Laure Drogoul’s “The Nipple Project” combines installation and a half-hour performance with a conversation between the artist, the live audience, and Franklin Furnace’s Founding Director Martha Wilson. Recorded in June, 1999 this 30-minute documentary covers “The Nipple Project” from its conception after Drogoul was diagnosed with breast cancer, and publicizes the typically very personal and private process of breast reconstruction and areolar tattoos, culminating in an examination of the complex relationship between nature and technology. The performance aspect invited viewer participation via a Live Call In number and areolar design submissions and a Nipple Library was created. 3. David Hammons, FF Alumn, at The Drawing Center, thru May 23
The Drawing Center is delighted to announce that David Hammons has expanded the ongoing exhibition David Hammons: Body Prints, 1968–1979 by adding six body prints from his personal collection, including a new work from 2021 that features a specter-like figure wearing a face mask. This will mark the first time that these body prints have been exhibited publicly.
“One of the thrills of curating is when artists reach out to comment upon or participate in exhibitions of their historical work,” said Laura Hoptman, The Drawing Center’s Executive Director. “This is exactly what David Hammons has done by adding these rarely-seen works to our already rich display of his body print series. I encourage those who have seen the exhibition and were moved by it, to return to The Drawing Center and see how Hammons’s intervention has expanded the show and broadened our knowledge of this pivotal period in his career.”
To mark the occasion, The Drawing Center will offer extended viewing hours from 6–8pm on the evening of Friday, April 23. Visitors are required to make a free, timed-entry reservation ahead of their visit to The Drawing Center.
The works will be on view beginning Friday, April 16, and will remain on view through May 23.
A second edition of the publication David Hammons: Body Prints, 1968–1979 will be released in May of 2021, and will include images of the six body prints that Hammons added to the installation and a revised introduction by Laura Hoptman.

In conjunction with 1981-2021, the ongoing two-person exhibition featuring the paintings of Brooklyn-based artist Aaron Gilbert and the late Chinese-American painter Martin Wong, P·P·O·W is pleased to present a virtual panel discussion between Gilbert; American graffiti artist and friend of Martin Wong, Chris Daze Ellis; and scholar, writer, and curator Rich Blint.
Spanning over 40 years, 1981-2021 focuses on two artists whose practices amplify the societal pressures of both their private lives and the New York communities they inhabit. As Blint writes in the accompanying catalogue essay, “Wong and Gilbert “worry the line” in their subversion of received expectations concerning figuration and abstraction by centering the imaginative and metaphysical, which requires us to linger and trace the outlines of populations we try so desperately not to see given our accidental and momentary avoidance of a similar circumstance.” Furthering the intergenerational dialogue established in 1981-2021, this digital discussion will explore each artists’ approach to chronicling a continuum of life within a city under siege
Aaron Gilbert
Aaron Gilbert (b. 1979) was born in Pennsylvania and lives and works in New York, NY. Gilbert received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. He is a 2015 Louis Comfort Tiffany Award recipient and was awarded the “Young American Painter of Distinction” by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2010. Gilbert has exhibited paintings at Lyles and King, Deitch Projects, and Lulu Mexico City. Residencies include 2013 Fountainhead Residency, 2012 Yaddo, 2008 LMCC Workspace Residency as well as the 2008 Affiliate Fellowship of the American Academy in Rome. His work is currently in the permanent collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Chris Daze Ellis
Chris Daze Ellis (b. 1962) began his prolific Career painting New York City subway cars in 1976 while attending The High School of Art and Design. He remains one of the few artists of his generation to make the successful transition from the subways to the studio. Since then, he has had numerous solo exhibitions including at museums and galleries such as Palais du Lichtenstein, Feldkirch, Austria, Musee d’art Moderne, Nice, France, 1999, Galleria del Palazzo, Florence, Italy, Fortune Cookie Projects, Singapore, The Museum of the City of New York, New York, and P·P·O·W, New York. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Museum of the city of New York, The Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Yale University art Gallery, New Haven, Addison Museum of American Art at the Phillips Academy, Andover.
Rich Blint
Rich Blint is a scholar, writer, and curator. He is assistant professor of Literature in the Department of Literary Studies, director of the Program in Race and Ethnicity, and affiliate faculty in Gender Studies. He is co-editor of a special issue of African American Review on James Baldwin, wrote the introduction and notes for the eBook Baldwin for Our Times: Writings from James Baldwin for a Time of Sorrow and Struggle, and served as Guest Critic for the October 2016 issue of The Brooklyn Rail on James Baldwin. Upcoming books include A Radical Interiority: James Baldwin and the Personified Self in Modern American Culture, and A Queer Spirit: Incidents in the Life of the Americas. He is also editor of the forthcoming Cambridge volume African American Literature in Transition, 1980-1990, and Approaches to Teaching the Works of James Baldwin, currently under preparation for the Modern Language Association. His writing has appeared in African American Review, James Baldwin Review, Anthropology Now, The Believer, McSweeney’s, The Brooklyn Rail, sx visualities, and the A-Line: a journal of progressive thought where he serves as editor-at-large. Curatorial projects include Renee Cox: Revisiting The Queen Nanny of the Maroons Series, Columbia University, The Devil Finds Work: James Baldwin on Film, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, The First Sweet Music, The John and June Alcott Gallery, Hanes Art Center, and Bigger Than Shadows, DODGEgallery, New York. Rich was the 2016-2017 Scholar-in-Residence in the MFA Program in Performance and Performance Studies at Pratt Institute, and a 2017-2018 Visiting Scholar at the Center for Experimental Humanities at New York University. He has received fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon and Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship foundations.

