1. Suzanne Harris, Glenda Hydler, Martha Wilson, live at Printed Matter, Manhattan and online

Suzanne Harris – An Anarchitectural Body of Work: A Conversation

Hosted in person by Printed Matter (231 11th Ave, NYC) and streamed online via the Franklin Furnace LOFT, the event marks the U.S.-American launch of “An Anarchitectural Body of Work: Suzanne Harris and the Downtown New York Artists Community of the 1970s” by Friederike Schaefer, the first book published about the life and work of this groundbreaking yet historically overlooked artist.

The event is a conversation with Martha Wilson (Artist, Founding Director Emerita, Franklin Furnace), Friederike Schaefer (PhD, Freie Universität Berlin), and Glenda F. Hydler (artist); moderated by Jessamyn Fiore (Co-Director, Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark)

This conversation will illuminate the essential contribution of artist, dancer, and educator Suzanne Harris (1942 – 1979) to the downtown artists community in the 1970s, as she played a pivotal role in 112 Greene Street, FOOD Restaurant, The Natural History of the American Dancer and the group Anarchitecture which included Gordon Matta-Clark, Tina Girouard, and Laurie Anderson among others. Both an active member of the emerging SoHo art scene and a world traveler, Harris exhibited in the U.S. and Europe, and collaborated and performed with many artists and choreographers including Joan Jonas, Richard Serra, Keith Sonnier, Trisha Brown, Carmen Beuchat, and Steve Paxton. By merging her work as both a dancer and sculptor in her artistic practice, she contributed to the developing field of installation art. Her site-specific installation LOCUS/UP↓〉ONE (1976) on the Battery Park City Landfill became a precursor for the Art on the Beach series by Creative Time.

Due to its ephemeral nature, the preservation of her body of—and at—work has only been made possible through a joint effort of her friends, fellow artists, and researchers over a span of 45 years. In addition to the publication, archival material of the estate of Suzanne Harris is now accessible at the New York University Fales Library and Special Collections, and, as part of The Franklin Furnace Artists’ Books Collection, digitally at Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc.

Speakers

Martha Wilson (born 1947 in Newtown, Pennsylvania) is an American feminist performance artist and the Founding Director Emerita of Franklin Furnace Archive, the independent artists’ organization now in residence at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Over the past four decades she has developed and “created innovative photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformation, and ‘invasions’ of other peoples personas.” She is a recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, and an Obie Award and a Bessie Award for commitment to artists’ freedom of expression. She is represented by P•P•O•W Gallery in New York City.

Friederike Schäfer is an art historian, and currently works as a postdoc researcher in the Cluster of Excellence Temporal Communities at Freie Universität Berlin on her new publication “Earth(ly) Matters. How Exhibition Spaces Capture Natural Environments.” From 2017 to 2021, she was an academic associate at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG). She pursued her doctorate “An Anarchitectural Body of Work. Suzanne Harris and the Downtown New York Artists’ Community in the 1970s” (De Gruyter, 2023) as part of the Cluster of Excellence Bild Wissen Gestaltung. Ein interdisziplinäres Labor (Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory”) at Humboldt-University of Berlin.

Glenda F. Hydler is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She is a painter and photographer. Her early work consisted of creating over 100 one-of-a-kind artist’s books, which were acquired by the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University. Additionally, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC has included some of Hydler’s book works in their collection. The Jerome Robbins Dance Foundation will acquire Hydler’s dance photographs from Los Angeles and New York in the upcoming months, as well as Suzanne Harris’s dance works and her music involvement from the 60s and 70s. One ongoing project of Hydler’s has been archiving Harris’s art since her death in 1979. A large part of the estate is now located in the Fales Library.

Jessamyn Fiore is a curator and the Co-Director of the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark. Exhibitions curated that included Suzanne Harris: 112 Greene Street: The Early Years (1970–1974) at David Zwirner in New York (2011), which led to her editing the critically acclaimed, eponymous catalogue, published by David Zwirner & Radius Books (2012). This was followed by Gordon Matta-Clark, Suzanne Harris, Tina Girouard: The 112 Greene Street Years at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago,  in 2013 and Artist Run New York: The Seventies at the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation in Dubai, UAE in March 2017.

This event is supported by the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark.

This publication has been made possible through support from the Terra Foundation for American Art International Publication Program of CAA.

This project is made possible with funds from Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the members and friends of Franklin Furnace Archive.

