Weekly Spotlight: Martha Wilson, FF Alumn, at New York Public Library, Main Branch, Manhattan, November 4

Martha Wilson and Anne Turyn present two ground-breaking publications documenting 1970s-1980s New York Avant-Garde performance and bookmaking.

Wed. Nov 4, 2026 6:00pm EST

Lenox & Astor Room, Room 216

The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

42nd Street & 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10018

Artist and Franklin Furnace founder Martha Wilson (www.MarthaWilson.com) will discuss her new book, Back to the Present: 50 Years of Free Expression with Franklin Furnace, a 50th-anniversary celebration of the legendary arts institution Franklin Furnace. This visually rich volume captures five decades of boundary-breaking art and the ongoing fight to defend creative freedom. Further, it chronicles stories by individuals from arts groups across the U.S.A. who also fought in the Culture Wars of the Reagen 80s. Anne Turyn, a New York-based fine art photographer, will share Top Stories, a prose periodical that she edited and published from 1978 to 1991. Over the course of twenty-nine issues, it served as a pivotal platform for experimental fiction and art through single-artist issues and two anthologies. Primarily featuring female artists, though in Turyn’s words a few men “crept in as collaborators,” Top Stories was recently rereleased by Primary Information.

This event is organized in collaboration with https://10x10photobooks.org/

To join | Please register for an In-Person Ticket at this link:  https://events.leapevents.com/event/martha-wilson-anne-turyn

All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Martha Wilson is a pioneering feminist artist whose five-decade career spans photography and performance exploring female subjectivity through role-playing and impersonations of other people’s personae. In 1976, she founded Franklin Furnace, a New York artist-run space dedicated to exploring, promoting, and preserving artists’ books, installation and performance art, video, and online art. Her work is in museum collections including MoMA, the Met, Whitney, Centre Pompidou, and the Albertina.

Anne Turyn is a fine art photographer based in New York City. Turyn attended Antioch College (BFA), the University of Buffalo (MFA) and the CUNY Graduate Center (MA Linguistics). She was part of the Hallwalls community in Buffalo, NY, where she founded and edited Top Stories, a prose periodical and chapbook series featuring one artist per issue (1978-1991).  Her work has been exhibited at MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Kunstverein Amsterdam, among others.

1. Hector Canonge, FF Alumn, at Lyon Biennale, France, thru Dec. 15

HECTOR CANONGE, FF Alumn, opens new exhibition project “VESTIGES DE L’EPHIMERE” for the program Résonance in the 18th edition of the Lyon Biennale, October through December 15, 2026, Lyon, France.

Hector Canonge returned to Lyon, France, fro the production of his latest project that will take place at various sites during the Biennale de Lyon Art Contemporain (October 15 to November 30). Canonge’s “VESTIGES DE L’EPHEMERE” (Remnants of the Ephemeral) is a collaboration with artist Wilson Tapia, and reflects on the relation of corporal actions and the urban terrain’s architectural conformation. Through a series of public interventions in the traditional Traboules of the city of Lyon, the project functions as a catalyst for the creation of a multidisciplinary exhibition, public workshops and academic lectures on the nature of participatory performative actions and psychogeographic experience.

The project’s program for Resonance 2026 will launch the exhibition of VESTIGES at the museum La Maison des Dauphins in La Tour du Pin, October 28, followed by a Conference on October 29, and public workshops on October 30. The finissage is scheduled for November 2026 where the performances will be presented at various Traboules in the historical center of the city of Lyon. The bienal is on view until December 2026.

4. Yunjia Yuan, FF Intern Alumn, at Accent Sisters, Manhattan, opening Nov. 7

I want to reach out and invite you to the opening of my upcoming exhibition, Songs of a Cricket, on November 7 at Accent Sisters in New York.

The project grew out of my father’s decades-long passion for keeping and fighting crickets in Shanghai. Bringing classical Chinese literature, oral histories, and the material culture of cricket fighting into conversation, the exhibition explores how this folk tradition has been remembered, interpreted, and passed down across generations.

Moving between historical records, personal memories, and contemporary reinterpretations, the exhibition also considers how the cricket’s story can be retold today. Songs of a Cricket, a novel that imagines cricket fighting from the cricket’s perspective, and artist Jianhao Zheng’s robotic crickets offer two distinct ways of rethinking this tradition, through speculative storytelling and contemporary technology.

