The Landfill Project: Visioning Workshop

Join us on July 15 at 12 pm for a workshop with residents, students,
experts, officials and artists to dream the future of the Edgemere
Landfill. The Landfill Project exhibition at the RISE Cente will help
inform the conversation and the ideas for this unique site.
The Edgemere Landfill, a former municipal dump in the Rockaways,
Queens, has been closed for over 20 years. The landfill operated as a
disposal site from 1938 to 1991, receiving about 1200 tons of waste per
day. Today, Edgemere Landfill is capped and is at the end of a
remediation process that has converted it into a spectacular, and yet
unused site offering views of Jamaica Bay and the distant Manhattan
skyline. The land is facing an as-yet-undeter¬mined future. The
Landfill Project is an exhibit at the Rockaway Institute for a
Sustainable Environment, that explores the site and strategies to
create and use it for positive impact for Edgemere. Defining the
constraints, opportunities and expressions of the site’s unique
features helps to imagine what this land could become in the future.

Alexander Gray Associates is pleased to announce Michael Jackson: On the Wall, including work by Lorraine O’Grady, at the National Portrait Gallery, London. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Nicholas Cullinan.
This landmark exhibition explores the influence of Michael Jackson on some of the leading names in contemporary art, spanning several generations of artists across all media. The exhibition will coincide with what would have been Michael Jackson’s 60th birthday (on August 29, 2018).
Jackson is one of the most influential cultural figures to come out of the 20th century and his legacy continues into the 21st century. His significance is widely acknowledged when it comes to music, music videos, dance, choreography and fashion, but his considerable influence on contemporary art is an untold story. Since Andy Warhol first used his image in 1982, Jackson has become the most depicted cultural figure in visual art by an extraordinary array of leading contemporary artists. For the first time, Michael Jackson: On the Wall will bring together the works of over forty of these artists, drawn from public and private collections around the world, including new works made especially for the exhibition.
To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery and curator of Michael Jackson: On the Wall, introduces the exhibition and talks to participating artists Todd Gray, Lorraine O’Grady and Isaac Julien.

This concert version of John Kelly’s acclaimed tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell, performed without theatrical costumes, is focused on songs from the various stages of Ms. Mitchell’s career, sung in Kelly’s signature three-octave voice, and played utilizing her unique guitar tunings and on the dulcimer that she gave him upon first seeing his performance. Eunice Golden exhibits 8 works of paintings and mixed media artworks along with her seminal film “Blue Bananas and Other Meats” 1973 in the Group show “In The Cut: The Male Body in Feminist Art” at Stadtgalerie Saarbrucken, Germany May 18 to Sept. 30, 2018.
Artists like Louise Bourgeois (US), Eunice Golden (US), Herlinde Koelbl (DE), Carolee Schneemann (US), Joan Semmel (US), and Betty Tompkins (US) pushed the development of these feminist approaches from the 1960s onwards. Sexuality has played a decisive role in the history of art ab initio. Until the 1970s, however, it was the male gaze at the female body which informed the politics of these images. In the first feminist examinations of the erotic which followed, woman artists also focused their explorations on their own body. The (hetero)erotic female gaze, on the other hand – directed at the male body – continues to be an exception in art. When feminist artists take a desirous look at the male body they break more than one taboo and reverse the power relations inherent to the traditional canon of images. With their own depictions of the erotic male body they raise a claim to sexual self-determination and artistic authority. At the same time they question determined role models and open up the discourse for new options of sexual identities.The distinctiveness of this exhibition’s approach, however, lies also in its creating a platform for woman artists to explore a subject which remains taboo for women; that is to say, it gives private female sexuality – a subject with has been either excluded or ignored by social, artistic, and even feminist discussions – a stage for artistic expression. Although curiosity for the female body’s sensuality and the desire which it inspires have long been a source of creative impetus and a central theme of the artistic production for many male artists, the sensual gaze upon the male body remains an exception in the work of woman artists.

Alternately funny and disturbing, Finley explores the Shakespearean dynamics that arise when libidos and loyalties clash in the public and private personas of Donald Trump, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, Harvey Weinstein, and others. The aggression of intimacy, the disparity of gender, and the vital importance of hair are all expressed with Finley’s raucous candor. The evening will also include new work not included in the book that responds to the separation of families at the border, the suicides of Bourdain and Spade, and the #MeToo movement. Standing in the tradition of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, GRABBING PUSSY speaks to a world increasingly divided into predators and victims.

