Weekly Spotlight: **FIRST FIFTY VOICES**
For decades, Cynthia Carr (writing as C. Carr) has been a chronicler of downtown New York performance art. Her work has made visible the artists that mainstream culture preferred to ignore, including her writing for The Village Voice through the NEA Four era of the 90s and the culture wars that followed. Here’s how she describes what Franklin Furnace has meant to the arts and culture ecosystem:
“As Martha Wilson always said, FF was on a mission to make the world safe for the avant-garde. It’s a very important space for performance art and artists’ books. Things that get marginalized in the art world were really given importance at Franklin Furnace. A very valuable space.”
For fifty years, Franklin Furnace has championed the artists, ideas, and experiments that wouldn’t have found support anywhere else. Keeping the avant-garde safe and alive requires all of us. Help us fund the next fifty years of fearless art: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/franklin-furnace-archive-inc/first-fifty-campaign

Half Crowns in their Petticoats Reloaded by Elly Clarke
The Exchange Birmingham
Opening Wednesday 15th July, 6-7.45pm
& from then on permanently installed in the building.
Since December 2024, Elly Clarke has been working with Jane McArdle from University of Birmingham on a new (and old! 2012-13) oral history project about the former Birmingham Municipal Bank, in particular its grand, purpose built headquarters on Broad Street.
‘Half Crowns in Their Petticoats Reloaded’ consists of 101 audio tracks recorded in 2012/13 and 2025/6. From Wednesday, all tracks will be available for visitors to the bank – now called The Exchange – to encounter via QR codes in a series of locations around the building, bringing to life the stories of those who worked and banked there, as well as the team responsible for the building’s epic restoration project.
Along with a series of other projects and performances, Unlocking the Vaults launches on Wednesday 15th July and is free & open to all who’d like to join. More info here: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/the-exchange/unlocking-the-vaults
For those not able to attend, here is the link to the work: https://soundcloud.com/halfcrowns/sets.
The name Half Crowns in Their Petticoats is taken from one of the stories, about women entering the bank and unpicking their petticoats to let a cascade of half crowns fall to the floor, with which they would then open an account.
Thanks to Jane McArdle for the invitation to do this work. And to curator Charlie Levine for commissioning the first version, back in the days when the bank was leaky and dark, echoey and extremely cold, for what was a brilliant four day group show called Thrift Radiates Happiness.

6. Frank Moore, FF Alumn, at the Internet Archive
The Internet Archive has accepted our donation offer of all of the physical materials from LUVeR, Love Underground Visionary Revolution, the audio/video streaming station Frank started in February 1999 that ran until April 27, 2012. LUVeR featured shows by live streaming DJs from all over the world, taped shows created by the DJs for their time slots, and streaming video shows. Frank also did a live video 2.5 hour show, the Shaman’s Den, almost every Sunday night that featured live bands, politicians, activists, poets, authors, artists and anyone Frank found interesting and wanted to have a conversation with. This collection of audio and video material is the archive of these shows that were created for LUVeR. There are about 25 medium sized moving boxes of materials in this collection.
Here is how Frank Moore described LUVeR on the home page of the website:
“I’m Frank Moore. I am to blame for starting LUVeR in 1999. LUVeR has bloomed over the years. LUVeR is a totally new communication media which combines live streaming, on-demand libraries of programming, audio, and video. LUVeR is an anti-corporate, anti-capitalist revolution! LUVeR is and will remain a non-corporate, d.i.y., totally uncensored, noncommercial, nonprofit internet-only communal collective with 24-hour “live” programming (by amazing people) with “no-limits” content. LUVeR is the African drums beating warnings! It is the visions of change, the rich and diverse voices of the people! LUVeR is a listeners-viewers/artists-supported channel. LUVeR is a tribal channel! Nobody will try to sell you anything here.
LUVeR is based on shows created/webcasted by individuals around the world, created from their personal passions. These individuals have total control over their shows, insuring the channel’s freedom and independence. This also insures that the channel is accessible to voices, music, creativity, news, visions, histories, etc. which have been frozen out of the commercial media.
Yep, LUVeR is very dangerous to the powers that suppress people! We are taking OUR cultures, OUR music, OUR web, OUR freedoms back … back into our communal human family. We simply reject the fragmentation, isolation, ownership, and the worship of profit. We people together are dangerous … love, passion, and simple unlimited fun are dangerous. So THEY will come after LUVeR, will try to shut us down, gag us. And THEY might succeed … for a while! But until THEY do come after us, we will be here, spinning dreams! And we will just go deeper underground when THEY come for us. Hey! We are LOVE UNDERGROUND VISIONARY REVOLUTION!”

