Vernon Fisher, FF Alumn, In Memoriam
Vernon Fisher 1943 – 2023
We are deeply saddened to announce Vernon Fisher, our dear friend and brilliant artist, passed away at his home in Fort Worth, Texas due to complications from an earlier illness. Vernon was a legendary artist, educator, and mentor who taught us to challenge ourselves and our minds through his paintings, writings, and installations. As a visionary with a keen intellect and a fierce sense of humor, his importance and influence will remain with us all for years to come. Our thirty year relationship with him is among our most treasured experiences. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his loving wife and partner Julie Bozzi at this time.
“My work is an allegory of our interactions with the stuff we call the world, it is a metaphor for our finding our way. I see myself more as an observer than anything else, I just see all this stuff and point to it. I am like a comedian who simply walks on stage and reads a newspaper. You don’t have to make it funny or absurd: it already is.” – Vernon Fisher

1. Deborah Castillo, FF FUND Recipient 2022, at Washington Square Park (Garibaldi Plaza), Manhattan, May 16
The performance consists of a historical review of the myth of Salome as a representation strategy. The staging of the myth of Salomé will take place in a live performance, at Washington Square Park on May 16 at 8:30pm. Salomé appears on the floor embracing the head of Saint John the Baptist in wet clay, who begins to bite until reaching a climax of frantic movements that culminate the erotic act with a shapeless face. This artistic research proposes to add to the social debate on iconoclasm as a political strategy of representation.
About Deborah: I’m a Mexico City-based multidisciplinary artist, interested in exploring the relationships between power and the body. Having left Venezuela, my country of origin, my practice has been deeply marked by migration and displacement. I employ different mediums, incorporating performance, video, photography, sculpture, and installation in order to dissect the grand idea of power, its structures, and its weight on sexuality, social expectations, desire, identity, and the construction of contemporary myths. Via a method of play and extensive experimentation, I facilitate a space of discovery within constructed contexts, inviting the audience to assemble their own meanings.

Salome was made possible, in part, by the Franklin Furnace Fund supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Le’Andra LeSuer:
ANTI•VENOM brings together seven multidisciplinary artists to ask: How do we affirm our humanity in the face of complex harm? In this luminous exhibition of videos, the artists face a troubled reality and transform it. With immersive works in one, two and three channels, the artists direct our gaze towards radiant visions of the future.
As bill-after-bill emerges to criminalize trans and queer bodies, Jacolby Satterwhite’s opalescent communities vogue a narrative of interconnectedness, warning that we are in a malignant hell when we hurt each other. Conditions of harm are met with arresting beauty as cobalt and indigo spill out from the installation by Le’Andra LeSeur. Amelia Winger-Bearskin’s layered videos, glitch rainbows and dissolve architectures with AI. Joaquin Trujillo reclaims the scapegoated old man in El Viejo. Adorned in red velvet, silver bells and a confetti of ribbons, Trujillo dances a path of return for dispossessed queers. In this year of the rabbit, Andrew Thomas Huang’s muse is a humble young restaurant worker. Through Thomas Huang’s lens, the banality of Matt’s life is beautifully disrupted when he is seduced by an alluring God from the Qing dynasty. In Corinne Spencer’s mesmerizing installation, Black feminine subjects care for one another across generations of life and death. In Sankofa, a Ghanaian principle that represents returning to the past in order to inform a better future, Anna Parisi places viewers in the politicized terrain of Black hair.
The magical quality of the pieces in this show draws from the specific communities the artists are rooted in. And yet, the hermetic power of these artworks extends far beyond the specific. We hope that many needed antidotes might be found in this exhibition experience.

