11. Ruth Wallen, FF Alumn, at Bewaerschole, Burgh-Haamstede, Netherlands, opening June 17
I am having a solo exhibition “Learning to Think Like a Forest,” at “Bewaerschole,” Burgh-Haamstede, Netherlands. It opens on June 17 from 2-5 PM (14:00-17:00) and runs until July 16.
In Learning to Think Like a Forest, American artist Ruth Wallen examines the trading of trees between the Netherlands and the United States. The exhibition focuses on two story lines. The first centers around the black cherry tree, native to the US, but currently seen as a “forest plague” in the Netherlands. This prompts an investigation into the history of exotic trees brought to either country, often widely planted and then scorned as “invasive” species when they overstep their welcome. The second thread focuses on the iconic sequoia, one of the longest-living trees, which has been planted around the world, including in Burgh-Haamstede. The artist invites viewers to accompany her on walks with the sequoia in their native land after many were killed in recent catastrophic fires. The exhibition offers a place to contemplate the stories we are telling about the natural world. Instead of grabbing for singular jewels, how can we commit to reweaving a multifaceted, resilient life web? Participants are invited to contribute their stories of actions that will lead to future ecological well-being.

14. Doug Skinner, FF Alumn, new publications
I’m delighted to announce that “The Man Who Ate His House” is now available from Black Scat Books! For this curious little volume, Derek Pell and I selected plots from the cautionary writer’s manual “101 Plots Used and Abused” (James N. Young, 1945), modified and combined them in various ways, and fed them to ChatGPT. The sixteen stories that resulted are funny, surprising, and not quite human. A.I. might never replace human literature, but we’re proud of our robot pal’s efforts.
The second issue of “Typo” is also out. I contributed brief articles on alien alphabets and double talk, translations of Guillaume Apollinaire, Pierre Albert-Birot, and Gaston de Pawlowski, and a musical transcription of the traditional dummy text “Lorem ipsum dolor.”
I also contributed seven verse fables to “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral,” an anthology edited by the remarkable Welsh writer Rhys Hughes for Gibbon Moon Books.
All of these treats are available on Amazon. Happy June! Doug Skinner.
Thank you.

Please join us next week at 601Artspace for a special event featuring artists Joseph Liatela and Zachary Fabri in conversation with Sara Reisman, the curator of our current exhibition, Two Grains of Wheat:
On Presence
Saturday, June 17th at 5pm
601Artspace, 88 Eldridge Street
On Presence is a conversation between Zachary Fabri and Joseph Liatela, whose performance-based projects are featured in Two Grains of Wheat. Each artist engages movement as a form of social repair, and each works with shared spaces as sites where collective memory, absence, grief, and movement inform how we understand ourselves and one another. In To Move is to Remember (2022), Liatela’s devotional objects and prints allude to the spiritual aspects of club culture. Fabri’s performance in Mourning Stutter (2017/2022) is a revelatory expression of Blackness within the built environment. In a discussion with curator Sara Reisman, Liatela and Fabri will address the motivations for creating their respective projects, both of which demonstrate the importance of holding space for both grief and joy in times of loss and upheaval.

“Emergence: Eco-Art Actions on the Climate Crisis”
Sweeping heat waves, melting glaciers, and rising oceans. All indicate climate change has become a reality and it is posing serious threats to both human and planetary survival. In the midst of the ecological ruin of the planet, ecological art and other forms of creative actions (such as permaculture, ecovillages, and transition towns) are jointly seeking to heal the planet from the wounds wretched by relentlessly industrial growth, rethinking human’s ecological niche in a larger system of life with rapidly diminishing finite resources.
Unleashing unexpected creativity, these restorative actions could be understood as the expression of emergent property, the unexpected, orderly patterns created from disorderly elements, according to system and biological science. The concept of emergent property, intrinsic in all living systems and an embodiment of the intelligence of nature, brings new insights into approaching the climate crisis, and into creating a sustainable future nourished by ecological and cultural diversity.
The artists in the exhibition offer examples of emergence. Their transdisciplinary practices integrate art, science, pedagogy, activism, audience engagement and participation. Their creative actions intend to open up new ways of thinking, living, and being with human and nonhuman others in a complex and interconnected world. Their visions will create new hopes for cultivating our ecological consciousness and shaping a livable and sustainable future.
Thank you.

20. Roberley Bell, FF Alumn, at Brattleboro Museum of Art, VT, opening June 24
Roberley Bell, Where Things Set, June 24-Oct. 9, 2023, opening June 24, saturday, 5 pm; artists and curator conversation, July 20, thursday, 7 pm
https://www.brattleboromuseum.org/
In Where Things Set, Roberley Bell’s sculptures and drawings share space, allowing us to see the conversations that take place between these different bodies of work, and how integral drawing is to Bell’s practice. Bell describes drawing as ‘a way of thinking out loud.’
On paper, she works out ideas of form, color, and placement, working intuitively and searching for what feels right. The drawings feel spontaneous, and at times edgy or awkward as Bell feels her way through the gestures and shapes she puts on the page.
One thing leads to another: Bell’s drawings help her find her way to the three-dimensional forms she wishes to create. Bell creates organic forms that feel familiar, yet still resist identification. The sculptural works are amalgams– hybrid forms made from fabricated elements and found materials, with splashes of vivid, saturated color that further enhance their idiosyncrasy.
Where Things Set gives us an intimate glimpse into Bell’s creative process, from initial exploratory mark-making on paper to the realized three-dimensional forms with their varied materials, textures, and personalities. It’s an invitation to look, and to think about our own ways of making sense and finding form.

