Founded in 1976 by artist Martha Wilson, Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. (commonly known as FF) is dedicated to the collection and preservation of artists’ books. In celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary in 2026, we are pleased to present a special pre-anniversary exhibition: FF RISING.

This exhibition introduces the groundbreaking activities of Franklin Furnace―still relatively little known in Japan. It focuses on avant-garde and time-based art forms such as artists’ books and performance art, and highlights FF’s global efforts to support emerging artists and archive their ephemeral works.

A live bilingual talk event was held on Tuesday, July 8, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, featuring current FF director Harley Spiller and Tokyo-based art historian Edward Madrid Gómez, a longtime collaborator of FF. They shared stories and insights from FF’s decades-long relationships with Japanese artists.

The video was documented by Neo Tamara.
