1. Pablo Helguera, FF Alumn, at Far Rockaway Public Library, Queens

Finally, after 12 years of hard work, my Percent for Art public art project opened to the public this past week. It is at the new Far Rockaway Public Library in Queens, designed by Snohetta.

The project is inspired in the Far Rockaway native, American theoretical physicist and Nobel prize in physics Richard Feynman. In 1948, Feynman became known for creating a series of diagrams which are visual representations of the interaction and behavior of subatomic particles. Feynman’s diagrams became a vital shorthand to understand and visualize complex mathematical equations and calculations in physics.

Feynman himself was passionate about learning and knowing. He used to tell the story that as a child his father would sit him on his lap and would read to him from the Encyclopedia Britannica, about things like dinosaurs, like the Tyranosaurus rex, the Brontosauruses and such- not the typical children’s story I suppose. But to Feynman, the world was an inscription for us to read, to decode, to learn from.

I used elements from Feynman’s diagrams to create an alphabetical code that spells out two quotes, one by the American poet Emily Dickinson, which is  “The Brain is Wider than the Sky”, and another, by Feynman himself, which is “I , a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe.” They are 86 engraved panels, designed to remain permanently at the library.

I am grateful to @reismansara @tomfinkelpearl @kendalhenry @sergiopardolopez @singyatut the Percent for Art Program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York City Department of Design and Construction, Snohetta, the construction crew,  and of course the staff at the Queens Public Library for their generous support of this project.

2. Sheryl Oring, FF Alum, at Monmouth University, NJ, Sept. 3-Dec. 20

DiMattio Gallery presents “I Wish That I Had Spoken Only of It All: 20 Years of Sheryl Oring’s I Wish to Say”

Exhibition: Sept. 3 to Dec. 20

DiMattio Gallery, Rechnitz Hall, 400 Cedar Avenue, Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ

Artist talk: Sept. 19, 4:30-5:30 pm

Opening reception: Sept. 19, 5:30-7:30 pm

With backgrounds in journalism and fine art, Sheryl Oring began her ongoing project I Wish to Say (https://www.sheryloring.org/i-wish-to-say) in 2004 from a concern that many people’s voices were not being heard. She started to take dictation from the public about what they wanted to say to the (next) President. Dressed as a 1960s secretary with a typewriter, she records whatever participants say onto a postcard, making copies with carbon paper. During larger events, a secretarial bank takes dictation. Oring mails the postcards to the White House and exhibits copies. To date she has mailed over 4200 postcards.

For this exhibition, MU’s DiMattio Gallery will chronologically display hundreds of I Wish to Say postcards, photographs, and videos of performances, along with larger prints of select postcard texts. A timeline on the wall will note the presidential elections that span Oring’s project. The empty wall space for 2024 will fill as MU student-typists add postcards they collect during the current election season. The other half of the gallery will showcase a selection of Oring’s related projects that all involve a question, active listening, and a typewriter for a secretary to record dictation. These include Collective Memory (https://www.sheryloring.org/collective-memory) (September 2011), recorded memories of the 9-11 attacks; Travel Desk (https://www.sheryloring.org/travel-desk) (2014), travel stories that were then carved into a wooden table now installed in the San Diego International Airport; and other artworks.

Multi-part programming will include an artist’s talk to showcase Oring’s timely and inclusive artmaking practice. MU students will participate as typists at numerous live events throughout the exhibition’s duration. MU faculty from various disciplines will hold public teach-ins in the gallery about topics related to Oring’s project. Finally, MU is collaborating with nearby Neptune and Long Branch school districts so that high school students can dictate their own postcards to the future president. As an educator, Oring has involved younger constituencies, empowering the next generation of participants in both US democracy and artmaking.

[RE]DEFINING [SPACE]

A PERFORMANCE SERIES CURATED BY ARANTXA ARAUJO & SARA KOSTIC

Today the significance of intimate, public, and digital spaces extends beyond their physical or digital boundaries. The way we construct and utilize these spaces has a profound influence on our mental and physical well-being, our perception of reality, and our perception and experience of ‘freedom’. Araujo and Kostic want to examine the loss of space for sub-cultures under the influence and power of the consumer culture and mass media. When is content a positive addition and when is it a pollution?

“[RE]defining[SPACE]” invites us to critically examine how our perception of reality is shaped by the spaces we inhabit. By challenging the boundaries between intimate, public, and digital spaces, we question the existing power structures that reinforce inequality and exclusion. Through artistic interventions, we seek to disrupt the status quo and envision a future where spaces are designed to promote social cohesion, equity, and well-being.

[RE]defining [SPACE] is an immersive three-day performance series inviting audiences to reflect on the transformative power of space and envision alternative possibilities. Each night of the event serves as a platform for artists to explore the intersection of space, evolving identities, and well-being through various artistic disciplines.