12. Cynthia Karalla, FF Member, at Tooker Gallery, Newburgh, NY, opening Nov. 7

Artist Cynthia Karalla

Presents Negative / Positive

at Tooker Gallery in Newburgh

Exhibition opening November 7 explores how accidents, failures, and unexpected events can become the source of artistic discovery.

NEWBURGH, NY — Artist Cynthia Karalla will present Negative / Positive, an exhibition of photographic and mixed-process projects born from accidents, disruption, and unexpected turns, at Tooker Gallery, 195 Front Street, Newburgh, New York, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 2 to 7 p.m.

Rooted in Karalla’s background in Hermetic philosophy and alchemy, Negative / Positive explores the transformative moment when something that appears broken, unsuccessful, or unwanted becomes the beginning of something new.

Rather than following a predetermined artistic plan, Karalla allows life to enter her studio. A damaged photographic negative, an accident, a period of forced inactivity, or even a disappointing purchase can become the starting point for an entirely unexpected work of art.

“I do not plan my work,” Karalla explains. “The mistake was the method.”

The exhibition brings together projects including Flash & Failure, Days of the Untitled, Bleached, Cracked Ribs, Age of Beauty, and It’s Craigslist, Toots! Each emerged from an unanticipated circumstance that redirected the artist’s process and opened new possibilities.

In Bleached, Karalla experiments with the destructive effects of unknown chemicals on photographic negatives, challenging the traditional impulse to protect and preserve the photographic image. Cracked Ribs originated during recovery from an accident, when boredom and breathing exercises became the unlikely conditions for a new photographic series. In It’s Craigslist, Toots!, an experience involving a Craigslist purchase that went wrong ultimately developed into one of her biggest Positives.

Across these projects, Karalla embraces uncertainty, allowing materials and circumstances to shape the outcome. Her work reflects a larger philosophy: that meaning is not always inherent in what happens to us, but can emerge through how we respond.

“For me, the movement between negative and positive is more than a method of making art. It is a way of looking at life,” Karalla says. “Not in perfection, but in transformation. Not in controlling the outcome, but in allowing life to participate.”

With Negative / Positive, Karalla invites viewers to reconsider the role of failure, damage, and disruption—not simply as obstacles, but as opportunities for discovery and new ways of seeing.

The exhibition offers a timely reminder that creativity does not always begin with a vision. Sometimes, it begins when things do not go as planned.

14. Kimsooja, FF Alumn, at Center for Contemporary Arts, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, thru Jan. 31, 2027, and more

Hikmah

06 September, 2026 — 31 January, 2027

Inaugural Exhibition

Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Kimsooja, Archive of Mind, 2016, participatory site-specific installation consisting of clay balls, 19m elliptical wooden table, and 16 channel sound performance by the artist, Unfolding Sphere, 2016. Courtesy of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Hyundai Motor Company, and Kimsooja Studio. Photo by Byung Cheol Jeon.

Hikmah marks the opening of the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent) and is rooted in the concept of wisdom as it relates to material intelligence and higher levels of consciousness. The exhibition also draws upon the building’s layered past, first as an Imperial-era structure, then as a Soviet-era tram depot and diesel station, offering a space of movement and holding a very particular architectural memory. Reimagined by Studio KO, the building has been sensitively restored using vernacular methods and materials, crafts, and design from across Uzbekistan, weaving together the country’s diverse geographies and cultural vocabularies.

To celebrate the inauguration, Kimsooja will be showing Archive of Mind, a site-specific installation built with audience participation throughout. Audiences will be invited to sit at a large table and form spheres with clay with their hands and place them on top of the table. This leaves unspoken traces that become part of the collective material intelligence of memory and ritual.

The Body Within Abstraction

26 September – 10 January, 2027

Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich, Switzerland

Kimsooja is participating in The Body Within Abstraction at Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich (26 September 2026 – 10 January 2027). Curated by Sabine Schaschl and Muriel Pérez, the group exhibition questions the long-held view that constructivist-concrete art leaves no room for the body, and looks at how the body shapes and structures non-figurative work. It brings together Heidi Bucher, Eva Fàbregas, Kimsooja, Dóra Maurer, Bruce Nauman, Steven Parrino, Chiharu Shiota and Franz West. Kimsooja presents Meta-Painting and Bottari. Meta-Painting, unbleached canvases stretched over wooden frames and suspended in the space, shown with three bottaris made from the same fabric and placed on the floor. Set side by side, the empty surface, the wrapped bundle and the cloth that dresses the body are revealed as one material, and the body is present in the work quietly rather than as an image.

