Weekly Spotlight: Alvin Eng, FF Alumn, now online at https://franklinfurnace.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17325coll1/id/65/rec/43
This Weekly Spotlight features Alvin Eng’s performance “Mao Zedong: Jealous Son (An Abstract Portrait)”, a 35-minute online broadcast from June 12, 1998 through Franklin Furnace at Pseudo Programs. Eng developed the concept and libretto for the humorous piece; Yoav Gal developed the music; visual design and direction is by Melissa Cahill Tonelli, MSB Associates; and audio engineering by Timothy Cramer, Maelstrom Music. Footage of Byung Woo Kim, Gervacio Y. Basa Ong, Jr., Randall Schloss, and Carol To, the opera singers, is layered over a background of film and changing photographs depicting Mao Zedong, the late founder of the Chinese Communist Party, at four different stages: “ Teenage Mao,” “Comrade Mao,” “Chairman Mao,” and “Dead Mao.” More about Alvin Eng at www.AlvinEng.com (Text by Julia Larberg, FF University Intern, 2021)

2. Chun Hua Catherine Dong, FF Alumns, at He Xiangnin Art Museum, Shenzhen, China Chun Hua
Catherine Dong presents their four channel VR installation, “Meet Me Halfway,” at group exhibition, In Working: Women In Art Practice, at He Xiangnin Art Museum, Shenzhen, China, December 29, 2021 – March 27, 2022 The exhibition invites 16 female artists who have lived overseas for a long time or have long been traveling between China and the abroad, to present their art practice till now in a multidimensional way, ranging from video recording, artistic expression to spatial reconstruction. The focus of this year’s exhibition is that, in a history of production going through agriculture, industry and intellect, being productive forces of labor, female artists across the ages have contributed physically, emotionally and intellectually. By investigating their artistic creations, this exhibition takes the public on a journey to rethink the efforts of overseas Chinese women in the new era for social development, cultural exchange and intellectual innovation in the context of globalization.

3. Xinan Ran, Urban Bush Women, FF Alumns, at La Mama, Manhattan, January 8-15
Dear friends, A great musical/performance production CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE will run at La Mama this coming Jan 8-15th. The show includes original songs from Grace Galu Libretto, dance by Urban Bush Women and produced by Baba Israel. I helped out the set design at its final production stage, and I was wonderfully surprised by its music and dance during the rehearsal. I highly recommend this show if you are looking for some good theater this January. regards, Helen (Xinan Ran)
