“Almost Art: Speculative gestures. Aspiration. Utopia.”
Featuring Giancarlo Pagliasso, Carlos Ginzburg, Hamdi Attia, Tom Fruin, Kara Crews and Rudyard Snaggs, Shahram Entekhabi, Pascal Dombis, Karen Shaw, FF Alumn, Cesar Henao

Slought Foundation Exhibition | January 28 – March 25, 2006

Reception: Saturday, January 28, 2006 ; 6:30-8:30pm
Free admission (Reservation not required)

Curated by Osvaldo Romberg Slought Foundation, a non-profit organization rethinking contemporary art, is pleased to announce the exhibition “Almost Art,” on display in the galleries from January 28-March 25, 2006. The public reception will take place on Saturday, January 28th, 2006 from 6:30-8:30pm, with all of the participating artists in attendance. This exhibition has been curated by Osvaldo Romberg, Senior Curator at Slought Foundation. The exhibition “Almost Art” samples work by a variety of international artists whose practices straddle the line between art and sociology, art and technology, and art and anthropology. The artists featured in this exhibition are each contributing to a new ‘low-tech’ sensibility which is at once ironic and interdisciplinary, and that resists lyrical or decorative tendencies.

Participating artists in this exhibition include Giancarlo Pagliasso (Italy), Carlos Ginzburg (Argentina and France), Hamdi Attia (Egypt), Tom Fruin (New York), Kara Crews and Rudyard Snaggs (Philadelphia), Shahram Entekhabi (Iran and Germany), Pascal Dombis (Paris), Karen Shaw (New York), FF Alumn, Cesar Henao (France).

4. China Blue, FF Alumn, at NurtureArt, opening Jan 20, 6-9 pm

NURTUREart Non-Profit, Inc. presents
Once Upon a Time 1
January 20– March 5, 2006
Opening reception: Friday, January 20, 6-9 p.m.
January 3rd, 2006, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY – Once Upon a Time 1 is a multi-media group exhibition, curated by Stéphanie Jeanjean. In conjunction with the exhibition, NURTUREart will present an artist panel on Saturday, February 11th, 2006 moderated by curator Jeanjean.

“Once Upon a Time 1” includes light, sound, video, painting, wall drawing, and photography. Each piece functions both independently and as an installation component in conjunction with its surrounding artworks. The sound pieces, compiled for the exhibition in a soundtrack, play at random creating a variety of possible interactions with the visual scenarios. Once Upon a Time 1 challenges the viewer to explore his/her narrative imagination. It is less a concept for an exhibition than an exhibition in process with moments to create. Once Upon a Time 1 offers the opportunity of open-ended narrations for a visitor to discover and invent. The curator envisions Once Upon a Time 1 as the first in a series of future exhibits exploring this topic.

Featured artists are: Malin Abrahamsson, China Blue, FF Alumn, Jorge Calvo, Lisa Dahl, Mary Edwards, Jill Fehrenbacher, Isabelle Ferreira, Monika Goetz, Seung Jun Lee, Valentina Loi, Oliver Lyons, Arthur Marks, Kristine Marx, Moonching Wu, Marc Spilmont, KimSu Theiler (Gobolux) and Mariana Viegas.

Monika Goetz creates a breathing light piece, which is also the only light source of the exhibition. China Blue, Jorge Calvo, Mary Edwards, Oliver Lyons, and Marc Spilmont made the sound pieces and musical compositions of various rhythms, moods, and ambiances. Isabelle Ferreira, Valentina Loi, and Seung Jun Lee’s works are based on the notion of time and repetition, while Kim Su Theiler  (Gobolux) and Jill Feherenbacher’s pieces interrogate the notion of rhythm and non-places. Emphasizing the concept of the exhibition, works such as Kristine Marx and Moonching Wu’s are especially open in their meanings creating interstices for individual projections and personal narrations to occur. Arthur Marks and Mariana Viegas play with public spaces contrasting with the private sphere that Lisa Dahl and Malin Abrahamsson’s pieces explore.

Stéphanie Jeanjean is a Doctoral Applicant at the Graduate Center of CUNY and an Adjunct Professor of Art History at City College. Regularly Jeanjean writes on Contemporary art for French cultural magazines and newspapers, she has published articles in Art Press, Chronic’art, and Hors d’Oeuvre. In 2004, Jeanjean curated two solo exhibitions in Dijon, France of New-York based artist China Blue. In 2005, she presented a paper at the Annual CAA conference in Atlanta on “Societal Behavior Suggested by Artists from the 1950s to Today.”  Recently, the book she co-edited with Lionel Bovier, “Deux ou trois choses que je sais d’elle… Ecrits et entretiens 1966-2003,” a collection of writings and interviews by Olivier Mosset, has been published by the MAMCO ( Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art), Geneva, Switzerland. In March 2006 Jeanjean will present the exhibition Archaeology of New York at Gallery Korea (Korean Cultural Service in New York) co-curated with Yunkyoung Kim.

6. Susan Share, FF Alumn, at Anchorage Museum, thru March 12

ATTACHMENTS, a solo exhibition of artwork by SUSAN JOY SHARE January 15 – March 12, 2006 at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Alaska

A large solo exhibition of artwork by Susan Joy Share opened at the Anchorage Museum of History in Alaska on Sunday. The 1800 sq. foot gallery contains over 45 multifaceted works by Share who invents books forms and creates performance apparel and fold-out sculpture. ATTACHMENTS includes a new body of work that builds on her 25-year exploration of the book as a surface for painting and collage and an object of movement sound and transformation, yet reaches outside of the book form. Dawnell Smith, arts writer for the Anchorage Daily News says, “With fanciful, meticulous grace, Share explores the kinetics of books.”

Asia Freeman, artist and Director of Bunnell Gallery in Homer, AK, who wrote Share’s catalog essay for the show says, “Like no artist I’ve ever seen, Susan Joy Share combines a multitude of techniques and media derived from bookbinding, sewing, painting, collage and sculpture. She creates exquisitely constructed kinetic forms, architectural spaces, remarkable costumes and experimental books that integrate visual depth, movement and sound. Share evokes places of wonder and surprise like an ancient library, an exotic bazaar, or Oskar Schlemmer’s Bauhaus theater”……”Share defies categorization or genre classification and in book arts, has been an influential innovator,” writes Freeman.

“She was the first to create books as props and apparel,” cites Keith Smith, book artist and author. Referring to Zip-Off Fence, one of the larger and more complex pieces in the show, Smith says, “It is marvelously engineered and typical of Susan’s novel and daring approach.”

For a profile article about Share’s exhibition, go to < www.ADN.com> then go to LIFE, then to ARTS. You may need to complete a free registration. Then scroll down to “SUSAN JOY SHARE….”

Share’s artwork is included in collections at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive and the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection. She has exhibited and performed throughout the US and in England, Ireland, and Hungary.

Share has received grants from the Rasmuson Foundation Artist Fellowship Program, the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Inc. She has also created work for Anchorage’s Municipal 1% for Art Program.
