Roger Shimomura

All American

Extended through Saturday, June 15th

219 Bowery, Floor 2

New York, NY 10002

An Artforum “must see show,” All American is Roger Shimomura’s first solo exhibition in New York in over a decade and his first with the gallery.

Shimomura juxtaposes images from contemporary America and traditional Japan to create a complicated layering of pictorial information and social observation. The paintings in All American are poignant, satirical, playful, and full of outrage, exemplifying Shimomura’s career-long exploration of themes such as xenophobia and cross-cultural tensions.

5. Frank Moore, FF Alumn, now online at podcasters.spotify.com

This past Wednesday, June 5, we appeared on a podcast, the Independent Idaho podcast hosted by Jeremy Maxand, the Executive Director of LINC. It was a really great show!! Jeremy started by asking how each of us ended up with Frank and we were both able to give detailed accounts of that history. Jeremy asked good questions. Linda was able to tell a large part of Frank’s history including: how he realized he had to leave home or he never would; how he hitchhiked to Santa Fe and had to stay in a crash pad  for a few months until Louise arrived and have strangers feed him and put him on the toilet, etc.; how he hitchhiked to the commune in Massachusetts and met his wife Debbie there; how the community in Berkeley was started through workshops and evolved into people becoming households; rehearsing Meb at a strip club on Broadway in San Francisco and meeting Dirk at the Mabuhay Gardens and doing Meb and the Outrageous Beauty Revue there; and how the group dissolved. Jeremy also wanted to know Frank’s involvement in the disability movement in Berkeley and Linda told him about how Frank was a controversial figure in the disabled community there, how he emphasized getting your friends to be your caregivers instead of hiring strangers because you could depend on your friends more than strangers and how Frank was just a “person” doing his art rather than a “disabled person” doing art. He also asked how we ended up in Idaho and we told him the story of how we moved to freedom during the pandemic to escape California’s trend towards fear and authoritarianism. There were lots more stories and Linda also read Frank’s poem, “Wrapping/Rocking”. The show went almost two hours! And after the show we sat and talked for another hour! He gave us a tour of the place and said that he would like to stay in touch and maybe have dinner sometime. We enthusiastically agreed.

I was digging through a crate of old photos and found this amazing pic of me getting a piano lesson from dad. When I hit a wrong note, father would hit me on the head with a hammer! I was also lucky enough to inherit my father’s beautiful giant hands, but it made it so hard to play properly. Ironic because it made me mess up a lot! Needless to say, I have more than a few holes in my head.   Oh, dad!

12. Tamar Ettun, FF Alumn, at Ford Foundation, Manhattan, thru Aug. 10

Dear friends,

Hoping your breath is a constant reminder of hope these days!

I am excited to invite you to see my Purple Placenta at the Ford Foundation’s Cantando Bajito: Incantations. The purple placenta–purple and tight on the inside, yellow and loose on the outside–has been a source of softness for me on these harsh days. She contains dozens of hidden stories that people sent me about birth, abortion, miscarriage and loss, and I dream she can serve as a soft landing for grief and for hope.

https://www.fordfoundation.org/about/the-ford-foundation-center-for-social-justice/ford-foundation-gallery/exhibitions/cantando-bajito-incantations

The Ford Foundation Gallery is pleased to present Cantando Bajito: Incantations curated by Roxana Fabius, Kobe Ko, and Beya Othmani on view June 5 – August 10, 2024.  Exhibiting artists: Amina Agueznay, Seba Calfuqueo, IV Chan, Tamar Ettun, Serene Hui, siren eun young jung, Mônica Ventura, and Osías Yanov.

The second chapter of the year-long series, Cantando Bajito: Incantations, brings together artists who consider ancestral, contemporary, and future-facing networks of support and care that safeguard feminized bodies through forms of knowledge transmission.

Such networks—symbolic systems, subversive spaces, or covert forms of language—are as varied as the communities that develop them. They include Nüshu, a form of script passed from mother to daughter in China; the use of henna as an agent of protection; and forms of therapeutic communication that have been deemed “gossip.” All have long existed, whether in the shadows or in plain sight. Preserved not in written history but in the body, these channels prepare feminized bodies for potential violence while giving them tools to resist it.

Sending love for an easy summer,

Tamar Ettun

Dear Friends,

I assume you can guess that the Hans Bellmer quote that John Lee chose as the epigraph for Bravin Lee’s new artists’ book exhibition resonates with me, and I’m very excited to invite you to 3 promising group shows at which I hope you’ll see work that, while not necessarily wicked, shocking, outrageous, immoral, indecent, disreputable, appalling, shameful, or reprehensible (yes, I took a look at my thesaurus), engages the scandal of the world in ways that make you feel the intensity of our situation here.