Since her first performances in the early 1980’s, KAREN FINLEY has become synonymous with performance art. A performer, artist, writer, musician, poet, teacher and lecturer, she is the recipient of two Obies, two Bessies, and multiple grants from the NEA and NYSCA. She has toured internationally with pieces including Make Love, George & Martha, The Jackie Look, The American Chestnut, A Certain Level of Denial and The Return of The Chocolate Smeared Woman, and Written in the Sand. In 1990, Finley became an unwilling symbol for the NEA when she, along with Tim Miller, Holly Hughes & John Fleck, sued the NEA for withdrawing grants on the grounds of indecency; the controversial case went all the way to the Supreme Court. Among Finley’s books are Shock Treatment, Enough Is Enough: Weekly Meditations for Living Dysfunctionally, the Martha Stewart satire Living It Up: Humorous Adventures in Hyperdomesticity, Pooh Unplugged, and A Different Kind of Intimacy. Her art is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among other places. Finley is a professor in the department of Art and Public Policy at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.

Issa Samb(a), aka Jo(e) Ouakam was a Senegalese painter, sculptor, performance artist, actor, poet, art critic. He also used the name Ramangelissa as a playwright. Some call him the Shaman of African Art. Samb was a founding member of the seminal Laboratoire Agit-Art, an art collective founded in 1973 with goal of revitalizing artistic production, and critique institutional frameworks and the philosophy of Negritude in particular. His work combines influences from African traditions as well as 20th-century avant-garde movements including Dada, Surrealism, Situationism, and Fluxus. Samb’s work was exhibited at the Whitechapel gallery in London in 1995, and at the 2012 Documenta in Kassel, Germany. During the 2016 Dakar Biennale, he convened the “Midnight Congress”, a major multimedia exhibit that would be his last show before his death on April 24, 2017.
The film is primarily situated in Samb’s compound where he lived and worked, turning the outdoor courtyard into a constantly evolving, living installation. Samb’s artistic laboratory was under threat from developers in the last year of his life, and, despite community efforts to safeguard it for posterity, it was torn down shortly after his death. This film gives a rare glimpse into Samb’s life and the community he created around this now-lost space.

This work is comprised of displaced familiar imagery, producing texture within rhythms of image-processing, how they sway, mirror and bond within the shadow of psyche.

Zinester & visual artist Billy Starfield (better known as Starchild Stela) currently runs a DIY, self-published advice column called Billy’s Courrier du Coeur.
Courrier du Coeur is created and promoted entirely offline, through flyers at specific locations. Topics in its advice column vary greatly: from romantic endeavours to astrological compatibility, queer dramas to outfit advice, surviving sexual violence to striving on your own. The courrier, always building from an anti-oppressive framework, can take a silly, spontaneous turn to a more political and serious take according to the letter.
In partnership with musician Lyndsie Alguire, the artists will provide a romantic ambiance through music, performance and installation work. Transforming the garden into a love nest filled with an idyllic weather-proof decor, coming alive with an evening of sounds and performances, composed of objects that have had a past life: objects found on the curb, in second hand stores or through friends.

“[Billy] Starfield is a well-known Montreal graffiti artist, visual artist, and zinester. They elevate femme identity and so-called “feminine” aesthetics in a masc-obsessed queer culture. Lyndsie Alguire is a Montreal-based audio-visual artist creating textural and melodic music that draws equally from neo-classical,electroacoustic, and pop forms. Her productions and performances are built on a foundation of improvisation and reflection. Through both sound and photography, she experiments with concepts surrounding vulnerability. Playing with abstractions and personas allows her to explore the ways in which she inhabits her body, and the ways her body inhabits spaces.

Why I Love the Building that Is Home
to Judson Memorial Church

Judson’s commitment to sex workers rights is unflagging. For decades, to this day, they’ve given space for sex worker rallies, meetings, parties and vigils. This includes giving coffee, cookies and warmth to streetwalkers in the 70’s and 80’s, and where Margo St. James and Gayle Phetersen announced the 2nd World Whores Congress that I attended with Annie Sprinkle in 1986.
Judson is a bastion of avant garde art, and is credited with changing dance in America.
Social Justice matters to Judson. When I support Judson, I am also supporting immigrant’s rights through the New Sanctuary Movement, the New Poor People’s Campaign, and safe needle exchange thru Judson’s harm reduction kit parties.
All are welcome at Judson, always an advocate for the LGBTQXIE rights and supports them as ministers. Judson also invites and supports dialogues and events with other religions and leaves room for non-believers too.
My husband Stuart Cottingham and I had our blessed wedding at Judson. It is there where we also celebrated and mourned the lives of my beloved Stu, Gloria Leonard and Candida Royalle.
Reverend Donna Schaper sort of adopted me, and The Judsonistas supported my book launch.
Attending a service at Judson keeps me informed on many issues, fills me with joy and almost feels like a cabaret.
A thoughtfully spirited community thrives within the walls of Judson Memorial, and it’s great to know that a church has my back.