Saya Woolfalk
The Coretta Scott King Peace and Meditation Garden
The King Center, Atlanta
We are extremely pleased to announce a major public artwork by Saya Woolfalk who honors legendary activist and civil rights leader Coretta Scott King in Atlanta, in the first of three major works commissioned by Hulu to commemorate the achievements of historic women. Monuments to the conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the eminent Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg are also planned for Miami and Los Angeles, respectively. These visually related works will embody the individual spirits of each woman.
The Coretta Scott King Peace and Meditation Garden, situated on the grounds of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change (The King Center), was created with the support of Hulu, furthering the streamer’s commitment to bridging the gender gap in public art as part of its Made By Her: Monuments project.
This newest work by Saya Woolfalk, a pavilion consisting of a laser-cut, painted steel canopy that overlays a circular mosaic floor made of multi-colored polished concrete tiles, expands her ongoing dedication to themes of empathy, understanding, and “changing the way we tell stories about America.”
While working closely with the King Family historian Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado in the conception of the work, Woolfalk learned that Coretta Scott King was an avid gardener with a passion for roses and that her husband always gave her a rose before embarking on his many travels.
Both the dome-shaped canopy and the floor are patterned in the shape of roses, with the floor specifically inspired by the Coretta Scott King Rose, a hybrid named for her that was introduced in 2013 in honor of what would have been her 86th birthday.
Encircling the exterior of the dome are the words: EMPATHY, CHANGE, FREEDOM, JUSTICE, PEACE COMPASSION, LIBERTY, RIGHTS, TRUTH, and COMMUNITY. A quotation from Mrs. King can be seen from within: “WOMEN, IF THE SOUL OF THE NATION IS TO BE SAVED I BELIEVE THAT YOU MUST BECOME ITS SOUL.” A lectern in the center of the structure refers to the way Mrs. King was most frequently depicted in the press, photographed behind a podium, speaking in public. Her portrait, etched in glass, and several microphones are placed at the top, with one live microphone that enables viewers to actively participate in the work.
While the finished artwork is a gift from Hulu and the artist to the city of Atlanta, the King Family specifically requested that it be located on the grounds of the King Center adjacent to the Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” World Peace Rose Garden. The artist participated in the development of the surrounding garden by requesting that the design reflect the aesthetics of the pavilion and that aromatic flowers be planted to provide a sense of calm and healing. Landscaping around the Pavilion was undertaken by horticultural specialists at Home Depot in a program designed to work with community projects.
The official dedication ceremony takes place on April 27, 2023.
Saya Woolfalk creates works of art that incorporate the African American, European American, and Japanese influences of her family background. Alluding to science fiction, feminist theory, mythology, anthropology, archaeology, Eastern religion, and fashion, she re-imagines a utopian, empathic world through painting, sculpture, video, performance, multimedia installations, and public artworks.
Born in 1979 in Gifu City, Japan, Woolfalk was raised in the United States. She earned her B.A. in visual art and economics from Brown University in 2001 and her MFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. A Fulbright grant to study in Brazil the following year and a 2007 residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem are among the many honors and awards she has received.
Woolfalk has presented multimedia works and performances at museums, galleries, and alternative spaces throughout the U.S. and in Asia including solo shows at the Newark Museum of Art, NJ: the Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City, MO; the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH; the Mead Art Museum, Amherst, MA; The SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, GA; the Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE; the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; among others. She has also participated in group shows at the Brooklyn Museum; the Fowler Museum, Los Angeles; the Seattle Art Museum; the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; MoMA PS1; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; and many other museums and galleries throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
She recently completed a multi-part, multimedia installation, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. She has also produced two murals for the Metropolitan Transit Authority in conjunction with the Percent for Art Program; a mural for a public school in Queens for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs School Construction Authority; and a basketball court in Marcus Garvey Park supported by the New York City Parks Department and Publicolor.
Works by Saya Woolfalk are in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum; the Buffalo AKG Art Museum; the Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA; the Mead Museum of Art, Amherst, MA; the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, the Newark Museum of Art, NJ; The Zabludowicz Art Trust, London; the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC, and many other institutions.
Works by the artist are currently on view in Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, Philadelphia, PA (through October 8, 2023), The Place We Once Remembered, Wave Hill, Bronx, NY (April 22 – August 6, 2023) and will be seen in Women Reframe American Landscape: Contemporary Practices at The Thomas Cole National Historic Site, Catskill, NY (May 6-October 29, 2023).

Building on the success of last year’s riotous walk, Janes Return will return to the controversial Penn Station district with more Janes—in-person and online—to march along the streets where Ms. Jacobs once fought to save the original terminal. For Janes Return Returns, this year’s diverse band of rabble-rousers will channel our inspirational namesake with short performances, including Jacobs’ own words.
Carrying recreations of the iconic “Save Penn” signs, this live promenade will stop at sites currently in danger of demolition, conjuring the 1962 pickets that inspired NYC’s Landmarks law. In-person audiences can chant and sing along the way, while the Janes live-stream each other for online audiences who can’t make it to this rapidly changing neighborhood.
Thank you.