Hi Friends,
My artist sister from another mister, Rachelle Dang and I are happy to announce our upcoming two-person exhibition at Five Myles. The opening reception is Thursday, April 29, 6-8pm. However the work is on view from Saturday, April 24. This project was supported, in part, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant.
FiveMyles is in part supported by the New York State Council for the Arts, Public Funds from the New York City Dept. of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation, Humanities NY, and the Perlmeter Foundation.

7. Phyllis Bulkin Lehrer, FF Alumn, at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, thru May 8
“Inside/Out” is a Lehrer’s installation of art pieces inspired by the environment of Sullivan County. They consist of 2-D three screen and constructed shaped canvases with adhered paper works. Site-specific renderings (environmental portraits) are inserted into abstract configurations. The resulting images combine the imagined with the observed, producing a right/left brain mesh or a mind/body sense of place.
“Art has the potential to take the observer away from their usual self conscious frame of reference and illuminate the perspective so that they see themselves in relationship to the world around them from a more holistic and universally inclusive point of view. If I can in a small way seek to foster this potential, then as an artist I have done my job,” Lehrer says.
Phyllis Bulkin Lehrer is a New York City-based painter/animator/media artist who produces still and moving images that encompass a myriad of methods. Her body of work in painting and performance art inform her practice. Her moving and still art works have been represented in international galleries, venues, and festivals.

IMPERFECT PERFECT:
The Trilogy
Dear ALL,
Spring is upon us and with the help of vaccinations, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.
A few months ago, when the pandemic was just starting to take hold, I decided to open my studio in order to contribute as an artist to this dire situation by creating a communicative interactive video project “Imperfect Perfect”.
The concept was that anyone with or without any set skills could join into an adventure of improvisation, making storyboards with watercolors.
With my guidance and Ruby’s wicked sense of humor, it was for you the audience to get involved and have fun, using watercolors to explore.
It was certainly pure enjoyment and play in creating this project. Now, we are concluding “Imperfect Perfect ” with one final episode featuring more behaving badly but painting well with Ruby and her friends. The animated segment should give you an idea that this could continue–that remains a future possibility.
This TRILOGY can be experienced in full again if you will view it in the order it was made. You can also just watch our newest installment, The Finale.
Enjoy it and create your storyboards. Don’t forget: Imperfect could be fun, could be Perfect.
The Studio Update will continue with glimpses into what is going on in the studio.

EFA North Fork Resident Judy Giera [she/her] is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, performance, video, and costume. During her time at EFA’s North Fork Residency, Giera plans to continue work on her on-going series ‘The Extraterrestrigurl Suite’. This body of work utilizes assemblage based abstract paintings to cement a material vocabulary for a series of video works where the artist transforms into an alien drag queen, an impossibly ridiculous and othered creature which serves as an ultimate allegory for Giera’s own transgender body. Through the symbiotic combination of paintings and videos, with paintings often appearing within the video works as sets and props, Giera attacks how pleasure and potential are limited and capped for transgender bodies and creates in reaction a bright and haptic body of work expressing the joy and ejaculatory revelry of transition, discovery, self-pleasure, and gender euphoria.

This new channel features readings of books, essays, writings and rants by Frank Moore.
Frank Moore was an American performance artist, shaman, teacher, poet, essayist, painter, musician, and internet/television personality who experimented in art, performance, ritual, and shamanistic teaching from the late 1960s until his death in 2013 in Berkeley, California.
Moore was born with cerebral palsy, could not walk or talk. Moore communicated using a laser-pointer and a board of letters, numbers, and commonly used words and typed with a head pointer.

Originally a lecture Frank Moore presented at N.Y.U. in 1990, “Art of a Shaman” explores performance and art in general terms as being a magical way to effect change in the world. Using concepts from modern physics, mythology and psychology, Moore looks at performance as an art of melting action, of ritualistic shamanistic doings/playings. By using his career and life as a “baseline”, he explores this dynamic playing within the context of reality shaping.

Nadene Milne Gallery is at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.
It was once said that ‘Eighty year old artists don’t retire ~ they reign’. At eighty six years old, looking fit as a fiddle and standing in front of an incredible new work, this photo of the irrepressibly creative #maxgimblett is a case in point.
A dozen or so thoughtfully selected works will be shown @the_nmg upcoming 40 year survey show of Max Gimblett’s practice.
The exhibition will be formally opened with a talk given by Jenny Harper, the former Director of the Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetu.
