Franklin Furnace Archive will celebrate its 45th Anniversary on April 3, 2021, from 7-8 pm, with a free public online party announcing new members of its Board of Directors and the launch of its new website and digital Loft for live presentations. The public is invited to meet members of Franklin Furnace’s Board of Directors, Visionary Committee, and Staff, join a guided tour of our new website, and have a slice or three of virtual cake.
In 1976, Martha Wilson decided to found an organization to present, preserve, interpret, proselytize and advocate on behalf of avant-garde art, especially forms that may be vulnerable due to institutional neglect, cultural bias, their ephemeral nature, or politically unpopular content. Franklin Furnace is dedicated to serving artists by providing both physical and virtual venues for the presentation of time-based art, including but not limited to artists’ books and periodicals, installation art, performance art, and unforeseen contemporary avant-garde artforms; and to undertake other activities related to these purposes. Franklin Furnace is committed to serving emerging artists; to assuming an aggressive pedagogical stance with regard to the value of avant-garde art to life; and to fostering artists’ zeal to broadcast ideas.
As part of its pledge to better represent the communities it serves, Franklin Furnace’s Board of Directors has invited three new members to join its ranks, Juan Aruego, an Earnings Editor for CNBC; Pablo Helguera, the multidisciplinary artist behind the public art project and think-tank “The School of Panamerican Unrest;” and Carole Naggar, a writer and Series Editor for the Magnum Photos Legacy Biography Series. With their varied backgrounds, the incoming Board members will work on the organization’s mission to identify and amplify peripheral artistic voices. Ricardo Miranda Zúñiga, Chair, says, “As human life in the United States has entirely been commodified, existence financialized, and an underbelly of racism has reared its ugly head, Franklin Furnace’s support of emerging creative voices that perform toward an equitable future and are global in scope is more important than ever.”
The new website www.FranklinFurnace.org designed and built by Program Manager Arantxa Araujo with a cohort of university interns, aims for a cleaner look, improved navigability, and features the LOFT, our new virtual space providing artists with a worldwide platform on which to present avant-garde works of art.

Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus, Stations of the Cross, 2021
March 1st – April 4th: I am participating in a virtual exhibition, Monuments to the Future, the 2021 edition of the on-going Stations of the Cross project hosted by the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts & Religion. A public art project that seeks to use the Passion story to prompt reflection and action in response to social injustice, my work forecasts the recent Anti-Asian sentiment of the continuing pandemic. In DOWN TO EVERYTHING artists Daniel M.E. Schaal, Dario Srbic, Fernanda Trevellin, Elana Katz and Julia Wolf present work in dialogue with <the house>, pertaining to the action/ notion of the SLICE, in reference to everything, as well as the downfall of everything. This exhibition marks the 1 year anniversary of the opening of House for the End of the World, and is curated by Elana Katz and Dario Srbic.
HEW is a project space by artist and curator Elana Katz in cooperation with Gallery KWADRAT, founded in Berlin in March 2020. HEW’s activities are reactionary creative and critical experimentation, including site-specific installations, actions, and discourse — both in the context of public events and the intimacy of studio work. Launched at the beginning of Berlin’s COVID-19 lock-down, in the context of the current pandemic HEW functions as a dystopian sanctuary created by artists in surreal and uncertain times.
Founded at Falckensteinstraße 24 in Berlin Kreuzberg, HEW as a conceptual platform operates in a transitory manner. This house will thus regularly occupy different spaces, working in a site-specific manner at each location. Launched with a livestream group exhibition featuring Dario Srbic, Alessandro Rauschmann, Natalia Korotyaeva, Leonardo Borri, Elana Katz, and Exildiscount, HEW’s program has also included group exhibition NULL PUNKT NULL NULL with Philip Kojo Metz, Lisa Stertz, Martyna Poznanska, and Fernanda Trevellin, as well as solo performances by Elana Katz, Lisa Stertz, and Dario Srbic. Accompanying the exhibition program, HEW presented an artist talk series with invited speakers Marek Claaßen, founder of Artfacts.net, curator Chiara Valci Mazzara, and art historian Jasmine Hagedorn, in conversation with artists and collaborators of <the house> . HEW is pleased to have hosted a solo exhibition by Hans Peter Kuhn, MEHR LICHT, November – December 2020. The group exhibition DOWN TO EVERYTHING (March 2021) will mark the 1 year anniversary of the public launch of HEW as a contemporary art space. HEW looks forward to continuing a program focused on site-specificity in 2021.

Dear Friends,
We’re not yet going anywhere by airplane, but a photograph of my assemblage artwork, Sheltering, is currently part of an exhibition at the Long Beach Airport. Installed on large construction barriers at the entrance to the airport, the works are all pandemic-related and by women. It will be exhibited for the next 6 months.
