L. Brandon Krall, FF Alumn, In Memoriam
The artist and filmmaker, L. Brandon Krall, aka LBVK, as well as Brandola, Brandonia, Brandolette, Brandolissima, has passed away today, Monday, June 28, 2021, at 8:20am. She had been ill with cancer. Her life ended peacefully while she was asleep. A Celebration Event will be organized by her friends. Love to all of you!

Dan Kwong (writer/director/editor) just completed a two-year project for 18th Street Arts Center, a collaborative video with artist Paulina Sahagun about the unique multicultural history of his local community in Santa Monica.
Once known as La Veinte (“the 20”), the neighborhood based around 20th Street and Olympic Blvd. in Santa Monica, California was a working class community established in the early 20th century. Through longstanding racial discriminatory housing practices, it came to be home to most of Santa Monica’s service workers and people of color. It was also a striking example of multiple communities of color living together in harmony and a spirit of cooperation. One immigrant family in particular, the Casillases, played a key role in supporting and nurturing this spirit. From their arrival in Santa Monica over 100 years ago, the Casillas family went on to become the largest single family ever to immigrate to Santa Monica from Mexico. Their story and the story of La Veinte reminds us what is possible for our communities.

Prayer Ribbons – from Provincetown to Orlando

Every year at the annual Provincetown Swim for Life, participants and supporters write messages of love on colorful ribbons. When the Pulse nightclub shooting happened on June 16, 2016, in Orlando, Florida, Swim founder Jay Critchley invited the Provincetown community to Town Hall to add black ribbons in dedication to the victims. The Swim ribbons were then invited to bring Provincetown’s messages of hope and solidarity to the victims’ families and the community of Orlando.
A conversation with Lise King, Filmmaker; Jay Critchley, Founder of Provincetown Community Compact; Luis M. Martinez, Deputy Manager of Multicultural Affairs & International Relations, Orlando; and Frank Billingsley, Chief of Staff to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer; moderated by Christine K. Join us for the opening celebration of our new exhibition, “Life in Lists and Notes” on Saturday July 17th, from 1-6pm.
With this exhibition, we celebrate the poetic, mnemonic, narrative and enumerative qualities of lists and notes, and explore their myriad creative, professional, bureaucratic, institutional, domestic, and personal uses throughout the ages. At the opening day celebration there will be live music and performances from itinerant musicians Adam Cook and Tomas Majcherski, local farmer-performers Maria Schumann and Ira Karp, dancer/vaudevillian Maura Gahan, Meredith Holch, and so much more, including a special premier performance of a new piece for lawn-mower and vocalists by composer Glenn Weyant. Performances will start around 2:00pm. Manifestos, snacks and beverages will be served. Admission by donation. The exhibition will be on view until May 2022 and includes surprise input from Jennifer Miller, FF Alumn, and selections from the collections of FF Alumns Paul Zaloom and Harley Spiller aka Inspector Collector. If you are not vaccinated against Covid-19, we ask that you please wear a mask while in the museum and distance from other unvaccinated individuals.

13. Doug Skinner, FF Alumn, new publication
I was delighted to work with historian Caroline Crépiat to translate her
book “Le Chat Noir Exposed,” now out from Black Scat Books. Caroline
specializes in that iconic bohemian cabaret, and discusses its
remarkable poets and performers and their treatment of such subjects as
money, women, translation, and scatology.
Scat Noir, by the way, is now nine years old. Its founder, the
inimitable Derek Pell, celebrates with a new color hardback edition of
“Masks,” his illustrated adaptation of Alphonse Allais. I contribute an
introduction and silly footnotes.
In the coming months, look for my book on paranormal music, “Music from
Elsewhere” (Strange Attractor Press) and my translation of Charles
Cros’s bizarre “Principles of Cerebral Mechanics” (Wakefield Press).
Also in the works are an album of songs and a book of short stories.

Regina Vater (Rio de Janeiro, 1947) is one of the pioneers in the use of video as a device for visual experimentation in Brazilian art. After studying expressionist and pop-influenced painting in the 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, she was invited by chance to film a play by Ruth Escobar’s group while she was living in Paris in 1974. Since then, video has marked a large part of Regina’s production, whether through recordings of happenings and performances, video and photomontages or audiovisual installations.

Hector Canonge, FF Alumn, presents from Colombia his live performance “NO QUIERO LO QUE NO TENGO” (I Don’t Want What I Don’t Have) in the inaugural event of the international performance art festival Acciones Al Margen, and in Bolivia he performs “ONDAS DE OCRE” (Ochre Waves) as part of his solo exhibition “MI HOGAR ESTÁ DONDE VOS ESTÉS” (My Home is Where You Might Be) at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (On view through July 15th). Canonge’s work “LIMINAL FATIGUE” is included in a review of Argentine Performance Art in the online publication “El Devenir de la Performance argentina en épocas de pandemia” written by Camila Stehling.

Canonge’s new work explores the material nature of Performance Art through the manipulations of everyday objects. The performance pays particular to the use of materials giving them a different meaning and transforming them into evocative elements of human sensations. The work also explores the liminal threshold between the physical space and its virtual framing through the screen.

MI HOGAR ESTÁ DONDE VOS ESTÉS (My Home is Where You Might Be)
MAC, Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.
Hector Canonge’s commissioned solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art is a multidisciplinary approach to the exploration of memory, identity and history. Departing from the use of old colonial roof tiles from one of the historic mansions located in the city center of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, Canonge constructs a visual narrative incorporating more than 100 tiles in a pseudo-archeological process that narrates his own story and the origins of the construction material. The roof tiles found by Canonge are assigned a new meaning and context by being displayed in the museum gallery not as construction material, but as art objects with aesthetics and form. The exhibition also includes close photographs of 30 tiles which resemble satellite images of territories intervened with a blue digital thin line. In addition, the exhibit includes an entire wall with graphics done with pastel color, a video that displays generative text written by the artist, and a new tile obtained from a local artisan displayed for visitors in a museum glass case. As part of the exhibition, Canonge will conduct a series of seminars focused on Conceptual Art, and will deliver two new performance art works.
