Alyson Pou’s “The Garden; The Fall; The Tea Party,” questions the juxtaposition of movement and isolation. Through image, text, dialogue, dance, movement and more, Pou captures the feeling of loneliness and the impact of violence in her performance invoking the senses and sadnesses of her fellow performers. A collage of snippets, this 9-minute video showcases footage of “The Garden; The Fall; The Tea Party,” performed at Franklin Furnace on January 22, 1987. Pou invites her audience to consider the complexity of one’s actions and how the ways we move reflect our perceptions of the world. (Text by Zaria George).

Weeping Mary was composed by Matthew Petty after spending time in Weeping Mary, TX and meeting the eldest descendants of those freed slaves whose land was stolen. Mr. Petty asked me to record the song in his studio while we were Lucas Artist Fellows at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, CA. It was recorded in 2018 and today we can feel the profound resonance for the times in which we are living. It is time to be shared. Listen, weep, mourn, love, and keep moving. Dear art lovers and media colleagues:
My article about an exhibition of drawings made by the American self-taught artist Frank Jones (1900-1969), which are rarely seen in quantity, has been published in HYPERALLERGIC. The current show is on view at Shrine, a gallery in New York City’s Lower East Side district, near the border with Chinatown. The exhibition remains on view through September 13, 2020. Nine of Jones’s remarkable drawings are on display at Shrine.
Jones, an African American who was born in rural, northeastern Texas, near Oklahoma, created his unusual drawings while serving a sentence at the state penitentiary in Hunstville, Texas, north of Houston, for a murder he claimed he had not committed.
Jones was born with a caul: part of the fetal membrane covered his left eye. In the society in which he grew up, it was believed that such children were “double-sighted” and could communicate with the spirit world. Throughout his life, Jones claimed that he could see supernatural beings — animated objects, animal-like creatures, demons — which he called “haints” (“haunts”), “devils,” or “haint devils.”
In the 1960s, as an inmate, he began making drawings on found scraps of paper with the stubs of blue-and-red accountants’ pencils. In them, he developed his “devils’ houses” motif — wiry-looking structures depicted in cross-section, in which his omnipresent, horned, bird-like “haints” resided. By depicting the demons he claimed to be able to see, Jones gave visible form to his spirit sightings and also contained or curtailed what he perceived to be their mischievous, potentially harmful powers.
With their fantasy architecture, rich patterning, and mysterious auras, Jones’s drawings have become highly sought after by collectors. Shrine’s current exhibition offers an opportunity to examine his art up close and, relatively speaking, in depth.

Jonathan Berger, An Introduction to Nameless Love takes the form of a large-scale sculptural installation that includes over 533,000 tin, nickel, and charcoal parts, Berger’s exhibition chronicles a series of remarkable relationships, creating a platform for complex stories about love to be told. The exhibition draws from Berger’s expansive practice, which comprises a spectrum of activity — brought together here for the first time — including experimental approaches to non-fiction, sculpture and installation, oral history and biography-based narratives, and exhibition-making practices.
Co-organized by Participant Inc and Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University.

The Bayerische Staatsoper opened their 2020–2021 season with Marina Abramović’s opera 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. The presentation will be available on demand from September 7 – October 7, 2020.
7 Deaths of Maria Callas is a continuation of Marina Abramović’s lifelong meditation on the female body as a source of both power and pain. In this performance, Abramović turns her focus to renowned opera singer Maria Callas, whose stunning soprano voice captivated audiences around the world in the mid-20th century. Through a mix of narrative opera and film, Abramović recreates seven iconic death scenes from the American-born Greek singer’s most important roles—in La Traviata, Tosca, Otello, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor and Norma—followed by an interpretive recreation of Callas’ own death performed onstage by Abramović herself.
“I
see a lot of myself in Callas,” Abramović said. “We’re both Sagittarius, we’re both intensely emotional, but fragile at the same time. I almost encountered a similar fate,” she added, saying that Callas died from a broken heart. “The difference [is that] my work saved me,” Abramović says that the opera work is about female empowerment. “I wanted to show the strength and perseverance that a woman can have,” she said. “Not all heartbreak ends in tragedy. I believe in hope.”

