2. Jonathan Berger, FF Alumn, at #VEDATakeOver online, May 19-26
In these unknown times, we believe that galleries should continue to stimulate conversation and platform artistic voices. Sustaining discourse under social distancing is critical to the health of our communities.
Thus, we are happy to launch a #VEDATakeOver involving artists represented by the gallery. On a weekly basis, each artist will be managing the Stories feed of our instagram account and sharing contents without limitations or indications.
#VEDATakeOver will start tomorrow and follow the calendar below:
April 1/8 – Damon Zucconi
April 9/16 – Aviva Silverman
April 17/24 – Andrés Laracuente
April 25 / May 2 – Marius Engh
May 3/10 – Dominique White
May 11/18 – Amitai Romm
May 19/26 – Jonathan Berger

I’m most happy to hear your thoughts and contributions.
With every best,
As ever,
Susan

(Other examples are at http://peterdagostino.com/proj.html )
This is the first time the Reese Palley Gallery history has been reconstructed and shared since it presented groundbreaking works by artists who now hold a significant place in the development of conceptualism, including Bruce Nauman, Stephen Kaltenbach, Terry Fox, Howard Fried, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni, and many more. Nothing to Sell: On Reese Palley Gallery, a longer form essay by Connie Lewallen and Jordan Stein, was commissioned on the occasion of the Cushion Works exhibition by Open Space,
SFMOMA’s online and live interdisciplinary commissioning platform.

Dipping a toe in punk, performance, art, music and theater, but never categorically plunging into any of these classifications, the ambiguity of Johanna Went’s avant-garde practice became notorious spectacles that brought in curious audiences from the art, Hollywood, and fashion world. Performances were chaotic rituals, composed of indiscernible singing/screaming vocals, improvised music, transformations into and out of whimsical and campy handmade costumes, animals parts, and props constructed out of found materials that were often torn, destroyed, or cut; objects spewed fake blood from amputated limbs constructed with sausage casings and oatmeal, for example. While many performances mined a gruesome aesthetic, Went also integrated humor and play, throwing giant tampons at the audience while dancing and writhing with stuffed dummies, exploring how the absurd, the grotesque and the vile can be humorous, intriguing and even cathartic.
Growing up in Seattle, Went began performing in 1975 with Tom Murrin, FF Alumn, in improvisational theater groups Para-Troupe and the World’s Greatest Theater Company, touring North America and Europe in 1976. After settling in L.A. in 1977, Went began performing solo at a variety of venues, eventually meeting sound artist Z’EV and long-time collaborator Mark Wheaton, prompting the introduction of live improvised music played by a band to Went’s wild and chaotic shows. Eventually, the work gained notoriety in the inclusive punk and art communities surrounding downtown Los Angeles. In 1979 Went performed at the historic venue Hong Kong Café, and within the next year performed at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), The Whisky, Massachusetts Institute of Art, and Al’s Bar, and was on the cover of Slash magazine.

Harley –After 18 weeks of parading through fossil fuel financing Chase Bank, suddenly the virus arrives, the doors shut and the masks slide on… and now we have the bends, lurching from public to private in what seemed like a flash.. I’m writing from our long table, at one end is my study and the other is where we eat meals. Thats New York! We live in small apartments. The choir is fine, so far two pretty minor Covid related illnesses came and went. We are grateful for our health, and the community, and the support, especially your support. Thank YOU. This is our last action, Friday March 13th. The Oracles arrive! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJMJ4eeS0rE&feature=youtu.be
We’ve been quarantined since. Except one day something made me want to return to where I started preaching 22 years ago, so I rode my bike up to Times Square. The old tourist trap was mostly empty, but the Naked Cowboy was there, and a forlorn Spiderman, waiting for a pose.
John Quilty walked over from Hell’s Kitchen and made some pictures.
We think you might enjoy this PLAYLIST of 13 of our RADICAL LUNCHES, its pretty interesting to watch them together. Let us know what you think and please subscribe.

We hope you are doing ok, it sure isn’t easy out there.. . but at the end of another lockdown day I say, This is the moment for us to notice: the Earth is alive and thriving with consciousness. Can we listen? We rehearse on zoom on Sunday evenings, do you want to drop in? write to Savitri@revbilly.com