Arantxa Araujo and Sara Kostic’s collaborative work delves into the intricate relationship between humans and resources, shedding light on environmental issues and emphasizing the vital importance of resource preservation for human and ecosystem well-being. Their journey from the confined spaces of a black box to the expansive openness of forests symbolizes their commitment to exploring diverse landscapes and space naratives. Through their artistic endeavors, Araujo and Kostic aim to challenge the ongoing exploitation of the Earth and advocate for a mindful and sustainable connection with our planet. Their collaborations include: “Water Stories” an installation and presentation of performance documentation at BioBAT Art Space, Brooklyn, NY, curated by Elena Soterakis and “Ebb & Flow II” a durational performance & installation in the vast forest of Rosekill, Rosendale, NY, which followed their first exploration of this series “EBB & FLOW” at Triskelion Arts, Brooklyn, NY. Arantxa Araujo and Sara Kostic’s collective work encapsulates a poignant narrative that transcends boundaries, creating a dialogue between art, environment, and humanity. 8. Elina Kulikova, FF Member 23-24, at Essex Flowers Gallery, Aug. 18

Upcoming FUND performance, Elina Kulikova, FF FUND 2023-24 @_elinakulikova

“It Smells Like the End” at Essex Flowers Gallery (@essexflowers)

August 18, 2024

Afternoon: 10-minute performances for individual viewers, 1pm – 4pm (RSVP dm @_elinakulikova)

Evening: Final public performance during Flowers Fest 2024, 5pm – 7pm ($5 ticket link in Bio)

Description :

Elina Kulikova presents two parts of her olfactory participatory performance on the theme of grief and memory. How to construct forgetting in performance and find a language to speak about what is lost forever? “”In performance I explore the possibility of translating our memory into a performative language. How can I talk about war and grief? How can I talk about what paralyses and subjugates our memory? I work at the intersection of autobiography and philosophy, historical documents and artistic exploration. I use the space of theatrical experience as a construction for a conversation about what is impossible to express in ordinary life,”” says Elina Kulikova.

The performance is presented exclusively for the Flower Festival and consists of two parts. The first is a one-on-one meeting with the artist in the gallery space, focused on the viewer’s individual experience and requiring registration before the day of the performance. The second is a final performance in the evening, presented to a wider audience.

Artist bio: (https://www.elinakulikova.com)

Elina Kulikova was born in St Petersburg. She is a theatre director, performance artist, and writer in exile, based in Switzerland. She works mainly with auto-fiction and documentary performance, writing, directing, and performing herself. Elina has participated in international theatre festivals and labs, been nominated for national theatre awards in her home country, and directed more than 15 shows in Russia, the USA, France, Estonia, and Switzerland.

In 2019, she graduated from St Petersburg State University and Bard College (NY, USA) with a major in Arts and a minor in Human Rights. She is now an MA student at La Manufacture Lausanne, specializing in theatre directing, and a current fellow of Georgetown University Fellowship for Global Performance and Politics.

Until 2022, her goal was to develop contemporary and politically charged theatre in her country, challenging the patriarchal and imperialist narrative that threatens freedom and human rights. But in February 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Elina left Russia under propagandist attack to continue her artistic and human rights work abroad. She has already created several anti-war projects and continues working on often harrowing themes of war crimes, state repression, and state gender violence.

Performer bios:

Corazon Tierra is an interdisciplinary dance artist, poet, dance educator, and somatic movement educator. She has spent the past two decades creating experiences that blur the boundaries between art and life, and between personal transformation and community healing. Tierra’s dances follow the organic movements and natural rhythms of the living body, challenging beauty perceptions and revealing the connection of the female body with the natural world. She offers her meditative dances to the community as an invitation to be present in the body, in the here and now, free of shame and judgment. Tierra is the creator of DanzaSpa (somatic dance practice), of DanzaYo Community Dance Practice, and of BelovedBodySoul (positive body esteem through dance and somatics).  corazontierradance.com

Josh Popenoe has been writing and  singing original songs since he was a kid. He grew up in the US, Malaysia and England, and moved to Japan as a young adult for 16 years, before settling in NYC. His songs reflect a lifetime of musical influences, from the humor and lyricism of the Great American Songbook to 60s Pop, classic love songs and crazy jazzy scat.  www.popenoestudio.com

Heather Woodbury is a writer-performer best known for stage serials that combine the immediacy of solo performance with the scope of a novel. Critically praised in the NY Times, Chicago Sun-Times and featured on Ira Glass’s TAL, her works take the pulse of people’s lives in the crosshairs of history. In 2022, her activist travelogue, “Whistle.Stop.Swing.” chronicled a cross-country train-trip, volunteering for key campaigns in five swing states.

heatherwoodbury.substack.com/s/whistlestop-swing

Norman Salant, a Salon regular, is a NYC songwriter/singer and former saxophonist whose songs reflect the most moving elements of life: melodious and intricate, with lyrical wordplay, large themes, poetic imagery, and abstract impressions; above all honest, unpretentious and somehow modern. His saxophone/compositional career was illustrious; his singer/songwriter career has been largely hidden from the wider world. https://www.normansalant.com

Mary Abrams dances, writes, draws, dreams, and runs a business inside-out, outside-in, all around, and through life.  Her 36-year tour living in NYC includes choreography and performance at Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, Dia Center for the Arts, Dixon Place, Ethnic Folk Arts, Movement Research at Judson Church, other venues she can’t remember, streets around Wall Street, the waterfronts, and most currently Salons at MBR.  Starting out with tap, jazz, & ballet in Mason City, IA, Mary holds a BA in Dance from St. Olaf College and for 30 years has been immersing herself in the fluid breath/sound movement inquiry of Continuum and other somatic movement practices.

It premiered last week, as part of Dr Schimmel’s annual AGA Accordion Seminars.  And now, I am pleased to share it with you, through VImeo.  I hope you enjoy it.  And if you like, please check out some of the other videos there.
