥ the Burbs explores how this major demographic shift has influenced American culture, economics, lifestyle and politics is expressed in works by contemporary artists. Paintings, photographs, sculpture and video presentations created by Diane Arbus, Beaumont, Gregory Crewdson, David Hockney, Bill Owens, Joel Sternfeld and Larry Sultan, among others, delve into the myths and realities of modern day suburban life.
Artists examine the icons of suburban life—the home, the lawn, and the family—and question whether the American dream is still alive. They also explore the communal character of suburbia: the automobile, the neighborhood, and unbridled suburban sprawl. I—the Burbs is not a sociological study but rather an expanding discourse on the predominant way of life for most Americans.