2. Erica Mosco, Jeff Pippin, Linda Sibio, FF Alumns, new publication launch at Birdcage Comic Café, San Bernadino, CA, June 20

Bezerk Productions Linda Sibio presents a mental health coloring book called, “See, See, See, More! Listen with your Eyes.” This project is sponsored by the California Arts Council/Creative Corps grant. On Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 3 pm to 5 pm, Bezerk Productions will be having a gala bash to unveil the coloring book to the public, those with mental health challenges, and providers. At the gala, we will hand out 100 free coloring books to guests in attendance. All artists, who are on the emotional behavioral spectrum, will be present to talk about their work. Cathy Dye, Lilian Iskandar, Mia Jette, Erica Mosco, Jeff

Pippin, Jeff Pope, and Denise Smith.

Bezerk Productions is a 501(c)(3) located at 56300, 29 Palms Highway, Yucca Valley (behind Unity Thrift Store). Bezerk Productions has been in business since 2001 and started with the original version of Cracked Eggs, an interdisciplinary troupe of individuals on the emotional behavioral spectrum. In 2021, Bezerk began Cracked Eggs again with funds from the Mental Health Services Act (Innovation Division of the Department of Behavioral Health in San Bernardino). We offer workshops twice a week to clubhouses and Tay Centers in the county. A year ago, Bezerk Productions received a Creative Corps grant from the California Arts Council to fund the mental health coloring book. (bezerkpro.org) The coloring book is a result of a year-long grant-funded program, held twice a week at the Bird Cage Comic Café (community sponsor) located at 165 West Hospitality Lane, Unit 17, in San Bernardino, California. This program started in October 2023, with training for teachers. In this training, Linda Sibio

taught how to work with mentally challenged populations by teaching visual artist techniques from her class called “The Insanity Principle.”

This program uses the thinking structures of schizophrenia as its modality for teaching. The artists chosen were: Claudia Bucher (conceptual art that creates imaginative, philosophical speculations), Georgeann Deen (dedicated to experimental narratives) Leslie Matamoros (20 years experience in interpretive exhibit development), Linda Sibio (creator of Cracked Eggs/contemporary solo artist), Neil Doshi (Expert Graphic Designer/Teacher at Otis Parsons School of Design), Erica Mosco (Former Cracked Eggs student, first-time teacher), Jeff Pippin (professional Musician and singer and Visual Artist). Student workshops were twice a week starting November 1, 2023 and ending March 1, 2024.

The next phase was gathering pages (400 drawings) and selecting the best for the coloring book. Bezerk Productions chose 100 pages for the coloring book. Silk screen printer, David Fick printed the full-color cover (David is best known for his work with artists such as David Hockney and Robert Williams, www.idavidgraficks.com). The front cover of the book is featured below. It contains a collage done by all the artists combined with ink drawings. With experts at the helm, we feel it is worthy of attention. We will be giving away 100 copies of “See, See, See, More!” to the public, organizations that deal with mental health, and those who are on the emotional behavioral spectrum (a phrase we are trying to popularize). There will be an ample supply of crayons for those who want to get started on their coloring books. Coloring has been proven to be a great meditative hobby!

We hope you will join us at the gala. There will be finger food, lemonade, tea, and coffee. We will have three performances by Erica Mosco, Jeff Pippin, and his band followed by an award ceremony. Other happenings include the selling of t-shirts by Linda Sibio from her line Hip Madness and a few one-of-a-kind killer t-shirts by Erica Mosco. Sales will go towards funding more workshops like “See, See, See, More! Listen with Your Eyes.” Again, this event is from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Birdcage Comic Café on June 20, 2024. Don’t miss it!

5. Max Gimblett, FF Member, at Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland, NZ, opening June 4

Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues,

I am thrilled to announce that Gow Langsford Gallery opens Max Gimblett’s “Hands of Gold” with a celebration on Tuesday, June 4th from 5-7pm at their Auckland City Gallery. The exhibition runs through June 29.

You can view the show online here

https://gowlangsfordgallery.co.nz/exhibitions/336-hands-of-gold-max-gimblett

and the brilliant press release is below.

Press Release

Gow Langsford Gallery

28-36 Wellesley Street East

Auckland CBD, 1010

New Zealand

Gow Langsford is delighted to present Hands of Gold, an exhibition of new works by Max Gimblett. Hands of Gold features a stunning array of paintings, the majority of which take the quatrefoil shape – a hallmark of Gimblett’s oeuvre. While this essential form repeats, the treatment of surface varies considerably from work to work. There are evenly surfaced monochromes, grid-like patterns, and extravagantly gestural brush strokes in a rich array of colours. What shines through in this diverse range of approaches to painting is the quality of Gimblett’s craft and his distinctive artistic vision.

