Visual artist and monologuist Norm Magnusson will be performing his new words and pictures monologue “The Definition of Pornography” at the Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff, NY. It’s a “words and pictures monologue that covers the history of porn, MY history with porn (no cringey details, I promise), where it is right now in the present day (jaw dropping), and where it oughta be.” It’s fun and funny and informative and only 50 minutes long. “Calling the Rain” is an annual 6-week residency, 2 women artists enclosed in one room in the dark of the winter. This living vessel began in 2018 to call forth a body of work, a 25-year practice and prayer to receive and preserve the deep teachings of this tradition. “Two women gazing into each other’s eyes, calling the rain!” comes from from the early Taoist tradition of the Immortal Sisters, the character for the magician/alchemist, she who is called to the hidden root of life in service to truth. The practice/prayer for rain, the grace and benevolence of Heaven.

A time-honored museum tradition, the exhibition features the work of artists who demonstrate the breadth of ways in which one can deploy the humble media of paper to extraordinary ends. From quiet observations amid quarantine, to surreal reflections on hybrid identities, to probing inquiries into the historical roots of racism, the artworks in this year’s installation offer us not only compelling images but creative entry points into urgent conversations.

happy hot and sweaty summer to you! i hope you’re well and thriving. i just wanted to share news about two exciting upcoming exhibitions that i hope you’ll check out.
first, it is with great excitement that i invite you to my upcoming solo exhibition with SPANTZO gallery, titled ’til the moon turns pink. the exhibition runs august 19 – september 19, 2021 with an opening reception on thursday august 19 from 6-8pm. (<—save that date and come drink wine with me!)
taking my cue from barbie, the classic doll, this exhibition explores both the restriction and freedom of play as it relates to the formation and safeguards of femininity, resulting in a joyfully flirtatious and flippintly defiant body of work across abstract painting and video that solidifies into my own trippy and gooey version of the barbie dream home and a performative ethos of femininity itself, complete with needed show tunes and some very unnecessary terfs.

a series of DRAMATIC EPISODIC PERFORMANCES

Is presence permanent? What is Acceptance?
Erasure? Love? Power?
Does the process of healing need to be so ugly as you attempt to establish presence?
Is my healing journey from anger, frustration, rejection and pain political and does it need to be?
This four-part series of performances slowly and barely unpacks fears, exasperations, erasure and love. The feeling of navigating in the dark is portrayed through the camera’s shifts/movements, the visual choppiness, the hesitations in thought process, and misspoken words. They serve as existential scaffoldings of one’s healing process; messy, awkward and painful.
Being Seen / Heard is presented in conjunction with In Practice: You may go, but this will bring you back, the twenty-fifth iteration of our open call program. The Nieuwstraat is an average street in the center of Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
The Nieuwstraat Festival took place on June 19, 2021, between sunrise and midnight. The performances were performed by volunteers, unannounced and without explanation.
The performances involved took place in everyday environments and hid the unusual within the usual. Passers-by will have observed the actions, but may not have recognized them as
performance art.
The Nieuwstraat Festival fits in a series of Unnoticed Art Festivals. It balances on the line between public and private. It shows artworks hiding in normality. The language, used to express the works, fits in the average social behaviour in public space and, because of that, remained unnoticed to bystanders. Creating the concepts and executing the works are split. Artists send their concepts more or less as manuals. The chosen works are carried out by a group of (both experienced and unexperienced) volunteers. These volunteers have a double roll. They are participants as well as audience. They are responsible for realizing the performances in the best possible way and, doing that, they fully experience the works. In fact they become part of it.
This way the audience is not excluded but it is actually embedded.

Dear Friends,
I’m very excited to announce the opening of my first public art commission: Higher Ground. It also happens to be the first climate change-themed mini golf hole I’ve designed. Go figure.
Higher Ground https://www.marktribestudio.com/higher-ground/
is part of Putting Green, a public engagement project disguised as a mini golf course on the Williamsburg waterfront in Brooklyn. In my hole, Higher Ground, the turf takes the shape of Manhattan in the year 2100, when climate change, if it continues unabated, will have caused a dramatic sea level rise. Around the turf, a satellite image of the flooded neighborhoods is visible under a few inches of water. Other holes were designed by Mel Chin, Paul Amenta and Blane De St. Croix, Dear Climate (Una Chaudhuri, Marina Zurkow and Blake Goble), Kim Holleman, Juanli Carrión, the Institute for Aesthletics and Tom Russotti, and the Billion Oyster Project, among others. Also, I’m super happy to announce the completion of Deep Green, https://www.marktribestudio.com/deep-green/ the second in my ongoing series of 24-hour recordings of wild landscapes. The Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland, Oregon commissioned Deep Green and will add it to its permanent collection later this year. Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the Kickstarter Campaign and helped make this project happen.
Finally, I have work in State of Nature, https://www.indianamuseum.org/experiences/state-of-nature/ an exhibition at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis on view through September 19th.
