Brecht Machine will debut at the SPLIT, International Festival of Film and New Media. The remote hookup will feature two performers, one in New York and one in SPLIT. In SPLIT the performer will speak in French and in New York the Performer will speak in English. The programming interface will translate each performer language into the other. At each location the translation will be automatically spoken by a synthetic voice. Since the dictation and translation systems are imperfect, expect quite a bit of poetic mayhem and unexpected translation goofs!!

Hybrid Instruments, a selection of over seventy of Butler’s works dating from 1978 to the present, and Projection Grand Piano, a new interactive audio-visual keyboard installation, opened Sept.10th.
Projection Grand: An Incandescent Keyboard is an interactive audio-visual grand-piano-scaled assemblage sculpture constructed of reconfigured objects, projectors, lamps, and miscellaneous electrical parts that mechanically projects dazzling complex light patterns at the stroke of its keys. When “played” by the viewer-participant the keyboard projects overlapping moving images of white light and shadow on a wall and surfaces of a darkened exhibition area, activating the entire space with light, motion, and minimal sound all emanating from the keyboard itself.
Judith Page, essayist for the exhibition catalog, writes, “All of Butler’s instruments are playable to some extent. Some, however, are more playable and are used in performances; while others function more visually – their voices created in the viewer’s mind.”
Since 1980, Butler has participated in over 80 exhibitions, most including his hybrid instruments; created 22 large installations, the majority with interactive components; and produced 26 multimedia performances. In addition, Butler has also performed with his hybrid instruments as the “Voices of Anxious Objects” more than 1,000 times.
Butler will present a live performance at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 1 in the Garret Theatre. Tickets for the public performance may be reserved one month in advance for $5 per person. Organized by Queens International artist Jaishri Abichandani, Magic & Alchemy includes performances by Burnt Sugar, Maritess, Danny Pollock, and La Bruja. Burnt Sugar, an “all-terrain music vehicle” led by music critic/Black Rock pioneer Greg Tate. The crowd-moving, free-form orchestra uses drums, guitars, bass, synthesizes, pianos, cello, flute, trumpet and vocal in improvisations that combine jazz, punk rock, funk, drum and bass, ambient noise, and contemporary African music. Maritess, a Philippine magician, plays to the crowd with her humorous sleight-of-hand tricks, illusions, and mind readings. Israeli-born, New York-based dancer and teacher Danny Pollock performs Israeli and Arab folk dance. Performance poet, actor, and dancer La Bruja’s spoken-word works combine poetry, slide photography, original hip-hop and Caribbean music.
Also on September 22, one lucky audience member will be chosen o have a go at Dave McKenzie’s Self-Portrait Piñata (2002), a candy-filled likeness of the artist, and filmmaker Larry Litt will debut The Blame Show Queens, a documentary video made for Queen International. For this work, Litt asked QMA visitors to voice their opinions on the current state of political, economic and social affairs in the Homeland. Their responses are edited into a 10-minute video that will be part of the exhibition. Flux Factory, an artist collective participating in the exhibition, will screen documentation of their ongoing performances and activities at the museum.

Offering artifacts of popular culture placed alongside the work of artists skeptical of America’s renewed devotion to its flag, the exhibition POP Patriotism addresses the implications of this recent trend. The explosion of patriotic fervor that first swept across the country last fall and winter, seemingly justified by the trauma caused by what occurred in September, has a less than wholesome side that appears to have little to do with a simple pride in one’s nationality. Focusing on the mass marketing of national sentiment and nostalgia engaged in by the media, fashion and entertainment industries, the artwork included in POP Patriotism reflects a skepticism towards the propagandistic and commercial opportunism that has been so prevalent in the past several months.
This patriotic revivalism, having initially provided a rallying point for explosive emotions like defiance or revenge, also tapped into the urge to belong to something bigger than one’s own concerns. Perhaps alienated by a regular diet of overnight successes celebrated in the media at the close of the 90’s, the public’s impulse to identify with issues other than the rise and fall of dotcoms was deftly exploited by anyone looking for the “next big thing”. Exhibiting mass-produced patriotic objects within the context of artworks that confront the underlying anxieties of this moment, the goal of POP Patriotism, in part, is to raise questions about the political and mercantile efforts to manipulate and cajole a tense and uncertain public.
As the novelty of American flags overwhelming the landscape subsides, the iconography of patriotism has settled into the nooks and crannies of the country’s unconscious, functioning like worry beads that are massaged without thought; a comforting ritual collectively engaged in. POP Patriotism intends to focus on this ritual, offering an ironic perspective on a recent cultural phenomenon that has yet to be fully examined.

Monday, Sept. 23, A Benefit for the Bowery Mission! The oral tradition is a large part of the Bowery Poetry Club’s mission, and tonight we’ll hear the tales of Bowery locals — the last days of the flops, skid row, life up and down and out on the Bowery and a rare reading by street poet Orion. Dave Isay, radio producer and author of Flophouse, will host. On the Bowery Art Wall: the Flophouse portraits of photographer Harvey Wang will be on display. Special performance by Uncle Jimmy’s Dirty Basement.
Tuesday Sept 24: Meet 308-310 Bowery! besides the Bowery Poetry Club, our building is home to the DVDojo, BPC’s sister club, who minister technology to project the art of poetry (among other “content”): digital video, please! And Washington Square Films and Arts is upstairs, the crew who brought you the award-winning PBS series, The United States of Poetry. Washington Square also books many performers, including Eric Bogosian, who will be tonight’s featured performer. Also on the bill are members of this year’s National Poetry Slam Championship team, Urbana, who represent the Bowery Poetry Club. Open seven days from 9am’s first cup of Inspiration Java till midnight’s Last Call for the Open Mike, the Bowery Poetry Club is a comfy new home for poetry. Here’s where you can browse the small press bookstore, visit with a poet barista, drink an Allen Ginsberg or a Gertrude Wine. Tonight, the poets come home to cut the umbilical ribbon to Shelley’s Cloud Cuckoo Land incarnate. You’ll hear from such po’ stars as Sekou Sundiata, Sapphire, Hal Sirowitz, Steve Cannon, Maggie Estep, David Henderson, John S Hall, Jessica Hagedorn, John Rodriguez, Max Blagg, and Jerry Rothenberg and others. Our resident composer-conductor, Butch Morris, will conduction these poets in a true Morris Chorus of Voices to conclude the evening, sweetly, sourly.
And then, and officially, we’re OPEN FOR PO-BUSINESS.

