Knockdown Center and Franklin Furnace are pleased to present the world premiere of My Last American Dollar: Round 1. Tricking and Flipping Coins: Making Dollars Hit; Round 2. Black Angels in the Infield: Dripping Faggot Sweat; Round 3. Whatchu Gonna Do: Marvelous like Marva, a performance by artist Keijaun Thomas.
In this immersive solo work, Thomas interrogates and embodies resistance, asking: “How do we resist temptation, how do we slow down, how do we play, how do we survive?” Thomas traverses a multimedia installation that extends across Knockdown Center’s expansive main space, combining structural fragments of environments associated with labor, ritual, and hospitality such as locker rooms, strip clubs, waiting rooms, church pews, and field days. Investigating forms through which black and brown people hold space for each other, Thomas demonstrates how to carry the multiplicities of being young, gifted, and black.
Artist Bio
Keijaun Thomas is a New York based artist and current Franklin Furnace Fund Recipient for 2018. Thomas creates live performances and multimedia installations- her work investigates the histories, symbols, and images that construct notions of Black identity within Black personhood. Thomas earned their Masters degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Thomas has presented work nationally and internationally in Los Angeles and Palo, Alto, CA; Portland, OR; Portland, ME; Chicago, IL; Saugatuck, MI; Steuben, WI; Boston and Cambridge, MA; New York, NY; Miami, FL; and Taipei, Taiwan; Paris, France; Mexico City, Mexico; Santiago, Chile; Istanbul, Turkey; Beirut, Lebanon; Saskatchewan and Vancouver, Canada; and the United Kingdom.
This work was made possible, in part, by the Franklin Furnace Fund supported by Jerome Foundation, The SHS Foundation, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Another of Barbara Rosenthal’s 130 video shorts has now been transferred analog to digital VHS to HD is now online. Muzeul Național de Artă Contemporană, Bucharest, Romania (MNAC) presents Pierderea Iernii / Losing Winter, an exhibition of the work of American artist Lynn Cazabon, 6 -18 September 2018. Cazabon was the winner of the 2018 Re-Constructing MNAC Outreach Program competition, resulting in her 3-month residency in Bucharest. Pierderea Iernii / Losing Winter is an archive of memories about the season of winter, using human recollection of weather to provide a glimpse of climate change as it intersects with individual lifetimes. Cazabon recorded people narrating their memories about winter at various locations in Bucharest in July in exchange for custom-packaged ice cream and worked with a local ice artist to create a series of unique ice sculptures based on selected memories that are the subject of her new video MELT. The project will also be available as a stand-alone website (http://pierderea-iernii.ro).

I am very excited about two upcoming and free events related to the films which have been occupying my attention now for some time.
First, PBS AMERICAN MASTERS will be broadcasting Everybody Knows…Elizabeth Murray on Friday September 7th at 9 PM. But you can have more fun by joining me, Producer/Director Kristi Zea, poet and arts activist Bob Holman and other members of Elizabeth’s wonderful family at HOWL, 6 East First Street, Manhattan, September 7th at 8 PM where we will host a live broadcast and a celebration of Elizabeth Murray.
Second, Migraine Research Foundation will be hosting a free screening of Out of My Head, on Thursday, Sept. 20th at 7PM at the NYIT Auditorium in Manhattan. Two Timely Exhibitions and a Portrait
I’m excited to have work in two shows about the expanding US prison system, one in Houston, TX, the other in New York – I hope some of you will make it to see them – details below. They coincide with a tide of resistance. People everywhere are working to undo the mass injustices of the US prison and immigrant prison system. Thousands of those trapped inside have just started a nationwide prison strike to end inhumane treatment behind bars: please support them! Promote their 10 demands via #August21 and #prisonstrike .
In England, I was happy that a book of lectures by my friend Eric Griffiths, If Not Critical finally came out, and included my long-ago painting of him, leading to its reproduction in The Economist and the TLS. The Economist reviewed, If Not Critical, edited by Freya Johnston, reproducing my 1980 painting of him.
Walls Turned Sideways: Artists Confront the Justice System at the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, August 25th 2018 – January 6th 2019 In addition to the site specific sign designed for CAM Houston, shown at the top, several other examples of signs from my ongoing ICE Escape project are included. The show ‘features work by artists from across the nation that addresses the criminal justice system, mass incarceration, and the prison-industrial complex.’ Curated by Risa Puleo, with a catalogue to come as well.
Due Process at theMINI/Goethe-Institut space Ludlow 38 also includes the work of artists focusing on aspects of mass incarceration and the abusive US justice system.

ICE Escape Signs – site specific signs which map escape routes in the event of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid – is a project I began over 10 years ago during the Bush era. Each sign begins with a conversation about ICE raids with people who work in the place it is designed for. Those who are citizens are asked to think what they might do to assist any vulnerable co-workers or visitors.

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce One thing after another (part two), a solo exhibition of work by Pope.L. This is the artist’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery and the first in New York since he was awarded the Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2017. One thing after another (part two) elliptically follows Pope.L’s similarly titled exhibition at La Panacée in Montepellier- the artist’s first major solo museum show in France.
Pope.L’s practice often focuses on the uncertain but productive space between differences in language, class, race and gender to create works that simultaneously enlist, mock and re-write convention. For Pope.L, this gap is where ignorance interacts with hubris to create fresh tensions around authenticity, self and icon. The works on view are, as the artist notes, “a disgustingly neat pile of doubt, experiment and denial shoved up hot against claim, leap, gambit, and caesura- your basic scrabbling about in the dark…”

After a short but sweet summer break, we’re delighted to announce that UXO’s next stop will be at the wonderful Time-Based Arts Festival in Porlalnd, Oregon, from the 8th – 12th of September 2018.
PICA’s Time-Based Art Festival activates the city of Portland, Oregon, with contemporary art projects that bring artists and audiences together, creating a vibrant community through live performances, music, screenings, workshops, talks, and visual art installations. TBA is inter-disciplinary, and champions those artists who are challenging forms and working across mediums.
