Weekly Spotlight: Irina Danilova, FF Alumn, two new films, STOP WAR and more

On Monday, May 9, 2022, Irina Danilova, FF Alumn, made two films at sites in upper Manhattan, each entitled STOP WAR.  The first, 1 minute and 6 seconds long, was filmed by the artist in front of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. The second, a silent film 1 minute and 14 seconds long, was filmed by the artist in front of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Irina , a native of Kharkiv, Ukraine now living in Brooklyn,  reports “with the incessant flashing lights at both locations, and with the police not letting me do much, I edited and completed these videos at home.”

In addition to the films, Irina Danilova has also been creating a War In Ukraine National Flags series.

Choices: A Reproductive Rights Exhibition

This timely and urgent exhibition will address the landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the constitutional right to privacy:

“is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy” Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973)

The Supreme Court’s decision made abortion safer and more accessible at a time when 17 percent of all deaths due to pregnancy and childbirth were the result of illegal abortion.

Avenue 50 Studio presents Choices in light of the recent right wing efforts to overturn the right to abortion.

WALK THE TALK

Skid Row Visionaries

celebrated

Parade   Brass Band   Performance   Visual Art

Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 12 – 4pm

Starts at 12 noon (12:00pm) at the Spring Street Community Garden,

220 S. Spring St. LA 90012

and travels to Gladys / General Jeff Memorial Park,

808 E 6th St. Los Angeles, CA 90021.

Walk the Talk 2022 is the 6th iteration of the Los Angeles Poverty Department’s biennial, peripatetic performance: an on-going chronicle of the accomplishments of Skid Row people and their visionary initiatives. Walk the Talk is a parade with a New Orleans Second line brass band and attendees dancing down the street from one performance site to the next while holding aloft portrait / collages of each honoree designed by Dakari Akil.

Join us as we, Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD), perform scenes honoring organizer and musician Mr. Pancake (at the Spring Street Garden), advocate and poet Suzette Shaw (at the New Genesis Hotel), musician and impresario Unkal Bean (at 5th and San Julian), punk band singer, theater maker and activist Chella Coleman (at 6th and San Julian), singer, music therapist and co- Director of Urban Voices Project Kate Richards-Geller (at the Union Rescue Mission), visual artist, rapper and activist Crushow Herring (at the site of the former Umeya Noodle Factory, where CruShow is designing a mural), cultural organizer and government consultant Alisa Orduña (at the ReFresh Spot), and drummer and healer Ray Lewis (at General Jeff Memorial Park).

This year, Los Angeles Poverty Department is thrilled to have so many valuable partners jumping in to realize this year’s performance / parade, starting with our Skid Row Arts Alliance partners Street Symphony, Urban Voices Choir, Piece by Piece and Creative I. Street Symphony is once again bringing the brass band to keep us dancing down the streets from one performance site to another.  Urban Voices Choir is going be calling us to attention before each LAPD scene. The L.A. Catholic Worker is once again lending us shopping carts to stash and transport our sound system.

Funder credits: Walk The talk is a project of the Los Angeles Poverty Department and our Skid Row History Museum & Archive. This year’s Walk the Talk is made possible in part by grants from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, and The National Endowment for the Arts, The Mike Kelley Foundation, The Kindle Project, LA Arts Recovery Fund, and funding provided by the special interest license plate featuring the image of Snoopy, with permission and support from Peanuts Worldwide (Section 5169 of the Vehicle Code) for the Museum Grant Program under the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.

Panel discussion on the occasion of the launch of

Alan W. Moore, “Art Worker: Doing Time in the NY Artworld”

(Journal of Aesthetics & Protest Press, 2022)

Howl! Happening gallery

6 E 1st St Saturday, May 28 at 7pm

The title of the talk is: “A World in Which…” an allusion to the Zapatista slogan, “A world in which many worlds fit.” (“Un mundo donde quepan muchos mundos”.)

The idea is that the NYC artworld of the ‘70s and ‘80s was far more fluid and changeable, with many more positions for its different actors to inhabit than the artworld of today. The market rules in all spheres of image-making, enforced by super-high valuations of traditional artwork, and global social media and streaming platforms. Confirmed participants: Marc H. Miller, Yasmin Ramirez, Leonard Abrams, Alan W. Moore, Stephen Zacks.

Books will be available; JoAAP order page (ships from Leipzig):

12. Jim Johnson, FF Alumn, at Boulder Public Library, CO, thru June 22

I’m happy to announce that Word Into Art is now on view at the Boulder Public Library .  Word Into Art highlights the versatile and vibrant ways that text and art intertwine. These contemporary artists and writers use language as a powerful visual tool to reflect culture, politics, social justice or simply the beauty of the alphabet on canvas.

Co-curated by Jim Johnson and Jennifer Heath, the exhibition will be open to the public at the Boulder Public Library Main Branch during regular library hours from May 6 – June 22.  Here  are a few examples of what you can expect to see in this unique exhibition of paintings, sculpture, prints, artists’ books, posters and ephemera.  There are a number of examples of concrete poetry, some poetry broadsides and Cartoneras.  There’s even a typewriter where you can compose your own concrete poem, message or story.

The show will close on June 22, with a reception for the artists and viewers from 4:30-6:30 PM.

As Lawrence Weiner once famously said, learn to read art.

Making a Mark: Contemporary Drawings

Portland Art Museum – Portland, OR

May 21 – Nov 20, 2022

I am pleased that my work will be included in Making a Mark.

The exhibition features contemporary works on paper gifted to the Portland Art Museum by noted collectors of drawings Werner H. and Sally Kramarsky.

I knew Wynn Kramarsky at critical moments in my development as an artist.

He mattered to me.

Seeing him seeing my work in the studio was potent.

He was present to it.

Kramarsky sensed that the two small works of mine in this exhibition would be generative. They are remembrances of a studio visit. He understood their significance. They are immediate forerunners of a larger wall work “Hurt,” 1992, as well as a work on paper made the same year. Later he introduced me to the work of Lenore Tawney, whose work he also collected. She was a pioneer in the use of textiles, and he lamented her work’s categorization as craft at that time. It was a particular privilege to see the subtle Agnes Martin and Eva Hesse drawings on his office walls on a regular basis.

In the decades since, I have continued with an expanded concept of drawing as my work continues to hover in the space between two and three dimensions. I have continued, too, with organic materials, hand stitching, letterforms, and textiles. For the last twenty years, industrial wool felt has been my primary material. Some of the larger examples have a tapestry-like presence.
