Project Description:

Luendu/Journey

In the ancestral conceptions of my people, we do not only get born once but a few times during our life time. Birth-like rituals are reenactments where the spiritual and the material world converge. For me, artistic and performative practices are also such converging points and moments of transformations. When imbalances are weakening our communities, spirits appear to recreate a prosperous life between humans and all living beings. There is a strong interdependency between the DR Congo’s soil and today’s digital world and communication systems: a vast amount of the resources that fuel the contemporary come from the DR Congo, be it coltan, copper, or other resources.

In the last thirty years, millions of people have died in my country because of the global hunger for these resources. “Luendu” is a performance that revolves around these topics and activates mythological figures to create connections between times and spaces and the possibility to engage beyond recurring violence. It is a reinterpreted birthing ritual that shows the triumph of life over death, of resistance over oppression, of resilience over exploitation.

Weekly Spotlight: **FIRST FIFTY VOICES**

Chin Chih Yang is a Taiwanese-born, New York-based performance and installation artist whose work turns industrial waste into political confrontation. With a Franklin Furnace FUND award, he produced Kill Me or Change — a performance at the Queens Museum in which he was buried under 30,000 aluminum cans, the average number a single person throws away in a lifetime. Since then he has received the Vilcek Foundation Fellowship at MacDowell, fellowships from NYFA and NYSCA, been inducted into the NYFA Hall of Fame, and shown work at the United Nations, Rockefeller Center, and MoCA Taipei. Here is what Chin Chih shared with us at our Jubilee Party at BAM:

“I don’t know if I’m an artist or not, but people tell me I’m an artist. I love to do it — something maybe a little crazy. Any trash, any treasure, whatever happens in our society — if something has feelings, touch my heart, I try to do it. Our human being is genius and so creative, and also so dangerous too. I try my best to let myself feel.”

“A frequent guest on “Let Them Talk,” and the second time Barbara Rosenthal is interviewed about her HOMO FUTURUS project, this dialog takes place in her studio, eMediaLoft.org, in the Westbeth Arts Complex, NYC. Intercut with the interview is footage from this summer’s seven Saturdays of her guerrilla art HOMO FUTURUS PROVOCATION CARDS street interaction a stone’s throw from the New Museum. Intercut are explanatory stills from interrelated projects, and a brief reading from the chapter “Homo Futurus in the Trans-Millenial Century” from her novel WISH FOR AMNESIA. In true genius fashion, Rosenthal tosses off another neologism: to “intervelop”: (verb) to make collaborative effort by AI and current humans, especially in the development of a hominin-ai interface/entity.