A Needle Woman – Tokyo

10 October – 20 December, 2026

TOKYO ATLAS, Isle Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan

This facility was once the city’s garbage collection site. Through redevelopment, the surrounding waterfront plazas and promenades have been improved, and the area has been reborn as an urban space that carries traces of its past. In this setting, where built structures, open water, remnants of earlier uses coexist, works planned for display include a video installation by Kimsooja and Sasaoka Yuriko, and the exhibition will feature installation works by Mori Keita, along with other artworks.

and

Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2026

30 September – 15 November, 2026

Jinhae Station, Changwon, Republic of Korea

Deductive Object – The Grid is an attempt to expand the concept of “weaving,” which the artist has long explored through painting, sewing, and bottari practices, into a spatial discipline. Here, the grid is not merely a geometric order, but a canon existing within artist Kimsooja’s oeuvre, intersecting textile, architecture, and painting. Much like the structure of canvas where warp and weft cross, the grid functions as a fundamental principle that organizes the world and a form that generates relationships. In this project, the method of stacking bricks corresponds to the process of weaving fabric, realizing the canon of the grid in an architectural dimension through repetitive arrangement and accumulation.

Jinhae Station serves not merely as a background for the installation, but as a vital element constituting the artwork. In particular, the linear structure and repeating rhythm of the railway tracks naturally respond to the brick grid, evoking the structural nature of weaving. Rather than being a completed sculpture, the work anchors the horizontal railway track, situating the body between motion and stillness.

LACMA Collection Exhibition

from 19 April 2026 (permanent exhibition)

David Geffen Galleries, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, USA

In celebration of the inauguration of the new David Geffen Galleries of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Kimsooja’s six-channel performance video of A Needle Woman – Patan, Havana, Rio de Janeiro, N’Djamena, Sanaa, Jerusalem is now on view as part of the museum collection exhibition. Filmed in some of the most challenging cities to travel to, this work portrays Kimsooja’s body in stillness as an axis of time that traverses through people and cities across the world.

and

In Search of the Present

14 March, 2026 – 7 February, 2027

Group show at Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland

Kimsooja uses reflective surfaces to create a space that challenges the traditional notion of painting via “non-making” and “non-doing”. The viewer, the space and the artwork merge into a single entity that has perception at its core. One of Kimsooja’s best-known works is the To Breathe series, in which she investigates light, color, breath and movement. Her work at EMMA continues the series, expanding the ideas about the nature of painting by painting with light, projected onto the mirrored platform from above to form a tableau of color.

15. Marni Kotak, FF Alumn, at Grace Exhibition Space, Manhattan, thru Nov. 28

Marni Kotak

America on the Dark Side of the Moon

October 22 – November 28, 2026

Opening Thursday October 22, 6-8pm

Presented by Microscope at Grace Exhibition Space at 182 Avenue C, New York, NY 10009

Microscope is very pleased to present “America on the Dark Side of the Moon” as the seventh solo exhibition of works by Marni Kotak with the gallery. The show, which draws correlations between a mental health crisis the artist experienced and the current state of the country, will take place offsite, occupying the two floors of Grace Exhibition Space in the East Village, where Kotak constructed her newest installation.

The catalyst for the durational performance/installation, video, sculptures, paintings, and drawings on view is a manic episode during the first Trump administration where Kotak heard Richard Nixon’s voice say: “We’re Back! This is America on the dark side of the moon. Go write down your thoughts about it on a dollar bill.”

With urgency, and a sense of dark humor, Kotak’s works advocate for the “power of individuals to affect change by reclaiming their emotional response to the current political environment in the US,” one in which political leaders, oligarchs, corporations, judges and others operate with increasing impunity and authoritarianism, with little regard for the health, welfare, and existence of this country’s populace.

The performance/installation, “America on the Dark Side of the Moon,” condenses a half century of US politics, a period that nearly corresponds to Kotak’s lifetime, within a single setting: her darkened living room, dimly lit by an oppressive, glowing hand-painted moon. Pink Floyd’s 1973 album plays on a vintage record player. And, a video “We’re Back!” — juxtaposing news broadcasts of Nixon’s resignation, NASA’s Apollo missions, Trump’s addresses to the nation, and the recent Artemis II flights — loops on a Zenith console TV.

Each day of the show, which encompasses the midterm elections, Kotak draws on one-dollar bills that she has scattered across a grey-painted US flag rug, each representing one year of this country. In these drawings Kotak responds to the daily news and conversations she has with gallery visitors who she invites to share — over tea — their own current struggles. Once completed she affixes the drawing over its dark areas, which due to its size becomes more difficult as the show progresses.

