Verónica Peña at Des_Ilusiones: Arte, Ciecnia y Tecnología

Exhibition: February 23 – May 6, 2023

Opening Reception: March 1, 8:00pm

Performance “The Body In The Substance” by Verónica Peña: March 11, 7:00pm

Est_Art Gallery, Madrid Art Week, Madrid, Spain

The exhibition Des_Ilusiones: Arte, Ciecnia y Tecnología is an immersive and sensorial experience through art, science, and technology to reflect on notions of humanity and our future. Des_Ilusiones comprises the work of invited artists Nourathar, Tondosmiling, Miguel Mas, Fran Pérez Rus, Noé Serrano, Moon Armada, and Verónica Peña to transdisciplinarily question the type of beings we are becoming.

As part of the exhibition, alumna Verónica Peña shows, for the first time publicly, a selection of experiments, artifacts, and constructed objects resulting from her long-term performance project “The Body In The Substance”, which the artist will perform on March 11.

“Peña’s work explores absence, separation, and the search for harmony through Performance Art. Her performance installations combine underwater

submersion and processes of visual metamorphosis to discuss global topics and alternative presents. In her piece, “The Body in the Substance”, the artist fully immerses herself in a liquid progressively altered towards coagulation. During the performance, attendees witness a process of visual metamorphosis of the human body immersed in its search for stillness and unity. The immersion is accompanied by a sound that inundates the gallery space, creating an immersive audiovisual experience in which each breath becomes: a discovery of the unknown, an act of hope, a balm for the pain…” (Translated from Des_Ilusiones catalog, 2023.)

“Reshaping the Sugar” at White Box curated by Yohanna Roa.

For more info: https://whiteboxnyc.org/2023/exhibitions/re_shaping_the_sugar_curated_by_yohannamroa/

The first translation of the word Caribbean into a European language dates back to 1492, found in the journals of Christopher Columbus. From his gaze facing the incomprehension of a culture alien to his, having a completely different perspective of the world, Columbus mistakenly decided to name cannibals all inhabitants of the lands we now call The Lesser Antilles. The process of creating the Caribbean is confusing and contradictory and full of contrasts subject to the geopolitical changes that have occurred over the last 500 years. Within the framework of Black History Month, WhiteBox Presents “Re-shaping the Sugar”, an exhibition that investigates the Afro-Latin roots present in the memory of ‘Black America’. The show includes the work of seven relevant Caribbean artists based in New York City, Juana Valdes, Coco Fusco,  Alicia Grullón, Renluka Maharaj, Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, Joiri Minaya and Jacqueline Herranz-Brooks. Their exhibited works challenge the historical, geographical, and political delimitations of what we call the “Caribbean”.

The Woods Women and Other Works Part Two

On view by appointment through March 31, 2023

Birthing a New Sky

From the Archives of Earth

The Woods Woman Mythology, Creation Myth no. 2754

The Use of North American Medicinal Plants

Before she gives birth she becomes contemplative. Birthing is a lonely task, requiring all of her concentration. She brews sassafras tea, then adds cannabis to relax her nerves and a bit of strawberry for sweetness–a concoction to dissolve consciousness.

For a new sky to be born she must split herself into a million pieces. Each cell in her body replicates itself, spinning in twirling orbits. Her atomized insides burst apart, cascading into the void around her. Swirling and churning, one cell makes its way back to her center, where her heart had been. This brave new life expands, forcing its way out as new light, new land – a new sky.

Saya Woolfalk

Saya Woolfalk creates works of art that combine elements of her African American, Japanese, and European heritage, with allusions to anthropology, feminist theory, science fiction, and Eastern religions. During the past decade, in numerous multimedia exhibitions, installations, performances, and screenings, she has created the story of the Empathics, a community of female plant-human hybrids who possess extraordinary abilities to understand the feelings, desires, and motivations of others.

Our newest presentation of works by the artist features intricately pieced collages created for Field Notes From the Empathic Universe, her recent solo exhibition at the Newark Museum of Art in which she introduced The Woods Women, a secret society predating her Empathic Universe.

Among the works are on view are four multicolored landscapes, inspired by the artist’s study of the Hudson River School collection at the Newark Museum where she was artist-in-residence in 2019. In these works, Birthing a New Sky: Manuscripts 3, 4, 5, and 6, she reimagines the earth and sky, addressing the “speculative fiction” of the idealized nineteenth century American landscape tradition.

The artist’s newest multimedia installation, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum in Philadelphia,  will be on view there in Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America (March 3 – October 8, 2023).

Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects is located in Suite 411 on the fourth floor at 401 Broadway, on the northwest corner of Broadway and Walker Streets in Tribeca. To view the exhibition, please contact us at info@tonkonow.com

16. Elana Katz, FF Alumn, with Museum of Berlin-Karlshorst, Germany, opening April 14 and more

Dear friends,

I’m pleased to announce the next HEW exhibition opening on April 14th – it will take place in a historic building which was formerly a prison operated by the KGB during the DDR period, located in Berlin-Karlshorst.

The building is currently home to the Katholische Hochschule für Sozialwesen, however the underground level, where the prison was located, has been used only for storage and had little to no visibility in recent years.

I’m pleased to be co-curating a group exhibition in these historic rooms, with my colleague and dear friend Dario Srbić. Through site-specific work, HEW artists will reactive this complex space of historical social trauma.

