4. Paul Zaloom, FF Alumn, at Redcat, Disney Concert Hall, LA, Jan. 18-22.

WOW! REDCAT, at the Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA, presents the World Premiere of Paul Zaloom’s The Mother of All Enemies, January 18-22 (WED-SUN).

WHAT? The wickedly funny puppeteer and satirist gives new meaning to the term “shadow government” with his latest spectacle, a politicized update of the traditional Middle Eastern “Karagoz” shadow play. Using a glut of low-rent special effects, Zaloom plays out a frenetically comic epic in which his Karagoz, a queer-secular humanist-Quaker-Buddhist-agnostic Arab immigrant artist, somehow outfoxes a horde of pursuing adversaries made up of Homeland Security, Al Qaeda, the Statue of Liberty, the Christian Ex-Gay Movement, Minutemen vigilantes, and Israeli and Syrian agents.

WHO? Called “one of the most original and talented political satirists working in the theater” by The New York Times, Paul Zaloom is an OBIE-winning puppeteer and performance artist who has written, designed and performed 12 solo spectacles, including Fruit of ZaloomSick But True, and his latest, The Mother of All Enemies.

A Los Angeles-based artist, Zaloom began his career with his company Bread and Puppet in 1971, and was awarded such grants as the Guggenheim Fellowship and The Cola Award, and received a BESSIE and LA Weekly Theater Award. His highly idiosyncratic work utilizes techniques such as overhead projection, government document exposé, “picture performance”, and hand, rod, shadow, found object, and dummy puppets. For more information, visit http://www.paulzaloom.com/ and www.dantefilm.com/.

WHERE? REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for innovative visual, performing and media arts, is located at the corner of W. 2nd St. and S. Hope St., inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex.

WHEN? Mother of All Enemies runs Wednesday-Sunday, January 18-22, at 8:30 p.m (Sun the 22nd at 3pm). Ticket prices range from $22-14, with student discounts available. Seating is general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the REDCAT box office—located at the corner of 2nd and Hope Streets, by calling 213.237.2800, or at www.redcat.org.

5. Jane Bell Davis, wife of Doug Davis, FF Alumn, died Dec. 30, 2005.

Dear Friends,

i both hate to tell you what i have to tell you and expess at the same time my belief in the strength of her/your soul…and that she will continue to help us all from afar, and nearby. Jane went on to the beyond on Saturday morning, Dec.30, via a heart attack at Roosevelt Hospital Emergency Ward, taken there from Euclid Hall on upper Broadway, an “Assisted Living” residence.” She was cared for by Medicaid and St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Below you will see comments from a marvelous book by a dear, departed friend and collector of mine, the late Eugene M. Schwartz, who, thanks to the generosity of his widow, Barbara Schwartz (who I long now to see), gave my Sentence, which only he had the wit and alertness to recognize so early (in early 1995, shortly after it was commissioned by Susan Hoeltzel, Director of the Lehman College Art/CCNY gallery in the Bronx–where i also had the pleasure of teaching for several years.

He also alone had the wit toward the end of his life–encouraged by the great religious scholar at Princeton, Elaine Pagels– to patch together the great poetry of the Bible, Jesus, and the ancient Judaic gospels. He also speaks of and quotes Mohammed in this early attempt to bring the falsely warring religions together. Its title is “You are not far from the Kingdom of God” (Second Creation Press, 1002).

I thank him for the words below. I thank Jane for advocating a “Quaker wake” at the Whitney Museum when he passed away (she was a birth- right Quaker converted to Episcopalianism at the lovely, battered historic Trinity Church, whose ancient St. Paul’s Chapel became in effect “the Ground Zero Church” on 9/11/01, when it housed overnight victims, battered firemen and policemen…for several days…an extension of its sleep-in program for the poor, which is ongoing.

Jane’s Quaker Wake, which emphasized friends of Gene standing up and discussing his liveliness, compassion, and wit as tho he were alive, was an outstanding success–and monitored/supported by then director David Ross. I hope to do the same for Jane in or near Trinity and St. Paul’s– yes, an interdenominational innovation–but that is how she lived and guided both me and three daughters (two, Laura and Mary Beth by another mother), and a third, Charlotte Victoria, her own, now 23, Godfathered by John Brademas, President Emeritus of NYU.

I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, memories of Jane, and any other form of human discourse in a difficult age given more to killing than to discourse. We must change this. For Jane….