I am happily participating in Art Off-Screen, an international exhibition, organized by Eileen Jeng Lynch, of artwork and performances in outward-facing locations around the globe. In response to pause orders during the pandemic, Art Off-Screen showcases works that can be viewed from the outside by the community, providing access to art beyond a computer screen —inspiring creativity, amplifying voices, encouraging change, and sharing messages of hope and healing. Employing a variety of mediums and sites, artists create new work and/or explore new directions as well as ways of how their art is seen or experienced. Artists address issues surrounding the pandemic, racial violence, social injustice, climate change as well as reflections on their artistic practices, among other topics.
The work will be on view through September 14, 2020 in Suttons Bay, Michigan.

I am pleased to have two prints selected for Collar Works 2020 Flat Files. Collar Works’ Flat File aims to exhibit a range of diverse, two-dimensional works by emerging and underrepresented artists. The mission of the program is to promote selected artists’ work, create a space for affordable art, enhance current exhibition opportunities, and expand + enrich the Collar Works community. All works featured are sized 16”x20” or below and priced under $450. Individual works from the Flat File will be selectively highlighted throughout the year in the gallery, and online. I have two large scale drawings of Murderous Women in the show and on October 17th from 2-6pm, I am organizing a performance of A Remedy for a Constitutional Crisis, a multilingual reading by multiple performers of the United States Constitution. This event is participatory so I hope you will join us!

Power T’s Fundraiser (and Totes and Masks)
Two years ago, before the 2018 mid-term elections, Lisa Gold, Mike Ballou, and Pierogi organized a Power Ts event to raise money to help take back control of the House and regain a sense of hope from the downward spiral that the current administration was taking us. We asked artists to do what they do best: to create artwork that spoke to the moment. We set up a website and installed an exhibition of the works at Pierogi where people could choose an artwork to be printed on T-shirts and tote bags. Together we raised more than $20,000, which was donated to Swing Left to target specific candidates and locations to turn the House blue!
We’re bringing Power T’s back once again for the November elections and we’re ready to raise even more to help make it a full sweep. Late August through September 2020, we will post available artworks on the Pierogi website. These will be offered on T-shirts, tote bags, as well as facemasks this time because, well, you know why. Unfortunately, this year we won’t be able to hold an opening reception where the Ts and other items are produced on demand in the sweat scented gallery. All orders can be purchased online, by phone, or at the gallery, and will be available for either pick up inside the gallery or curbside, from mid- through mid-October (exact dates to be announced). T-shirts and tote bags will be $45 each and facemasks $20 each. This panel explores how creative experimentation with EEG technology has inspired new approaches to making sense of affective communication, body-mind relations, and consciousness. It brings together foremost representatives of visual art, music, new media, and cognitive neuroscience who have pioneered the use of biofeedback in art and revealed how entwined people are in physical and social relations that may elude their awareness. The panel investigates the agency of artists, scientists, and participants in choreographing states of mental and bodily attunement through interaction with visual and acoustic environments shaped by oscillating brain rhythms. It looks into the role of aesthetics and collaborative experimentation in interdisciplinary inquiries into the workings of the embodied mind.
At a time of increased social distancing, the panel sets out to examine if consciousness of neural and bodily entanglement can generate mindfulness by undermining egocentric models of understanding our interaction with the world. It also asks if such connections can be established even when participants are not found in close proximity or have no prior acquaintance. Last but not least, it invites brainstorming on the ecology of invisible entanglements and means of enacting change in a complex field of social relations.

I know covid has put a kibosh on goings on and being about in the city but we at Le Petit Versailles have been open since July and invite you again to visit my installation

Bradley Eros is also projecting at LPV as part of MORUS Film Fest on Thursday night 9/10 at 7:30pm. with Live Music. Folks will be able to enter garden socially distanced and limited numbers of 3 at a time or view from the sidewalks on 2nd St.
Otherwise I’m sitting alone with my own projections Tuesday and Wednesday Nights 8-10pm. Would love to see you on our turf.
