This week’s spotlight is on Kathy Westwater’s “The Fortune Cookie Dance,” which imagined a future of choreography based in interactive online media. This 30-minute documentary of Westwater’s 1999 work blends a discussion between the artist and Franklin Furnace’s Martha Wilson with the demonstration of a downloadable digital/CD-ROM version of the piece. Viewers were invited to “click a cookie” and their choices yielded random computer-generated numerical sequences, with an eye to the numbers on the back of paper fortunes within each cookie. The numerical sequences were then used to arrange discrete videotape segments of movement and sound which may never again be replicated in exactly the same way. Incorporating low-tech sounds of overhead projectors, Xerox machines, and spoken word, “The Fortune Cookie Dance” explores modes of communication across history and time. Franc Palaia, FF Alumn, is included in a unique musical project organized my Magazzino-Italian Art of Cold Spring, NY. Magazzino presents, “Cold Spring Soundtrack”.Dec 21 2020 by Marinella Senatore. Italian artist and composer held an open call for people to submit short sound recordings via voicemail, email or text message. Ms. Senatore and her partner and composer, Emiliano Branda collected the 79 pieces of sound, music, noise, vocals etc which included recordings of rain, trains, frogs, roosters, cicadas, crickets, a bicycle commute, construction in the neighboring apartment, songbirds, cat purring, bells of cathedrals in Florence, Italy and Kingston, NY, Black Lives Matter protest chants, drum solos, violin duets, a high school graduation, a birthday party, spoken word poetry, a choral ensemble, electronic music, political newscasts and more.

Palaia’s contribution is a 20 second drum beat solo at minute 8:45-9:05.
Senatore and Branda created a 24 minute original score that interweaves every contribution received, creating a symphonic soundscape made up of individual voices.
At the heart of this project is the desire to find a cohesive, empowered voice and explore how individual contributions can lead to a meaningful, collective action. The project was completed entirely through remote participation, meeting the current moment when the pandemic still looms, practices of isolation and social distancing are still in effect, yet collaboration across communities is most needed.

JANUARY 30-APRIL 11
35 New East End Artists to be Featured in Group Show
Southampton Arts Center, located at 25 Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton Village, is pleased to announce the return of East End Collected, now in its sixth iteration. Conceived and curated by Artist Paton Miller, EEC6 will open on Saturday, January 30 and run through Sunday, April 11, 2021. Galleries will be open Friday to Sunday, 12-5 PM. Admission is Free, but a $5 donation is suggested and appreciated. East End Collected6 is sponsored by Ingrid Arneberg and Will Marin.
East End Collected draws attention to the large population of artists living in the region and reflects Paton Miller’s vision of the East End as an ideal environment for artists to create work. In this sixth iteration of the popular exhibition, Miller continues with the intention of never showing the same artist twice. Since its 2015 launch, the EEC series has featured over 200 individuals. Through this exhibition, Southampton Arts Center celebrates 35 new artists and further establishes SAC as a vibrant home where the East End arts scene continues to thrive.
Tom Dunn, SAC’s Executive Director, stated, “We are delighted to open 2021 with East End Collected, the series that helped establish SAC as the dynamic multidisciplinary center it is today. Paton has once again assembled a dynamic and exciting group of East End artists. We simply cannot wait to share this show with our community.”
Of the beloved series, Paton Miller says, “In 2012 I was invited to a meeting to discuss the possibility of creating an arts center at 25 Jobs Lane. I was asked my opinion and I said, to what would become the founding members of the Southampton Art Center, that if they were setting about opening an arts center, to survive they must be loved. To achieve that I said their focus should be on the incredible artistic depth and diversity of our immediate region. A few months later I was invited to curate the first East End Collected exhibition. Here we are these years later and under extreme circumstances with our sixth installment having exhibited more than 200 artists.” Miller concluded, “I’d like to thank Amy Kirwin, Tom Dunn and the Board of SAC for everything they have done to support me in exhibiting the artists of the East End Collected series. Curating these shows has been an honor and revelatory experience.”

My latest public artwork—Coo Lot with Plum Pipes–repurposes 2 empty residential lots into a jaunty entrance to Cleveland’s R.J. Taylor Park. Referencing the nearby Nottingham Water Treatment Plant, it’s a 135-ft labyrinthine of water pipes, with a swaying bench, pipes that provide bench-like seating, and light that spills out of the vertical pipes at night.