Related works on view expand upon economic, political, and mental health themes of the performance/installation. A new medium-sized sculpture featuring a hand-painted metallic moon sits atop an Amazon delivery container. A two-channel video “American Left/Right Channels” (2025) constructs a dialogue from separate conversations the artist had with her father (a MAGA Republican) and her mother-in-law (a life-long queer woman’s rights activist), who are sitting in their respective living rooms in Massachusetts and Texas.

A series of back-lit vanity mirrors “My Time on the Dark Side of the Moon” (2024-26) represents the eight phases of the moon onto which the artist has hand-painted excerpts from actual diary entries she made between 2015 and 2020. Selections from “For What It’s Worth” (2016-present), an ongoing series of sharpie and acrylic on actual dollar bills of several denomitations or, more recently, on the artist’s own “Dark Side Dollars.” The series which began shortly with her Nixon hallucination in 2016, not only provides a record of White House actions over the past decade, but also Kotak’s mental breakdown and return to stability.

In the sculpture “Mad Me Victory” (2026), Kotak both exposes and embraces the depths of what she refers to as her “madness.” Among the actual objects and photographs from that time period that occupy a triangular shelf unit are what now read as prescient self-portraits of Kotak adopting various personas each tasked with saving the country from itself.

“Marni Kotak: America on the Dark Side of the Moon” opens Thursday October 22 and continues through November 28.

The exhibition is presented by Microscope Gallery at Grace Exhibition Space at 142 Avenue C, New York, NY 10009.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 12-6pm

NEW YORK CITY. – Viridian Artists is pleased to present the 18th iteration of Art from Detritus: Recycling with Imagination. The exhibit extends from Tuesday, October 20, through Saturday, November 7, 2026. The Opening Reception will be Thursday, October 22, 6—8 PM, with a closing reception on Saturday, November 7, 4—6 PM.

Art from Detritus showcases artworks made from recycled, reclaimed, and discarded materials, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and demonstrating the creative potential of waste. Art from Detritus is an ongoing series of juried and curated exhibitions founded by American artist and curator Vernita Nemec in 1994. Nemec organized the first Art from Detritus exhibition in Portland, Oregon in collaboration with the National Recycling Coalition and the National Audubon Society, to highlight the artistic possibilities of post-consumer materials.

The exhibition emerged during a period of growing public concern about waste management, recycling infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. Following the success of the inaugural show, Nemec has continued to curate Art from Detritus exhibitions in cities including New York, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Phoenix and has received supportive funding from the Puffin Foundation and the Kaufmann Foundation. Each iteration has featured artists working with discarded materials and trash such as paper, plastics, metal, fabric, and found objects, emphasizing the diversity of recycled material practices.

How did these artists come to make art with discarded materials? Each has an interesting story to tell, and the artworks themselves perhaps offer a clue as to their initial inspiration. Vernita Nemec, aka Vernita N’Cognita, the curator and organizer of the Detritus exhibits, is also an artist who often works with junk mail and plastic discards. She grew up in Painesville, Ohio, learning to value reusing, seeing her mother draw and make her grocery lists on used envelopes.

Critic Ed McCormack called Nemec’s “Endless Junkmail Scroll” an encapsulation of the philosophy of aesthetic ecology that prompted her to found the Art from Detritus movement (art made from recycled materials).

Art from Detritus: Recycling with Imagination is an exhibit at the forefront of aesthetic ecology. It speaks to the ongoing problem of waste and the destruction it causes to our environment. More than 40 emerging, established, and under-known artists have come together to show their environmental concerns creatively. They have transformed objects formerly considered to be potentially trash into objects of beauty with economic and cultural value, aka Art with a capital A.

The central premise of Art from Detritus is that discarded materials can serve as both medium and message. The exhibition highlights:

environmental concerns related to waste and overconsumption

the aesthetic and conceptual potential of reclaimed materials

the role of artists in modeling sustainable practices

Art from Detritus remains one of the longest-running recycled-material art initiatives in the United States. Its emphasis on sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement has influenced subsequent eco-art exhibitions, zero-waste art programs, and environmentally focused artist residencies. Nemec’s leadership in the series has also shaped her broader reputation as a pioneer of recycled material art and a significant figure in the intersection of environmentalism and contemporary artistic practice. The series has provided a platform for hundreds of artists whose practices engage with sustainability, environmental critique, and material reuse.
