Keijaun Thomas, FF Alumn, is the recipient of Queer/Art’s inaugural illuminations grant for Black trans women. The New York-based artist receives a $10,000 cash award as well as studio visits from members of the judges’ panel.

The pioneering artist Agnes Denes, who planted a wheat field against the backdrop of New York’s Twin Towers in 1982, one of her many landmark works of art around the globe, has raised a flag, “The Future is Fragile, Handle with Care,” above the roof of Tate Britain as a cultural call to action in response to the dual crisis of COVID-19 and climate change. The installation marks the conclusion of Healing Arts London and the launch of The Future is Unwritten Artists Response Fund to support artist-led projects contributing to improved mental, social and environmental health in the wake of the pandemic.
Leading UN environmental agencies have described the virus as nature’s first “warning shot” to civilizations playing with fire, a stark reminder of the need for cooperation across borders, sectors, and generations. Denes’s flag calls out for the urgency of a global response not only to climate change (as she has been doing through artworks created during the past fifty years) and but also to its connection to COVID 19. It symbolizes the need for a collective response to these crises and how that can be transformed into a paradigm shift with all sectors of society contributing to a new vision of the world, acting creatively in solidarity for the common good. According to the artist, “Global dialogue and action are more crucial now than ever.” The flag will remain on the masthead above Tate Britain until XXXXX.
Tate Representative comments, “The raising of Agnes Denes’s flag above one of the UK’s most iconic museums represents the launch of Healing Arts 2021 global campaign.Healing Arts London was produced by CULTURUNNERS as part of the World Health Organization’s Solidarity Series of Events. It brought together a cultural coalition of partners including University College London, Community Jameel, The Art Newspaper, WHO Foundation, Hospital Rooms, Vivobarefoot, and the National Centre for Creative Health to explore the role of art in community healing and improved mental wellbeing in the context of COVID 19.

A primary figure among the concept-based artists who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, the American artist Agnes Denes is internationally known for works created in a wide range of mediums. Investigating science, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, poetry, history, and music, Denes’s artistic practice is distinctive in terms of its aesthetics and engagement with socio-political ideas. Born in Hungary in 1931, Agnes Denes was raised in Sweden and educated in the US. Spring has sprung, and we, your playful, hardworking ecosexuals are harvesting the fruits of our labors. Let’s start with how Beth wrote a highly competitive Guggenheim Fellowship grant in the category of filmmaking– and got it! It brings good attention to our work, and will help us get other grants. We will use the grant to produce the third in our trilogy of environmental documentaries made with an ecosexual gaze, Playing with Fire.
The silver lining of the COVID quarantine for us was that we could finish the book we had been working on for five years. Assuming the Ecosexual Position—the Earth as Lover is available for presale at our wonderful publisher’s website, University of Minnesota Press, or just ask a bookstore near you to order it. A book tour is in the works. This August/September we plan to go on a road trip in our camper-van crisscrossing the U.S.A. If anyone is interested in producing an event with us, we would love to schedule it. (Event details to be announced).

(Environmental Art, Research, Theory and Happenings, San Francisco. The Center will carry on our mission to produce art projects about serious environmental issues that also aim to make environmental art and activism more sexy, fun, and diverse.
Recent highlights–Annie was awarded the Tom of Finland Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Beth turned 60. We got both our vaccines and are feeling great!

Janes Calling is a 30-minute, virtual performance by six diverse actresses, all channeling the legendary activist, Jane Jacobs. Join our Janes online for this live video conference, as they weave together speeches given by Ms. Jacobs over her extensive career (1957-2000). They’ll be calling in from six unique locations—NYC buildings and properties that are, at this moment, in danger of destruction—to share stories about the city we love. Filling images and shapes into a container has been one of my recurring motifs since ever. Sometimes it’s spots and dots, lines and patterns, other times it’s faces and bodies. Every time different thoughts and emotions are triggered. I started large Black on White Crowd paintings filled with images of all kinds in 1996 as a counterpart to the abstractions of the Rag Rug group. After a while it became natural to add other colors. The bigger paintings in this show are divided by one or two caesurae, a kind of seam at which the forms on either side don’t match. There’s also a display of works on paper 1980-2017 tracing the kind of images that appear in the Crowd works. Lucio Pozzi