Chelsea: Viridian Artists presents “Director’s Choice, 2023,” juried by Vernita Nemec, April 25–May 20, 2023 with an opening reception: Saturday, April 29, 4–6pm.
As always, Viridian makes a concerted effort to expand the opportunities for outstanding artists’ work to be seen and exhibited. Consequently, the gallery director, Vernita Nemec, also selects artwork from those submitted for our Juried Competitions, first showing her selections digitally with the juried exhibition and later when scheduling permits, as a new exhibition entitled “Director’s Choice.” At Viridian, we feel it’s important to tangibly demonstrate that curatorial choice is often as much about personal taste as it is about the “quality” of the art, for “quality” in art is often open to opinion. Also, during the Director’s Choice exhibit, we plan to show the art selected by the juror digitally, as we previously had shown the Director’s Choices so that gallery visitors can see both curatorial selections.
The competition selection as always is difficult, but especially so for the nature of art in our world today encompasses a wide variety of methods, materials, and conceptualizations of what art is. Environmental and political concerns are more and more apparent in the art of the 21st century, and Nemec is especially interested in art that is concerned with these social issues and worldly concerns, particularly art that explores these concerns in new ways.
Curiously, both Ms. Ferrell and Ms. Nemec selected some of the same artists, despite the many outstanding and diverse submissions. And we are especially pleased that Stefani Bailey, Sung-Ji Huh, Stephanie Lempres and Lauren Cassidy are now represented by Viridian Artists. We look forward to sharing this fascinating exhibition of timely contemporary art by artists we are sure you will see more of in the future.

17. Betty Beaumont, FF Alumn, at Touchstones Gallery, Rochdale, UK, thru May 6
Betty Beaumont’s OCULUS in “A Tall Order!”:
Printed images of Betty Beaumont’s “OCULUS” and a sketched plan for the monument are currently on view in the group exhibition “A Tall Order!” from February 4 to May 6, 2023 at Touchstones Gallery in Rochdale, UK.
Beaumont is currently on location in Rochdale in discussion about this permanent sitework, to be located in the 445-meter bridge-covering built over the River Roch.
Opening a hole in this bridge-covering enables a two-meter lens to be installed. A different way of seeing its flowing water, “OCULUS” is an illuminated view of the River Roch – literally, historically, poetically, and metaphorically. Not only does lighting contribute to this perspective, text elaborates its illumination.
Images of Beaumont’s survey exhibition “Changing Landscapes” (1989) and her performance “RiverWalk” (1989) are also included in “A Tall Order!”
Beaumont has received numerous grants and awards including a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of California at Berkeley, and grants from Creative Capital, NEA, NYSCA, the Gottlieb Foundation, and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. In addition to numerous exhibitions in galleries in Europe, Asia, and the US, she has shown internationally at museums including The Centre Pompidou-Metz (France), The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandria, Egypt), National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto and Tokyo), Museum Het Domein (Sittard, Netherlands), Bibliotéca Nacional José Marti (Havana, Cuba), Whitney Museum of Art, MoMA P.S.1, Queens Museum, Hudson River Museum (Yonkers, NY), and Katonah Museum (Katonah, NY). Beaumont has held academic positions at the University of California at Berkeley, SUNY Purchase, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, New York University, and Columbia University.

Causality: when disparate elements are combined or random materials are stacked, when unlikely shapes are forged or incongruent designs are assembled, whether situationally mounted or unconventionally installed, this mishmashing, this mixed-amalgamation incites a new visual equilibrium. Our contemporary world is made up of this dynamism—an unceasing revel of cause and effect.
Artists: Paula Barr, Sarah Bednarek, Ali Della Bitta, Daniel John Gadd, Brece Honeycutt, Ellen Letcher, Trevor King, Elizabeth Murray, Judy Pfaff, Wade Schaming, Christopher Vazquez, Greg Wall
Curator Jason Andrew writes, during the 1970’s, Paula Barr (b. 1945, Philadelphia, PA; raised in Mobile, AL) sought a more engaging experience beyond the rigid, static canvas hanging on a wall. Working in a former sewing factory on Berry Street in Williamsburg, with her neighbor Martin Puryear downstairs, Barr began to lean her stretched canvas panels against the wall and then stacked another on top.
“The Leaner Series: Pyrad,” 1974, was among the first works to be realized and was recognized and exhibited by Klaus Kertess at Bykert Gallery. As with each canvas in this series, Barr sought to traverse the large area of the canvas with paint in one commanding and empowering brush stroke.
In 1985, with the birth of her son, Barr broadened her palette to include photography and alternative media. As an early practitioner of Cibachrome, she became an innovator in creating site-specific public art installations that melded photography and glass tiles. Her subsequent exploration of architecture, particularly the panoramic views of bridges and skyscrapers of Manhattan, resulted in Barr creating some of the most iconic photographs of New York.

