Zamharir (torture for the naked eyes) is a mixed-media body of work by Iranian artist Nima Nikakhlagh that invites the viewer to sit with the scenes where the eyes turn red from political violence.

Violence and melancholy permeate the experience of his work. Nima Nikakhlagh, who arrived in the United States from Iran in 2014, is a multidisciplinary artist working across mediums, such as performance art, photography, video, and poetry. Nima’s practice concerns itself with socio-political power dynamics and political resistance approached in a poetic manner. Most of his works are performance-based, and he perceives performance art as not only a form of visual art, but much more, a social-political art form and a social-political art practice. His work frequently uses situation orchestration and some provocation—interruption of daily life—as mechanisms of audience internalization of his concepts – the real action takes place within the consciousness of the viewer. In his words, “the togetherness that performance art establishes is something truly necessary.” Nima’s works have appeared/been performed in Iran, Europe, Canada, and the United States. He has published two literary-performative books: “Bodies, Languages, Truths” and “This Is Not a Book.” Nima is a recipient of the Franklin Furnace FUND for the Performance Art 2023-24 Award.

Opening Feb 7 @ National Liberty Museum

Word Powered: Exploring Free Speech Through Art is a juried exhibition that examines the dynamic relationship between censorship, freedom of expression, and diverse perspectives. Bringing together a range of voices, mediums, and subject matter, the exhibition challenges visitors to reflect on their role in safeguarding our right to free speech, and better understand how language can be manipulated, suppressed, or celebrated. The works on display invite audiences across the political and cultural divide to engage with the potency of words, demonstrating how art can spark vital conversations, and illuminate our collective voice.

The artists for Word Powered were selected from a national call by a panel of jurists that included: Chenoa Baker, independent curator; Talia Barnes, Multimedia Designer at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE); Fisher Derderian, Founder and Executive Director of the Roger Scruton Legacy Foundation; and Danielle Marino, Director of Programming at First Person Arts.

11. Pamela Enz, FF Alumn, at Theatre for the New City, Manhattan, Feb. 11

‘how easy it would have been to be alive for love’

Theater for the New City Theater Crystal Field, presents

“Afterwards” by Pamela Enz – directed by Sarah T. Schwab*

Feb. 11th 7pm – libation and conversation to follow

with: Austin Pendleton – Marlon Xavier – Heather Littler – Annette Fox  –  Elizabeth Yeoman – Juanita Casto-Ochoa & Kim Savarino

“Afterwards” is based on the true story of Françoise Dorléac, Catherine Deneuve’s older sister who burned to death in a car crash following an argument with her boyfriend who’d stormed away only to hear shortly after that she had died.

Her lover was the son of Sam Shaw, famous for his subway shot of Marilyn and esteemed Cassavetes producer, whose lawsuit of biblical proportions with his only son evolves into a blueprint for forgiveness that gives the piece its resonant heart.

Using information freely shared in real time and spiritually imparted Enz’s Afterwards considers the generations of suffering these people’s stories hold along with the sanctifying power of their mythic love.

Inspired by Edward Snowden’s BitCoin2024 address, itself a yowling howl of a reaction to an increasingly technological world we’ve little power to decide how much we might want to be subsumed by Afterwards ends with a plea for kindness.

*Pamela is especially thrilled to be working with Ms. Schwab who creates stories for both film and onstage celebrating compassion and community.

Like the whole of Ms. Enz’s recent work particularly the film AIRTIME co-written with Alexandra Guerineaud Afterwards posits the importance of a resurgence of empathy,

12. Jacki Apple Fund, FF Alumn, fire relief efforts, Los Angeles

In light of the disastrous fires and their aftermath, the Jacki Apple Fund has made grants to both Grief & Hope (sponsored by The Brick) and to LACE, both Los Angeles based organizations, to assist artists impacted by the recent fires in Los Angeles. As a longtime resident of LA, and a committed voice for preservation of the natural world, Jacki would have been horrified at the personal and environmental destruction wrought by these fires. Our efforts are to help those who lost homes, studios, and livelihoods, and we urge others to contribute as well.

More on Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910–1930

Featuring over 90 artworks in the museum’s iconic rotunda, this major exhibition examines the vibrant abstract art of Orphism. It explores the transnational movement’s developments in Paris, addressing the impact dance, music, and poetry had on the art, among other themes.

Orphism emerged in the early 1910s, when the innovations brought about by modern life were radically altering conceptions of time and space. Artists connected to Orphism engaged with ideas of simultaneity in kaleidoscopic compositions, investigating the transformative possibilities of color, form, and motion. Selected works by artists including Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, Marcel Duchamp, Mainie Jellett, František Kupka, Francis Picabia, and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, and by the Synchromists Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell, are on view.

Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910–1930 is organized by Tracey Bashkoff, Senior Director of Collections and Senior Curator, and Vivien Greene, Senior Curator, 19th- and Early 20th-Century Art, with the support of Bellara Huang, Curatorial Assistant, Exhibitions.
