Jack Hanley is proud to present I Have Repeated You, a performance by Cortney Andrews.
Cortney Andrews creates cinematic videos, performances, and photographs. Through careful choreography, she portrays scenes that challenge physical and psychological thresholds.
Working with a group of performers, Andrews builds actions into narratives that confront ideas about the social construction of power, desire and gender.
In this recent work, she continues her investigation of relationships through an unusual courtship ritual. On a checkerboard floor, performers approach, engage, reject, and retreat from one another – sometimes imposing intimacy, sometimes withdrawing. Roles are established between partners only to dissolve and be repeated again with a new partner, in a continuous game of shifting positions, affections and desires.
Born and raised in Kansas, Cortney Andrews received her MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2014 and Yaddo in 2013. Andrews has staged performances at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Streb Lab for Action Mechanics and Jack Hanley Gallery. She is the recent recipient of the Franklin Furnace Fund Grant for Performance Art and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant. Her solo exhibition at 106 Green Gallery in Brooklyn, NY was reviewed by Artforum and chosen as a Critics’ Pick.
Andrews is the Co-founder and Director of Offshore Residency, a traveling artists residency program on a sailboat www.offshoreresidency.org. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

“On Whiteness”
Since kicking off in late June, this ambitious citywide venture, organized by the Racial Imaginary Institute, has encompassed a symposium, an artists’ residency, a documentary studio, a film series, a performance program, a reading group, and a cookout. (There’s even a mixtape, available at the gallery 47 Canal.) The vital group show at the heart of it all considers whiteness as a kind of narcissistic disorder-lacking empathy and paranoid about losing power, despite being malignantly powerful-in the works of seventeen artists whose racial diversity is a canny curatorial gambit. Tone varies from comic (Cindy Sherman’s portraits of desperately age-defying women, Seung-Min Lee’s wildly entertaining mockumentary about milk) to soulful (Native Art Department International’s video of a ceremonial dance performed by Dennis Redmoon Darkeem) to chilling (Ken Gonzales-Day’s vintage image of a crowd at a lynching, digitally altered to remove the victim from the scene). Paul Chan’s quivering trio of rising and falling white-robed figures-a figment achieved with fabric and fans-are cautionary mascots of inflated self-worth and defensive fragility.

Why I Love the Building that Is Home to Judson Memorial Church

Judson’s commitment to sex workers rights is unflagging. For decades, to this day, they’ve given space for sex worker rallies, meetings, parties and vigils. This includes giving coffee, cookies and warmth to streetwalkers in the 70’s and 80’s, and where Margo St. James and Gayle Phetersen announced the 2nd World Whores Congress that I attended with Annie Sprinkle in 1986.
Judson is a bastion of avant garde art, and is credited with changing dance in America.
Social Justice matters to Judson. When I support Judson, I am also supporting immigrant’s rights through the New Sanctuary Movement, the New Poor People’s Campaign, and safe needle exchange thru Judson’s harm reduction kit parties.
All are welcome at Judson, always an advocate for the LGBTQXIE rights and supports them as ministers. Judson also invites and supports dialogues and events with other religions and leaves room for non-believers too.
My husband Stuart Cottingham and I had our blessed wedding at Judson. It is there where we also celebrated and mourned the lives of my beloved Stu, Gloria Leonard and Candida Royalle.
Reverend Donna Schaper sort of adopted me, and The Judsonistas supported my book launch.
Attending a service at Judson keeps me informed on many issues, fills me with joy and almost feels like a cabaret.
A thoughtfully spirited community thrives within the walls of Judson Memorial, and it’s great to know that a church has my back

BARNETT AND ANNALEE NEWMAN FOUNDATION GIFTS NEW YORK’S JEWISH MUSEUM $10 MILLION AND 70 ARTWORKS
The Jewish Museum in New York announced today that it has received $10 million from the Barnett and Annalee NewmanFoundation. The funds will endow the museum’s first curatorial position dedicated to contemporary art and will support the care of its collection.
The gift also includes seventy artworks from the Newmans’ personal collection, as well as works created by forty artists who were recipients of the Barnett and Annalee NewmanAward-a prize given annually to artists who exemplify the spirit of Barnett Newman, the New York School painter and theorist who died in 1970. Lynda Benglis, Mark Bradford, Joan Jonas, Jasper Johns, Kerry James Marshall, Julie Mehretu, Camille Pissarro, Mark Rothko, Richard Serra, and Sarah Sze are among the artists whose works will be added to the institution’s collection. A series of exhibitions featuring holdings from the donation will be on view at the Jewish Museum beginning in 2019.
“We are honored that the Jewish Museum was chosen for this extraordinary gift and we believe that this is the right home for the collection, given Barnett Newman’s connection to his heritage, one that valued intellectualism and activism,” said director Claudia Gould. “This gift allows the museum to expand our contemporary art collection in a significant and meaningful way, while celebrating the legacy of such an influential artist.”
