Merging spoken word and acoustic punk rock raconteur styles, this work-in-progress explores the impact of opium on the Chinese Diaspora as well as NYC’s punk/counterculture world through the dual prisms of William S. Burroughs’ character, “Johnny Yen”–immortalized in Iggy Pop and David Bowie’s song, “Lust For Life”–and my own Grandfather’s opium overdose on the streets of NYC’s Chinatown….with Special Guests for each performance

2. Paula Barr, FF Alumn, at Anthology Film Archives, Manhattan, Feb. 8
I am in Mark Rappaport’s film CASUAL RELATIONS which is showing at the Anthology Film Archives. It was Mark’s first feature film. My scenes were shot in my AIR loft at 210 Centre Street. Mark also lived in the building in 1973.
CASUAL RELATIONS
1973, 80 min, 16mm-to-digital
which is showing at the Anthology Film Archives
32 Second Ave, NYC
Sat, Feb 8 at 5:00 and Fri, Feb 14 at 8:45.
“Mark Rappaport’s first feature, made in 1973, has a title resembling that of Manuel DeLanda’s INCONTINENCE: A DIARRHETIC FLOW OF MISMATCHES insofar as it points to formal as well as sexual relationships. In fact, CASUAL RELATIONS bears a distinct relationship to such films as Godard’s 1 + 1 and Makavejev’s WR: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM of the same period, which link together widely different chunks of material almost like beads on a string. Rappaport’s example in this genre can be seen as a culmination and summation of his nine preceding shorts, all made between 1966 and 1971. Divided into chapters, CASUAL RELATIONS casually relates love and vampire movies, sound and image, style and obsession, and makes an excellent introduction to Rappaport’s glamorously home-made art cinema.” -Jonathan Rosenbaum

ancora oggi in continuo sviluppo.

The Do-Mystics: Arantxa Araujo and Monique Blom in two articles published by The Humanities Council at Princeton University: BEING HUMAN: Reflections on Belonging(s) in Movement
https://humanities.princeton.edu/2020/01/30/being-human-reflections-on-belongings-in-movement/
“The opening performance by the Do-Mystics was in many ways responding to the 2005 letter in the Princeton Alumni Weekly magazine by Gisela Kam, a cataloguer at Firestone Library, titled “A Soulless Place,” which describes how East Pyne’s courtyard was built over a garden, uprooting its poplars, ferns and various inhabitants. The performance, which took place in the same courtyard, brought garlands of foraged stinging nettle among other leaves and vines, an homage to what was once rooted there. The performance itself-as Monique Blom and Arantxa Araujo became silent, moving statues that occupied the courtyard-answered the question: What does it take to stop, slow, interrupt and disrupt the circulation of bodies and the speed of productivity at Princeton? A group of people gathered and witnessed, a pensive and active silence blanketing the space. A runner crossing the courtyard stopped, pulled out his headphones and sat on a bench to watch the performance, and stood up to intervene in a staged tug-of-war between the two performers. At its end, the performers prompted a collective lead-in to the building, as witnesses stirred the dust (literally, dispersed by the performers), activating the “soulless place.” This palimpsestic intervention breathed life into the “dead stone” of this settlement and opened into readings that meditated on the living present and presence of colonial legacies, and on life that grows through their cracks”.

“In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans.” – Kahlil Gibran
The current series of monotypes by Suzanne Stokes explores water as substance, metaphoric allusion, and forms a collective narrative that addresses mankind’s complicated relationship to this essential natural resource. Through the divergent lenses of micro and macro perspectives, she examines the nature of existence and its relationship to water on physical and metaphysical planes. Water means life. We are in a time period of our environmental history where the human race must fully embrace and embody this fact. Earth is the only known planet in this universe that has water and life. Water is the lifeblood of our bodies, our economy, our nation and our well-being. The integration and interaction of the figures with water, in the monotypes, looks at how the interplay of relationships, spiritualism, and stewardship of the earth shapes our modern world.
A variety of printmaking, papermaking and embossing techniques are combined with the press to print monotypes made from a series of layered vellum stencils and natural materials. The monotypes are embossed with a wide variety of plants from the Hudson Valley’s local forests and Maine’s mid-coast Atlantic Ocean.