HERE’S THE DESCRIPTION OF MY WORKSHOP ON THURSDAY MORNING JULY 16TH…
Living a creative and productive life centered around a sketch book, digital device, desk, or small-scale work area can be liberating for your mind, but hard on your body. Hours of daily drawing can lead to repetitive stress injuries, eye strain, stress, and all sorts of pain. This workshop explores the relationships between your creative environment, tools, hand/wrist alignment, and posture, when working with traditional media or digital equipment. Learn some ergonomics hacks and how to prevent eye strain. Explore ways to make drawing and writing postures easier on your body. Practice some self-care techniques that will loosen tight muscles and reduce stress.
Where and when will the workshop be?
At the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Main Building 1300 Mount Royal Avenue Baltimore, MD RM M140
From 8am-11am
I’M GIVING A MAINSTAGE PRESENTATION ABOUT MY GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND OTHER ARTWORK ON SATURDAY MORNING ON JULY 18TH…
Integrative Arts Benefits Via My “Day Job”
Having lived duo careers as a performance and a visual artist, my work in healthcare and education now very successfully facilitates my graphic medicine and integrative arts careers. This presentation shares my images, describes successful artworks based on my emotional, social, humorous, and professional experiences, and explores the integration of potential viewers’ interests. Also, as a current educator I successfully teaches art to scientists and science to artists. Hooray!
I’ll start and go from 9:00 – 9:20 AM
Where is it? at THE BROWN CENTER / FALVEY HALL, 1301 W. Mt Royal Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21217
Also, I will have a couple bits of my artwork in their gallery. Yay!
Hope to see you there!!!

The idea of bloodlines is both restrictive and expansive. Used in its narrowest sense, it becomes a way of determining who belongs and who does not, a tool of hierarchy and authoritarian control. Yet when we expand our understanding of bloodlines to include the lineages we create, they become a source of connection rather than constraint.
Bloodlines is about the unexpected bonds that alter one another’s lives and work: chance encounters, enduring friendships, chosen families, mentorships, and generational ties that invariably shape both how we live and how we make art.
Spanning generations and mediums, the exhibition explores what draws us together in a culture increasingly defined by division. It asks what we inherit from one another, not only through family, friendship, collaboration, mentorship, and artistic exchange, but through the countless relationships that shape how we live and make work.
In a culture increasingly organized around separation and categories of belonging, these chosen lineages become one of our most powerful acts of resistance.
Thank you so much,
Grace

11. Devora Neumark, FF Alumn, at 13th International Forest Art Path, Darmstadt, Germany, opening Aug. 22, and more
I am thrilled to announce that my project Letters to the Forest will be part of the 13th International Forest Art Path “Democratic Forest” in Darmstadt, Germany, opening August 22, 2026.
I am now inviting people from around the world to contribute an audio recording of a letter to a tree or to the forest. Your letter can take any form: an apology, a love letter, a beseechment, a prayer, a lament, a declaration, or anything else that feels right. It can be in any language.
Letters to the Forest grows out of my ongoing series Letters to the Water (2015) and Letters to the Ice (2021), and continues my practice of inviting people to speak directly to the natural elements at the heart of our climate crisis. Trees are so central to what we stand to lose and to what might yet be saved.
To participate, please record your letter as an MP3 file of no longer than one minute and send it to devoraneumark@gmail.com by July 20, 2026.
I would be grateful if you would share this invitation widely.
All best,
Devora
