This Weekly Spotlight highlights the 30-minute documentary video of artist Paul Granjon in his performance Z Food in New York, presented on April 16th, 1999 by Franklin Furnace and the Pseudo Online Network. Granjon’s Z food series is an exploration of local foods and electronics from around the world, applying the same procedure in each nation the artist visits. After speaking about his previous endeavors, Granjon narrates and films his journey in New York City, presenting his response to having enjoyed dim sum and chicken feet for the first time, as well as the first ever bagel-bot, a mechanical toy robot he bought on Canal Street and rebuilt to deliver bagels. Granjon’s lighthearted and idiosyncratic performance melds storytelling, song, technology and avant-garde art at the intersection between art, performance, food and travel. Victory to the Mother! is a participatory Hip Hop Yoga Puja honoring five living Goddesses (Female MCs, Brujas & Wise Wombyn) who deliver their origin story and fed by hours of mantra, fly into spiritual ecstasy. Inspired by jagratas of folk India, our Hip Hop Yoga puja harnesses ritually induced passion to cement healthy social bonds. Invoking the Goddess in the form of a flame (jyoti) kept burning throughout the night, keeping the flame burning suggests the root metaphor of being “woke” spiritually. Our puja is the culminating public event of aweek-long Hip Hop Yoga retreat upstate at Rosekill. The poem is from a collection of works called “The Mayor of the Lower East Side Speaks”, which High Times Magazine reviewed saying, “Galinsky is manic, takes rapid-fire shots at drunk drivers, firearms, and bicycle messengers with almost psychotic precision.”

Alexander Gray Associates presents Subliminal Horizons, an exhibition curated by Alvin Hall as an open-ended survey of Black, indigenous, brown, and Asian artists living and working in the Hudson Valley in New York.
BIPOC creators and their predecessors have always been present in the Hudson Valley. They numbered among its original inhabitants and labored in its agrarian and industrial economies. They have been a force in the countercultural and creative communities that have historically been drawn to the area and are now driving its ongoing transformation into an arts-driven economy. Nonetheless, their work has largely been left out of a cultural narrative that historically gives primacy to the nearly all-white, all-male Hudson River School. Bringing together painting, sculptures, and drawings by an intergenerational group of BIPOC artists living and working in Hudson Valley, Subliminal Horizons invites a fluid, open-ended consideration of the area’s cultural life oriented towards an expanded field and a more complete context.
Rather than presenting a purely critical thesis, the exhibition offers a point of departure for this expanded field. The artists and the works on view are connected by loosely recurring art historical themes such as the contrast between the sublime, realist landscapes of the Hudson River School and the figuration, interiority, textuality, or abstraction of much contemporary work; and by the possibilities for community and collectivity embedded in their shared geography. “I’ve looked at the Hudson River and the surrounding landscape so many times during train rides. The metaphor of the estuary—a body of water that flows in multiple directions—resonates in the works,” says Alvin Hall. “One can locate the covering and uncovering of personal and social histories; a blurring of distinction between the representational and the abstract; the conflicts of the documented and imaginary; and a tension among traditions, modernism, and contemporary art’s growing pluralism in the diverse works in the exhibition.”
A necessarily incomplete intervention, Subliminal Horizons is an exercise in building community, shifting narratives, and reframing dialogue. Generous rather than exclusive, responsive rather than prescriptive, the exhibition aims to strengthen and extend community ties by uncovering existing histories, affinities, and artistic connections. Collectively, the artists and their works speak to the many ways the Hudson Valley is today an important magnet for artistic expression, intellectual pursuit, and emotional expansion.