This project is an ambitious undertaking and it requires resources — so for the first time in 10 years — I have decided to fundraise via a crowdfunding campaign. Fingers crossed we raise the funds to make this project possible!

At this link please find our HEW crowdfunding campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/exit-is-no-object-exhibition-by-hew-berlin

Or, it is alternatively possible to make a tax-deductible donation! These donations must be made to gallery KWADRAT, and we will provide all the necessary paperwork for your tax-deduction purposes. Please contact studioelanakatz@gmail.com for more info.

I hope you will consider a contribution to this meaningful project – every little bit helps.

Soon you will receive an exhibition invitation. The opening reception on April 14th will be hosted by the Museum of Berlin-Karlshorst (just a short walk from the former prison). As always, this HEW project is realized with the dedicated support of KWADRAT Berlin.

Many thanks for your support!

Warmly,

Elana

Evelyn Franti in The Theatrical Premiere Of Beth B’s new film Glowing Evelyn

Little Annie in The Theatrical Premiere Of Beth B’s new film Glowing Annie

Sex, Power, & Money: Films By Beth B runs from March 10 to March 13 in theater

2022 Guggenheim Fellowship and MoMA Film Retrospective recipient, Beth B made an immediate and meteoric impact on the New York City’s art scene after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 1977, producing Super 8 films that invented a cinematic analog to the No Wave avant-garde in music. Her uncompromising innovative work as a solo artist has accelerated and expanded through time, as is proven by this cross-section of her extraordinarily prolific career to date, which includes her two provocative narrative features, Salvation! (1987) and Two Small Bodies (1993); a selection of her sui generis documentary feature films; and several short films—like Thanatopsis (1991), one of several collaborations with Lydia Lunch—that bring together aspects of fiction and non-fiction. A long-overdue Downtown showcase for a true Downtown legend.

Titles playing in theater at Metrograph include Exposed, High Heel Nights (with Keith Levy and Michael Gorski), Glowing Annie, Lydia Lunch: The War Is Never Over, Salvation! Have You Said Your Prayers Today? and Two Small Bodies (starring Fred Ward and Suzy Amis). Titles playing exclusively on Metrograph At Home include Amnesia, Belladonna, Breathe In, Breathe Out, Glowing Evelyn, Out of Sight/Out of Mind, and Thanatopsis. Black Box (Dir: Beth B & Scott B) and The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight will be available both in theater and online.

Frebruoary Update

What’s up doc, it’s me, Laura. Tonight I feel wild.  JK I don’t go to therapy, JK course i fucking do, and I have been watching Twin Peaks again for the jillionth time.  I have been traveling and it’s comforting to be with those familiar stylish ghosts.  I have been thinking about narrative a lot as well because I working on this new show – it’s got many twists and turds and it’s hard to discern what little signs to follow and what is a diversion, an ego driven joke or a statement, which I am sorely against – all statements in narrative are a mistake!

Now that I have stated that, I will also state the best guidance I have received creatively would be to follow my instincts.  The first time I really heard this and listened to it at the same time was when I was working on a show and I had this big desire to inhabit a bear, but I couldn’t figure out why.  The bear didn’t fit into the story.  A much seasoned theater mentor told me to not question it and just, “be the bear” – I know this sounds suspiciously l like “be the flame, not the moth” or “be the change you want to see”… and it is I gwess.

What I took this to mean was follow the sign, the curiosity, the image and figure out the why later.  She also told me that the why is in the desire already, and it’s hidden.  Maybe deeply, maybe just below the surface.  Scratch n sniff and it will reveal itself during the process. The important thing is to explore the buzzing call.

David Lynch famously said that Blue Velvet all started with a very clear image of a severed ear laying in a field.  My severed ear right now is bananas.  The fruit. There are a few bananas in my story already, some work, some do not.  And I know there are more things to say with them.  They are trying to tell me something, and bananas, they sure have a lot to say.

For starters, they look like a dong. But that is the obvious child of banana symbolism.  Still funny though!  Banana peels are like trash from central casting – always in a cartoon pile along with egg shells and coffee grounds.  They are what the bride takes a ride on in the wedding march of 3rd grade.  So silly, so harmless and slimy.  Bananas are symbolic of deep violence and colonization.  “Banana Republic” is a real and terrible thing and is such a fucked up name for a clothing line, especially one that makes safari light clothes and mid-level resort wear. Bananas are the tropically extractive 1950’s.  Vacation from hard work being american!  Carmen Miranda’s hat.  I used to love to sing the jingle for Chiquita bananas when I was a kid.  Rhyming equator with refig-er-a-tor.  Bliss!  But that also makes me want to weep with dispair at the simple horrors implied right there in the song – Chiquita is proclaiming to the world that these perky dick shaped wonderfruits DO NOT belong in your post war refrigerators ladies!  The are meant to be somewheres else.  They speak of titans of industry, of slave labor, of revolution even (see United Fruit Company strike).  They also speak of the mental craziness.  The big insanity.  It’s bananas, so it is.  They also speak as a telephone you to speak into.  Be the banana you want to see in the world my friends.

I have some very fun little celebrity appearances coming up, I hope to see you at one of these exclusive lozenge-ellees events.

In solidarity, Dynasty Handbag, Satin Worshipper