In late September, a contingent of international artists based in the UK will join, and in some cases collide with, a group of NYC-based artists for several nights of exhibition and performance that promises to be both hedonistic and intellectually provoking . . . and to reek of a voluptuous, fecund, and visceral affirmation of life.” This daring group of artists, including a sizable contingent that has been continent surfing as part of the Welsh ‘New Wave’, is intent upon blurring boundaries between life and art and between artforms, as it examines sexuality and the role of artists as archeologists digging in the ruins of life, rich in its unadulterated love of the sensuality purposely ignored by polite society.
Stimulata not only challenges viewers to question society’s proscriptions for what constitutes deviance and acceptability in the arenas of gender and sexuality, but also involves a more direct challenge. tactileBOSCH’s Simon Mitchell and Duncan Sturrock, (aka Impact Invaders) known for blending the performance tradition of fine art with extreme sports and rugby culture, have issued a challenge to David Leslie, NYC’s renowned Impact Addict, who has accepted their challenge. The Village Voice recently ran a feature story on the Impact Addict, a performance artist/would-be pugilist, who invites all comers to attempt to knock him out. Leslie recently upped the ante by challenging retired boxer George Cooney to don the gloves and protective head gear and attempt to KO Leslie. Cooney, and Riddick Bowe, another retired professional boxer, have both failed to knock out Leslie. The art-scarred Invaders will bring the hurt to Leslie in the form of what may be a tag team match. Other entertainments in store include examination of filth and degradation, strip-tease and pin-ups in full multi-media onslaught of live art meets the static in performance, painting, video, photography, installation and surroundsound melodrama that will conjure alt perspectives on activities moralists would deem damnned to darnation.
An prior incarnation of Stimulata, held in Cardiff, Wales in 2001, was praised by author and art professor Hugh Adams as a group of “half-shaman, half-bohemian” creators which channels the art Happenings that bridged the “gap between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.” Anchored by co-curators Kim Fielding and Coralee Lynn Rose, the prurient and provocative performances and exhibits may well melt down the Siberia. Other Stimulata goings-on include an opening at Galapagos gallery in Brooklyn on September 25 and a musical benefit at Arlene Grocery on October 1.

On Friday, September 20, Patriotism and Dissent will be the subject of the fifth annual Day of Community symposium, hosted by Mary Schmidt Campbell, Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts, and the Center for Art and Public Policy. This event gives artists and scholars an opportunity to come together to discuss issues of common concern. The event will take place in the Great Hall at Cooper Union, 7 East 7th Street @ Third Avenue.
The symposium will examine the complex relationship between the nature of national allegiance during times of emergency and the commitments to critical inquiry and challenging expression that make the work of artists and intellectuals central to a democratic polity. Writer, scholar and law professor Patricia Williams is the keynote presenter. Panels will focus on the events, policy and creative responses of the past year as evident in both mainstream and alternative media, policy, and the arts. Faculty, students, alumni, and guest speakers, including prominent artists and critics, will participate in the panels.

The 8th City of Women International Festival of Contemporary Arts opens on Monday, October 7. During the twelve days of the festival – through Friday, October 18 – City of Women will present over thirty events with artists and theoreticians from over twenty countries.
This year the festival intends to challenge the construct of Europe as a unified geopolitical region with common, homogenous values and a common cultural history. The programme wants to underline the multi-ethnic, trans-cultural, and hybrid nature of European culture, arts and policies.
The City of Women Festival is being organised by the Association for the Promotion of Women in Culture, in co-production with Cankarjev dom.

Two experimental videos about the genetic revolution will be shown September 22 at Village East Cinemas in New York City as part of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. Both videos are by Mary Klein.
COME CLOSER investigates the ethics of genetic engineering through a collage of early 1900s eugenics propaganda film, animation and contemporary interviews with scientists and with Gloria Rhoden, called the smallest woman in the world.
This video will be shown with a Marion Cheeks’ documentary on the creative spirit of Aboriginal and settler communities in Labrador and Sarah Elgart’s docu-drama on young people’s hopes and fears s as they face critical and terminal illness.
ONE BREATH explores how genetic engineering blurs the boundaries between what is real and unreal. It shows with five other animated pieces and a feature comedy called Ecnomics 101 on an insecure college professor’s attempts to teach a group of dysfunctional freshmen.

Born in Argentina, Susana Cook is a New York based performance artist who has been writing and producing original work for over 16 years.. Her work takes on interwoven themes of segregation, based on class, race, nationalism and homophobia with an ensemble involving mainly women of color. She performed and taught workshops at Columbia University, Oberlin College, Yale University and at The Bronx Museum of The Arts.