Herstories: Womyn Creators in Comix & Graphic Novels
Wednesday May 3, 2023, 7:00pm—8:30pm
CUNY Graduate Center, 8th Floor, Dining Commons
365 Fifth Avenue New York NY 10016 (@35th Street)
What does it mean to be a woman working in comics?
Three comic book creators will offer their unique and personal perspectives through a discussion of their far-ranging work spanning politics, activism, personal stories, biography, and memoir in their published narratives over the past decades.
Comic book and Graphic Novel Writer-artist-creators, (and editors!) Jennifer Camper, Sara Gómez Woolley, and Sabrina Jones will give CUNY a look at their worlds in the comics medium in a special presentation that will survey their extensive published work as well as what they are currently developing.
Presenters bios:
Jennifer Camper’s comics are often dark stories with sly humor and they give voice to outsiders. Her work examines life from a perspective that is irreverent, female, queer, and mongrel (Lebanese American). She often explores gender, race, class, and politics, as well as sexuality, mermaids, and robots. She’s also a cartoon editor, a teacher, and the creator of three Queers & Comics Conferences.
Her books include Rude Girls and Dangerous Women, a collection of her cartoons, and subGURLZ, a graphic novella following the adventures of three women living in abandoned subway tunnels. She also edited two Juicy Mother comics anthologies. Her cartoons and illustrations have appeared in numerous publications, and have been exhibited internationally.
The film documentary No Straight Lines, the Rise of Queer Comics, features cartoonists Jenifer Camper, Alison Bechdel, Howard Cruse, Ruppert Kinnard and Mary Wings.
Sara Gómez Woolley’s work has been recognized by the New York Society of Illustrators, the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, and 3×3 Magazine of Contemporary Illustration. She has worked on a variety of exciting projects for clients including National Geographic, DC Comics, Image Comics, Scholastic, Random House, Parallax Press, For Beginners Books, and the New Castle Science Convention UK. Sara’s ongoing personal project, a fictionalized graphic memoir written collaboratively with her mother and art partner Leila Gómez Woolley, Los Pirineos the mostly true memoirs of Esperancita Gómez, was singled out for award by the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, the largest Latino arts organization in the US.
Sara is current faculty of the Communications Design Department at New York City College of Technology, CUNY.
Sabrina Jones is a cartoonist, writer, editor, and scenic artist, who began her career with activist art collective Carnival Knowledge and alternative comics World War 3 illustrated and Girltalk. Her books Race to Incarcerate: A Graphic Retelling (with Marc Mauer) and Isadora Duncan: A Graphic Biography were both named “Great Graphic Novels” by the Young Adult Library Services Association. Jones created comics for Wobblies!, The Real Costs of Prisons, FDR and the New Deal for Beginners, Yiddishkeit, Radical Jesus, and Our Lady of Birth Control: A Cartoonist’s Encounter with Margaret Sanger. She received a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute and an MFA in illustration from School of Visual Arts. Her scenic work can be seen every weekend on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Sabrina just completed editing the forthcoming (June) 53rd issue of World War 3 illustrated, “My Body/Our Rights!”

30. Siah Armajani, Petah Coyne, Elizabeth Murray, Afredo Jaar, Sol LeWitt, FF Alumns, at Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY, thru Aug. 6
Following the incredible donation of works of contemporary art from the collection of Alfred and Mary Shands to the @speedartmuseum, the group exhibition “Rounding the Circle: The Mary and Al Shands Collection” is now on view.
“It was Al Shands’s wish that the contemporary art collection he and his late wife, Mary, amassed at their Great Meadows estate in Crestwood, Kentucky be displayed together in a public exhibition before being dispersed to museums across the state. In this way, he sought not only a closure to the collection’s life at Great Meadows, but also a bridge to the works’ future lives in other contexts.”
“Rounding the Circle: The Mary and Al Shands Collection” is on view from March 24th – August 6, 2023 at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.