For The Breaths it Takes Me to Get to You (Slowly), I invite neighbors to gather at Kelly Street Garden, as I arrive walking from Beck Street, while breathing in and out consciously, for a group session that includes practices such as gentle movement and mindful walking, as well as incorporating some specific breathing exercises from the Breath-Body-Mind™ (BBM) program developed by Dr. Patricia Gerbarg and Dr. Richard P. Brown. All of this is to happen outside in the garden, and in the company of plants, flowers and trees. Bring with you a shawl or thin cover (this item is optional).
The practices I will introduce you to can assist with connecting with the Earth, enhancing sleep, kindling calm from within, helping with focus and concentration, and gifting you with readily available tools that you can easily draw on during your day.
With Ven-ve, I am interested in walking as art, but also for healing, and to kindle community and links amongst communities, peoples, organizations and towns as I have done for 20 years. Ven-ve brings awareness to the cycles of life in urban gardens, from germination and silent growth to more growth and harvest; all of this calling us to thanksgiving (as in giving thanks as an ongoing-daily practice).
Ven-ve is presented with funds as part of a regrant program awarded Kelly Street Garden by Kalliopeia Foundation, as an important part of making Kelly Street Garden a spiritual hub and cultural treasure within the Longwood/ South Bronx community.

“MI HOGAR ESTÁ DONDE VOS ESTÉS” (My Home is Where You Might Be)

Hector Canonge’s commissioned solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art is a multidisciplinary approach to the exploration of memory, identity and history. Departing from the use of old colonial roof tiles from one of the historic mansions located in the city center of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, Canonge constructs a visual narrative incorporating more than 100 tiles in a pseudo-archeological process that narrates his own story and the origins of the construction material. The roof tiles found by Canonge are assigned a new meaning and context by being displayed in the museum gallery not as construction material, but as art objects with aesthetics and form. The exhibition also includes close photographs of 30 tiles which resemble satellite images of territories intervened with a blue digital thin line. In addition, the exhibit includes an entire wall with graphics done with pastel color, a video that displays generative text written by the artist, and a new tile obtained from a local artisan displayed for visitors in a museum glass case. As part of the exhibition, Canonge will conduct a series of seminars focused on Conceptual Art, and will deliver two new performance art works.

AUSTRAL Performance Art Festival Buenos Aires

The second edition of AUSTRAL, will take place this coming week under the name of “AUSTRAL desde lo VIRTUAL” (Austral from the virtual realm) to take place online from June 23 to the 27, 2021.
Like many other festivals around the globe, AUSTRAL didn’t take place in 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic. However the use of new technologies and present day capabilities of video streaming as well as easy Internet access in most regions around the world, have made possible the creation of an online program to continue with the exploration and experimentation of Performance Art by local, national and international practitioners. For this year, the festival has an open theme and will feature artists selected from an international open call and through direct invitations from presenting partners. AUSTRAL is organized under the curatorial direction of Hector Canonge in collaboration with ARTerial Performance Lab (APLAB), the transcontinental network of artists of the Americas, and presented in collaboration with the hosting institutions of Buenos Aires: Centro Cultural Paco Urondo, Umbral Espacio de Arte, and Zona Imaginaria. AUSTRAL 2021 will present new works by local, national, and international artists, an online workshop, conference and video screenings.

Jody Oberfelder Projects and company invites you to an exciting and fun evening of our live, site-specific performance Amphitheater on June 21st at 6:30PM. A joyous world premiere of live dance of four dancers of JOP and music by Grammy award winning trumpeter Frank London, Amphitheater challenges the pending demolition of this 50-acre park that transformed Lower Manhattan more than 80 years ago through inscribing the space with our movement inspired from human connections. Additionally, the program with open with a poem by Eileen Myles and a land acknowledgement by Emily Johnson.

HATS ON! will be screened at The First London International Smartphone Film Festival, June 21-25. For the film, participants were asked to cross the road where they live (wearing unusual hats, masks and winter coats) and send me the videos. These have all been edited into a base video, filmed with my phone at the intended location for a live event: in front of Warren Street Station, London. Videos came from London, Peterborough, Hastings and Norfolk; SWEDEN – Stockholm, Norrahammar and Värnamo; USA – Wisconsin, New York, Iowa, and Colorado; FRANCE, SCOTLAND and TAIWAN. The average distance between participants was 507 miles.

Super excited to be opening Storying, the culminating exhibition of Residency Unlimited’s 2021 NYC-Based Artist Residency Program featuring works by Damali Abrams the Glitter Priestess, Elvira Clayton, Zachary Fabri and Helina Metaferia. Through oral histories, the epistolary form, ritual vessels and a performative time capsule of our current moment, the works in Storying recall lesser-known events and accounts that have yet to be written through processes that yield emotional and political solidarity while honoring the past.