15. Judy Dunaway, FF Alumn, on Governors Island, Manhattan, thru Aug. 18

http://www.judydunaway.com/aeronaut.html

AERONAUT

a sound installation by Judy Dunaway

part of the

Harvestworks “New Waves in Art and Tech” Exhibition

Building 10A, Nolan Park

Governors Island, NYC

Fri/Sat/Sun 11:30am-4pm

May 17 – August 18, 2024

This site-specific sound installation commemorates pioneer daredevil aviator Charles K. (“Charlie”) Hamilton making the first round trip flight between New York City and Philadelphia on June 13, 1910, taking off from and returning to Governors Island. Hamilton was, in the words of the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission, “known for his dangerous dives, spectacular crashes, and extensive reconstructive surgeries.” Hamilton survived more than 60 crashes, but ultimately died an early death at age 33 as the cumulative result of his injuries.

The installation works with the themes of air, floating and simple motorized devices featuring inflated latex balloons as sound conduits. In the “Floating” sound sculptures, donut-shaped latex balloons located both in the secret inner stairwell and the pantry room naturally amplify low frequencies made by motors hidden in the center (no speakers or external sound sources are used). Invisible patterns of sound intensity create silent acoustic “holes” in the pantry room, reflecting the visual image. Meanwhile, the artist will contribute daily to her “tapestry” of twister balloons in colors that reflect on the life of “aeronaut” Charles Hamilton (“Balloon Tapestry with the Sound of Its Own Making – Tribute to Robert Morris). The sound of the making of the tapestry, along with any ancillary sounds, will be recorded. When the activity is not happening, the tapestry, in its ongoing state, will be displayed in the room and the recording will be played back, both as a documentation of the ongoing process. As the audio library increases, the balloon tapestries will slowly disintegrate.

Balloon tapestry sound action will typically occur from 1pm-1:30pm each day of the exhibition.

16. Beverly Naidus, FF Alumn, at China Cultural Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, opening June 19

“The Tacoma Story Hive project” co-facilitated by Beverly Naidus and the late Dr. Bob Spivey, will be part of the “Co-inhabitation” exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a collaboration between the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongching, China and the Network of International Culturalink Entities. It is scheduled to open on the 19th of June. The exhibition location is at the China Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Lot 1-2-1, Menara Bangkok Bank, Berjaya Central Park, 50450 Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia. Participating artists are Betsy Damon, Aviva Rahmani, Beverly Naidus, Basia Irland, David Haley, Ruth Wallen, Tattfoo Tan, Michael Lueng, Zheng Bo, Long Pan

Introduction to the exhibition description by curator, Jin Lipeng, artist and professor of eco-art at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute: “Over two hundred years ago, the great German scientist Humboldt foresaw the climate crisis caused by humans today. His transdisciplinary thinking viewed continents, oceans, forests, and human activities as an interlocking whole, seeing nature as a complex network of interconnectedness, interactions, and reciprocity. In that era, his foresight and wisdom revealed the significant importance of forests in sustaining the web of life, exposing the impacts of deforestation and monoculture on soil conservation and climate. Unfortunately, Humboldt’s concerns have become a reality: raging floods, scorching heatwaves, rising seas, and coral bleaching… These urgent voices and signals from our Planet are repeatedly urging humanity to wake up.

Humboldt’s grand vision and wisdom were derived from his years of understanding, observation, exploration, documentation, and depiction of nature, his free navigation through the realms of climate, geography, geology, ocean currents, biology, economics, politics, and arts, and his integration of scholarship with lectures and public empowerment. These methods bear a resemblance to today’s ecoart practices of walking, dialogue, observing, sensing, and connecting, linking various dimensions such as art, science, education, public engagement, and activism.

As a hope-inspiring practice, ecoart seeks to creatively address the urgent issues such as climatic chaos and species extinction through their collaboration with human and nonhuman communities. The ecoart practices displayed in the “Co-inhabitation” exhibition aim to actively restore our homes and minds through poetic actions. Echoing Humboldt’s vision and insights, the exhibition invites you to uncover and connect the complex, interconnected systems of climate, ecology, economic, politics, and societies in the context of globalization and Anthropocene. In so doing, it encourages you to rethink our life habits and envision ways of ecological co-inhabitation with other human and other-than-human beings in the web of life on Earth (Ricardo Rozzi).

21. Jim Johnson, FF Alumn, now online at discopie.com

Good morning.  I’m happy to announce that I’ve posted two more recent works on my Paintings page:  http://www.discopie.com/Paintings1.html  And, I’ve made an additional Paintings page as well. Not as much scrolling now.

“The Crazed Janitor” is a pangram (uses every letter of the alphabet at least once) and is color-coded according to letter usage frequency.  The consonants are all grays between black for the T (the most frequently used consonant) and white for the Z (least frequently used).

The vowels are coded similarly but in spectral colors, so that E is red (longest wavelength) and the Y is coded violet (shortest wavelength).  It’s an example of a mode of composition that I’ve called Procedural and is basically a systematic application of rules as in an algorithm.

The font is Magic Squares, an original digital typeface.  It’s available for download at:  http://www.discopie.com/NewType.html

Enjoy and Peace,

Jim Johnson