Gimblett is one of New Zealand’s foremost practitioners of abstract painting, particularly of gestural abstraction. He has engaged extensively with philosophical traditions from both Eastern and Western cultures. These fields of knowledge have permeated his artistic practice, as he has created a painting language entirely of his own. In a review of Gimblett’s work in Artforum magazine, writer Ida Panicelli stated, “Since the early 1980s, the artist has favored the quatrefoil—a format that breaks with the notion of the canvas as a picture window. Suggesting a four-petaled flower, it also evokes the four cardinal points, the four dimensions, or the arms of the Eastern Orthodox cross. It is inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, primeval symbol of female fecundity, as well as by the completely male, quadrilobate design of the tsuba, the Japanese sword guard. Finally, the form alludes to Carl Jung’s four fundamental human activities—sensing, feeling, thinking, and intuiting—pointing toward the centre of being, like a mandala of wholeness.” [1]

This depth of underlying philosophical thought opens up an array of interpretive possibilities. A viewer can engage with them as meditations on the human condition, as richly emotional works of expressionism, or as satisfying works of abstraction with a unique aesthetic. However one chooses to engage with Gimblett’s work, its quality is undeniable. The paintings presented in Hands of Gold further embellish Gimblett’s storied career as an artist.

Born in New Zealand in 1935, Gimblett has been primarily based in New York City since 1972. His extraordinary artistic journey spans over six decades, with an extensive history of high-profile exhibitions and inclusion in public and private collections. He continues to exhibit regularly in both the United States and New Zealand.

Very best wishes,

Matt Jones

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 15, 4-6pm

Gallery Hours: Thursday – Sunday, 12 – 5pm

“Given the state of the world, I have been thinking about heroes – and heroines – and what constitutes the “heroic,” so I went searching for heroes and heroism in the Flatfiles at Kentler International Drawing Space. What I found were artists democratizing and celebrating heroes of all kinds – from the everyday to the mythic – and everything in between.

‘We could be heroes, just for one day,’ David Bowie’s 1977 lyric 2 also democratizes the possibilities for heroism. We and our lovers, our friends and family, neighbors and caregivers who go the extra mile…all of us could be heroes, even if just for one day. Heroes without capes live alongside the superheroes who wear them; and alongside heroic gods, mythic beings, and the celebrities we idolize, too.” – Curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley

18. Emerith Herrera Valdes, FF Alumn, at Kunstraum LLC, Brooklyn, opening June 2

Please join us for the opening reception of the group exhibition, Identity in Context on Sunday, June 2, from 4pm-6pm at 20 Grand Avenue, Loft 509 in Brooklyn.

Identity in Context

June 2 – 30, 2024

Curated by Emireth Herrera Valdes

Opening Reception – June 2, 4-6pm

Featuring Artists:

Bruna D’Alessandro, Steven Anthony Johnson II, Kahory Kamiya,

Clarisse Lo, Salome Rigvava,

Luis Alvaro Sahagun, and Kerry R. Thompson.

Kunstraum LLC presents Identity in Context originating from the Kunstraum network. This exhibition is curated by curator-in-residence Emireth Herrera Valdés. Featuring seven artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, this exhibition examines layers of identity across different contexts.

Clarisse Lo’s photographic works, Echo and Echo #4, 2023 examines familial bonds and generational connections. Capturing the essence of her grandfather’s life, each photograph reveals layers of existence, inviting viewers on a journey of rediscovery that transcends generations. Steven Anthony Johnson II’s artwork, Mae Mae and No-No, 2021 addresses issues of identity and “otherness.” Crafted from charcoal, graphite, and wax, this drawing captures both motion and stillness within a domestic scene, encouraging profound reflection on race and perception in contemporary society. Made of beads, copal smoke, family photos, found objects and diverse construction materials like rope and gorilla glue, Luis Alvaro Sahagun’s Limpia no.17, 2023 evokes spiritual healing and pays homage to marginalized laboring communities. The baroque-style frame celebrates resilience and heritage while confronting contradictions within cultural identity.

Kahori Kamiya’s Sanctuary, 2023 excavates her Japanese roots, exploring themes of spirituality and nature. Inspired by nature, Kamiya’s expressive sculptures reflect on the interconnectedness of life and the enduring nurturing, caring, and loving essence derived from both her Japanese heritage and her experiences as a mother. Bruna D’Alessandro’s Portrait With Steel Breasts, 2024 embodies the artist’s empowerment and expresses her identity as a sculptor, woman, and individual. In collaboration with photographer Olga Antipina, the artist transforms the act of wearing these sculpted steel breasts into a poetic statement, seamlessly merging self-expression with artistry. Hammer formed by the artist specifically to be worn, the sculptures Steel Breasts, 2023 symbolize strength and resilience. Salome Rigvava’s Valentine’s Day in the Blue Room, 2024 offers a personal reflection on the symbolism of femininity and cultural identity. With a focus on societal constructs, Rigvava’s painting navigates the nuances of self-awareness through soft yet psychologically charged tones.

