Tish Benson is a cyberjunkie and experimental visual artist. The cyberjunkie is a confession of sorts- not having a website nor any mathematical proof of a following that relies on her truth to balance out the shenanigans known as “LIFE IS A MYSTERY” she can only deem the phone cling to her palms and “vital scans” of her instagram as some sort of weird addiction made sane only because of The Quaratine Pandemic. The experimental artist part is also a matter of opinion- or so it seems to be. Although in days gone by she has received a few honors and awards but lately she wonders how could those long ago accolades have turned into the strange Auditionings folks seem to put on for her without due cause. At any rate, Tish Benson is grateful for this Franklin Furnace opportunity to exist beyond her own imagination.

S/A. Exhibitions presents Soldadera, a multi-media exhibition that marks artist Nao Bustamante’s Orange County debut. With the assistance of Project Director, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Soldadera premiered in 2015 at the Vincent Price Art Museum in Los Angeles. Since then the work has traveled to upstate New York, Marfa, Mexico City, San Diego, San Francisco and now Orange County. Santa Ana stands as the face of a new California. Latinos have more influence in everyday life — electorally, culturally and demographically — than almost anywhere else in the country. A Mexican American Mayor, a Latin American majority serving on the City Council and a population that is 77% Latin American. What better place than Santa Ana to bring this work exploring one of the most important revolutions of the 20th century? Soldadera presents a variety of artworks inspired by the women who fought during the Mexican Revolution (1910-20). The exhibition opens on January 21st and continues through March 28th. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, January 21, 2021, from 4-10 pm and is free to all, who reserve via email, swys.projects@gmail.com.
This exhibition is a creative engagement with soldaderas (Spanish for “female soldiers”) as imagined figures, and as actual women with their own histories. Today, we know the soldadera through a romantic tradition that idealizes her. In this exhibition, Bustamante deploys a methodology she calls “speculative re-enactment.” She asks: How can we reach across time to know the soldadera’s experience of the past? How do we bring her into the here and now, to experience her future?
The artist’s search for the soldadera’s wisdom culminated in a unique pilgrimage: Bustamante traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico, to meet 127-year-old Soldadera Leandra Becerra Lumbreras, the last survivor of the Mexican Revolution, and notably the oldest person in the world at the time. Their transformative meeting inspired work that will be featured in this exhibition. Señora Becerra, at times referred to as La Abuela del Mundo, passed over to the next life on March 19, 2015. We continue to mourn her loss and are grateful for her contributions to the Soldadera project.
Bustamante creates hybrid works that hover over the line between fact and fiction, between the past and the future. Bustamante’s period-specific dresses made from Kevlar® add a sculptural element to this exhibition. Kevlar is a modern material used in personal protection products such as combat helmets and ballistic vests. The artist tested one of her fighting costumes with weapons commonly used during the Mexican Revolution. The video, “Test Shoot” will be on display, as well as the “Fighting Costume.

Hi all,
As we end this rather eventful year I wanted to wish you a wonderful Holiday and New Year! May you all be healthy and safe and find comfort in whatever brings you joy.
If you feel like venturing out,( or online) I recommend two museum exhibits that my photographs are featured in: The International Center Of Photography show #ICPConcerned: Global Images for a Global Crisis and New York Responds at the Museum Of the City of New York.
Both of these exhibits show strangers yet trigger personal memories. We are indeed all in this together. These stories have faces. It is in the details, the specificity and individuality behind the numbers counted at the BLM protests, the numbers of the deceased, the numbers of the heroes, our ‘essential workers’ which can be so numbing. The ICP exhibit is extraordinary in that it reminds us that this pandemic is happening all over the world……which feels counter intuitive in our paralyzed quarantine state.
The exhibits capture the scope of these difficult times and preserves the feeling of community. Something that we are all made better for remembering.

Figures brings together artists Rajkamal Kahlon, Joiri Minaya, and Betty Tompkins in conversation about their works currently on view in our exhibition To Cast Too Bold A Shadow. Each artist uses appropriated historical source materials with particular intent: Kahlon’s paintings are based on 19th Century anthropological illustrations of colonized women; Minaya draws from art history and images of exploitation on the internet; and Tompkins calls out misogyny, gender disparity, and predatory behavior through her repurposing of old master paintings. The conversation will be moderated by Rubin Foundation Executive and Artistic Director Sara Reisman.

Since the 1970s, Amy Sillman—a beloved and key figure of the New York art scene—has developed a singular body of work that includes large-scale gestural paintings blending abstraction with representation, as well as zines and iPad animations.
Over the past decade, Sillman has also produced stimulating essays on the practice of art or the work of other artists: for example, reevaluating the work of the abstract expressionists with a queer eye; elaborating on the role of awkwardness and the body in the artistic process; and discussing the role and meanings of color and shape in depth. Featuring a foreword by Lynne Tillman, Faux Pas is the first book to gather a significant selection of Sillman’s essays, reviews, and lectures, accompanied by drawings, most of which were made specially for the book.
Faux Pas aims at revealing the coherence and originality of Sillman’s reflection as she addresses the possibilities of art today—favoring excess over good taste, wrestling over dandyism, forms over symbols—with as much critical sense as humor. As Jason Farago notes in the New York Times, “Sillman is in a thin crowd (with, let’s say, Andrea Fraser, Hito Steyerl, Matias Faldbakken, David Salle) of artists who can really write. The evidence is in Faux Pas … her writings display the same good humor and intelligence of her best paintings.”

Johanna Drucker has been making artist’s books for more than four decades. Many of them address feminist themes about language through the use of visual typography. This talk focuses on a number of those books: From A to Z (1977), History of the/my Wor(l)d (1990), Simulant Portrait (1990), Testament of Women (2006), Damaged Spring (2003) and several collaborations with Susan Bee, A Girl’s Life (2002) and Fabulas Feminae (2015). The talk also addresses ways in which the use of visual typography was gendered within the poetry community and where and how visual poetics as a feminist practice have increased in visibility in recent scholarship. I will touch on the work of Amanda Earl in her anthology project, Judith: 25 Women Making Visual Poetry, and her database of over 500 women writers.

‘THE WATER TANK SESSIONS’, curated by Verónica Peña, is a new series of long-distance audio-visual collaborations that invites professional musicians, singers, and sound artists to play while being inspired by the submerged body. For the first enactment of the series, invited sound artist Tara Gladden, and underwater performance artist Verónica Peña, collaborated live from different states of the U.S. Hosted by Grace Exhibition Space, NYC, the artists used an online platform to present the audience with a unique live audio-visual experience that combined respirations and hypnotic sounds with the enchanting vision of the suspended body.
Bbeyond is committed to promoting the practice of performance art and artists in Northern Ireland and further afield. Our aim is to raise people’s consciousness of live/performance art as being integral to the world in and around us, inspiring reflection and enriching lived experience. We host artists of international reputation throughout the performance art world and encourage newer artists to experience performance art practices for themselves. FF Alumn Verónica Peña was one of the top finalists for the NARS Artist Residency Program, her work being one of the strongest among the many high caliber submissions.
Veronica Peña is an interdisciplinary performance artist and independent curator from Spain based in the United States. Her work explores the themes of absence, separation, and the search for harmony through Performance Art. Peña is interested in migration politics, cross-cultural dialogue, peaceful resistance, liberation, and women’s empowerment. She has performed/exhibited around Europe, Asia, and America.