21. Tutu Gallery, FF Member, at Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn, opening June 16
Name: Tutu Gallery
Artist: Yulin Gu, Sha Luo
Curator: Yindi Chen
Exhibition: Seal the Fog
Opening reception: 6/16/2023, 6-9PM
Opening date: 6/16/2023
Closing date: 8/1/2023
Address: Willoughby Ave x Stuyvesant Ave, DM @gallerytutu or email tutugallery.meow@gmail.com for exact address

Description:
Tutu Gallery presents a two-person exhibition of Yulin Gu and Sha Luo, Seal the Fog, opening June 16 through August 1, 2023. Incorporating photographic objects, sculptures, and site-specific installations, Yulin and Sha revise and reinterpret daily terrains and household items they encounter, gently playing with the reliability of memories and the originality of creative acts. Mass-produced materials such as plastic, fabric, and glass become agencies for translating marginalized experiences and personal narratives into tactile forms. With works detached from the walls, suspended from the ceilings, and standing in the backyard, the exhibition attempts to turn Tutu’s home space into an imaginary field where displaced nostalgia resides.

23. Theodora Skipitares, FF Alumn, now online at NYTimes.com
Through June 18. 15 Orient, 12 Jefferson Street, Brooklyn
Puppets are not a premier medium in the art world, but the rise of performance art and exhibitions like Theodora Skipitares’s “View From the Miniature City” — as well as their inclusion in recent art histories — might change that. Skipitares’s show, drawn largely from her 1981 performance with puppets, “Micropolis: 6 Portraits and a Landscape,” argues for the power of the form.
The exhibition itself is a marvel. Installed in the landlord’s living quarters above the gallery, in dim rooms lined with vintage wallpaper, the show features mini-theaters holding Skipitares’s tableaus populated by puppets the size of dolls. Dark, raunchy and ironic narratives, told in audio recordings, are accompanied at times by “brainy but bloodthirsty” (as one music writer described it) compositions by Virgil Moorefield. “Micropolis: Sylvia” (1981) stars a classic unreliable narrator: a “gifted” lady-puppet who meets with a surprising denouement. The dinosaur in “Micropolis: On the Road” (1981) nods simultaneously to the freedom envisioned by Jack Kerouac in his peripatetic 1957 novel “On the Road” and the impending “extinction” of bohemians in downtown New York.
The whole show is a reminder of the extraordinary density of talent — real, not merely mythical — in downtown New York in the ’70s and ’80s, which produced novel interdisciplinary forms. Much has changed, but the art dinosaurs of yore didn’t go extinct; many are hiding in plain sight. How did a young gallerist discover this work? Easy: Skipitares, who is well known in the avant puppet-theater world, was his professor at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

24. Yvonne Rainer, FF Alumn, at Judson Memorial Church, Manhattan, June 20
Meet a legend! Join Yvonne Rainer for the book launch and signing of Remembering a Dance: Parts of Some Sextets, 1965/2019
6–8pm, on June 20, 2023
Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012
With a special performance of Trio A by Brittany Bailey
Performa is proud to announce the official launch of Remembering a Dance: Parts of Some Sextets, 1965/2019, a new publication exploring Rainer’s reimagining of her iconic 1965 performance, Parts of Some Sextets (PoSS), for the 2019 Performa Biennial in New York.
In collaboration with Emily Coates, Parts of Some Sextets simultaneously remade history and formed an entirely new work. This new publication explores every aspect of Rainer’s reconstruction, addressing how we write and rewrite history through our actions and words, elucidating on how artistic choices of what to include and what to omit—consciously and unconsciously—contribute to the larger social narrative of what we remember and what we forget.
Remembering a Dance will be available for purchase at the event, and Rainer will be present for signing throughout the evening.
Thank you.

26. Heide Hatry, FF Member, at School of Visual Arts, Manhattan, June 20, and more
Heide Hatry, Artist in Residence at (SVA), NYC.
Lecture: June 20.
Exhibition /Open studios: July 25
Heide Hatry is the 2023 Artist in Residence for the MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), NYC.
https://artpractice.sva.edu/artist-in-residence#/heide-hatry/ (including their classic questionnaire)
As part of the MFA lecture series, Heide Hatry will be delivering an Artist Talk on June 20, 2023, from 5:00 to 6:30pm.
The event will take place at the SVA MFA art practice building located at 335 West 16th Street, 5th floor, New York, NY 10011.
During her residency, Heide Hatry will be teaching a workshop on making unique artists’ books, which will culminate in an exhibition and open studios on July 25th (more details to be announced).
Before establishing herself as an artist in New York, Hatry spent nearly 20 years as a rare bookseller in Heidelberg, Germany, and her relationship to the book as art medium is informed by that experience.
Her work is recognized for its exploration of the human body, often incorporating animal flesh, organs, and other unconventional, often discarded, disdained, or “taboo” materials. Among her fundamental preoccupations are identity, gender roles, the nature of aesthetic experience and the meaning of beauty, the effects of knowledge upon perception, the human exploitation of the natural world, and the social oblivion that permits atrocity to persist in our midst.
Hatry has curated numerous exhibitions and has shown her own work at museums and galleries worldwide. She has produced more than 200 artist’s books, edited dozens of art catalogues, and her significant projects, including Skin, Heads and Tales, Not a Rose, and Icons in Ash were documented in monographic books.
See more of her work at https://heidehatry.com/
Heide Hatry is the visionary behind iconsinash.com, an art enterprise aimed at providing solace and support to grieving individuals, as well as the founder of polarbearfest.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping combat the climate crisis through public art action.
Thank you.