Kerry R. Thompson’s painting, Kalahari, 2023 navigates the connections between natural systems and human intervention, prompting contemplation on humanity’s role in shaping the environment and its impact on identity. Through a contrast of scientific illustration and traditional oil painting, Thompson explores the delicate balance between natural and artificial elements, inviting viewers to ponder the intricate interdependence of the natural world.

Through diverse perspectives and mediums, Identity in Context exhibition prompts dialogue and introspection, fostering a deeper understanding of human identity. This exhibition is on view at Kunstraum LLC gallery from June 2nd – 30th, 2024.

BravinLee is pleased to present Artists’ Book Month II The World is a Scandal.  BravinLee has been exhibiting artists’ books forever.

The artist book reveals artists at their most unguarded, and authentically personal.  The artist shares an intimate sequence of moments.  As inauthenticity prospers and pan-Fascism rears its head and blurs the line between reality and nightmare, the simple honest tangibility of the artist book is a refuge.

We are pleased to include a selection of books and photographs from our friends at the esteemed Ubu Gallery.  If you don’t know them, you should.

Since its founding in 1994, Ubu Gallery (https://www.ubugallery.com/artists/) has presented nearly 100 exhibitions of 20th Century avant-garde art, with an emphasis on the inter-war period of the 1920s-1930s, particularly the Dada, Surrealist, and Constructivist movements. Ubu exhibits paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, and ephemera (books, posters, graphic design, etc.) and, wherever possible, highlights the interrelationships among these art forms. Ubu Gallery is a well-known presence on the international cultural scene and enjoys a worldwide reputation for their serious explorations of areas covered by few other galleries, including acclaimed survey exhibitions of Polish, Romanian, Czech and other eastern European avant-garde art. Ubu’s focus on the avant-garde, particularly on historically important artists and movements that have not received appropriate attention, has earned the gallery frequent reviews in the international press focused on the visual arts.

We are extremely pleased to announce Agnes Denes’s one-person show at the Lunds konsthall, in Lund, Sweden, featuring selected works from the 1970s to the present that exemplify her increasingly relevant ecological, aesthetic, and philosophical concerns.

Highlights of the exhibition include her newest piece, Bird Migration 1948 – 2024, a poetic discourse on the artist’s personal history told in her own voice through multiple filmed images of migratory birds. The work, produced for the exhibition with the support of the Lunds konsthall, looks back to Denes’s first ecological art work, The Bird Project, conceived while she was a teenager living in Stockholm.

Denes’s photographs of Rice/Tree/Burial (1977–79) are also on view. Acknowledged as the first site work with specific ecological concerns, it was conceived as a private ritual in 1968 and announced her lifelong commitment to environmental works. The piece was reenacted ten years later, on a very large scale at Artpark in Lewiston, New York, adjacent to Niagara Falls, which became a fourth element of the work. A time capsule, containing the microfilmed responses to a questionnaire on the future of humanity, was buried with instructions to be opened in 1000 years, and commemorated with a plaque on the site. It was the first of many to follow including one created for this exhibition.

To deepen the understanding of Denes’s thinking, the exhibition also includes prints from her early Philosophical Drawings series and a selection of images from Psychograph, 1970–1972, for which she distributed a penetrating questionnaire to various art world colleagues which were then analyzed by two licensed psychologists.

Agnes Denes is regarded as the leading pioneer of the present environmental art movement. Dealing with cultural and social issues that address the challenges of global survival, she is also known for works created in a wide range of mediums, investigating science, mathematics, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, poetry, history, and music.

Born in Hungary in 1931, she lived in Sweden before arriving in the US in the 1950s. She has participated in more than 700 solo and group exhibitions and her works are in the collections of important institutions throughout the world.

Works by the artist are also currently on view in Extreme Tension: Art Between Politics and Society 1945–2000, Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (through September 28, 2025); Abstraction After Modernism: Recent Acquisitions, The Menil Collection, Houston (through August 25, 2024); Artistes et paysans: Battre la campagne, Les Abattoirs, Musée—Frac Occitanie, Toulouse, France, (through August 25, 2024); and RE/SISTERS, Foto Museum, Antwerp (through August 18, 2024).
