Through an expanded concept of reading, Well Read examines the cognition and understanding of visual signs, the aesthetic role of language, the negotiation between authors and readers, and the expression and confounding of meaning. Although language appears in some works by the ten included artists, the exhibition aims to transcend the traditional text/image dichotomy, investigating how art conveys information through a variety of means, and how viewers receive and understand this information.

From March 10 through April 2, 2006, PARTICIPANT INC will present Ridykeulous. Curated by Nicole Eisenman and A.L. Steiner, the exhibition is based on their publication of the same name. Ridykeulous is a collaborative effort on the part of the two curators to subvert the languages, both theoretical and visual, which are commonly used to define Feminist or Lesbian art. By exploiting the style of a periodical and borrowing heavily from the aesthetic sensibilities of ‘zine culture, concert promo-flyers, and counter-culture manifestos, Ridykeulous purports to distill a cultural moment or tap into the blood and guts of an underground movement. However, using as a starting point cultural stereotypes about Lesbian art as some sort of “alternative” genre or movement, Ridykeulous seeks the erosion of such conceits and the attendant limitations placed on a culture forced to operate as an alternative, rather than a viable contributor to the conversation at large. Ridykeulous constructs a counter-narrative that no longer adheres to the rules and definitions of either approach.
Multiple works included in the exhibition engage with both the traditional art-historical position of the female subject and the modern commodification of female artists and their work. Ridykeulous proposes an inquiry into how these relationships are reversed, inverted, or made obsolete, utilizing a conscientious play with modes of representation present in pop culture, advertising, and the visual arts.
As Eisenman and Steiner have noted about their publication:

If you are one of those people questioning what is happening on planet earth, the womyn of Ridykeulous and a few of their male enemies purport to have the answer. We will meet your requirements and surpass your expectations, allowing us to serve you better.
Nicole Eisenman is an artist living in New York City. She has had recent solo exhibitions at Barbara Weiss Gallery in Berlin, Van Horn in Düsseldorf, Leo Koenig in New York, and the Museo de Carrillo Gil in Mexico City. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including Goetz meets Falckenberg at Kulturstiftung Phoenix Art, Hamburg, Identity: The Logic of Appearance at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, The Seventh Wave at the John Hansard Gallery, South Hampton, England, Bad Girls at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, and the 1995 Whitney Biennial.
A.L. Steiner lives in New York City. Her photographic and video work was exhibited recently at Levine Gallery in Los Angeles, Starship in Berlin, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco. In 2006, her work will be featured at John Connelly Presents in New York, The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, and RICX in Riga. Steiner is a collective member of Chicks on Speed and teaches at the School of Visual Arts. Her work is featured in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

12. William Wegman, FF Alumn, retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum, March 10 thru May 28
The Brooklyn Museum is the first venue of William Wegman: Funney/Strange, an exhibition exploring forty years of Wegman’s work in all media. The first retrospective of this artist’s work in more than fifteen years, the exhibition is on view from March 10 through May 28. Included are more than 200 works, among them the signature 20 x 24 Polaroids, as well as early black-and-white and altered photographs, as well as paintings, drawings, collages, artists books, videos, and film.
The exhibition has been organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and curated by the independent curator Trevor Fairbrother. After its premiere at Brooklyn, Funney/Strange will travel to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; the Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach; and the Addison Gallery. An extensive catalogue, written by scholar and critic Joan Simon and published by Yale University Press in association with the Addison Gallery of American Art, will accompany the exhibition.
Beloved by the general public and held in critical esteem, Wegman fascinates both audiences for much the same reason: a smart, gently subversive humor that destabilizes the familiar to reveal life’s essential oddity. Throughout his career, he has moved seamlessly among various media, from conceptual works to commissioned magazine shots, from video work to television segments made for Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live; from artist’s books to children’s books, from photographic “landscapes” employing his dogs to his most recent series of paintings that incorporate scenic postcards with drawing, collage, and paint. This exhibition will bring together classic Wegman images with rarely exhibited material and surprising new work.

MC is pleased to present Operation Atropos, a new video work by Coco Fusco and her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Known for her decisive contribution to performance art and her investigation of intercultural perception and gendered experiences of the global economy, Fusco has performed, exhibited, curated and lectured throughout the world, and is the author of English is Broken Here and The Bodies That Were Not Ours and Other Writings.
In Operation Atropos, Fusco explores a particular shift in the role of women in the era of global warfare. The 59-minute video follow the artist and six women enrolled in a training workshop led by Team Delta, a group of retired US military interrogators, and designed for people in the private sector who want to learn from them various techniques for extracting information. In a one-day immersion in a simulated reality the women are introduced to interrogation from the point of view of the prisoner: the group is ambushed, captured and subjected to harsh treatment from ex-military personnel playing guards and hostile interrogators. The video shows how interrogators combine theatrical tricks with physical and mental stress to extract information from their prisoner. The digital photos document Fusco’s street performance in Sao Paolo in the fall of 2005. Inspired by her own experiences as a prisoner with Team Delta, she assumed the role of a military policewoman and staged a scene in front of the US consulate together with 50 drama students acting as her prisoners.
In conjunction with the exhibition, MC will publish a limited edition illustrated book by Fusco, a field guide for female interrogators that draws on materials from actual instruction manuals issued by the CIA and the US military.

Raul Zamudio hosts Art After Dark LIVE @ DIVA, Digital and Video Art Fair, March 9, 7:00-11:00pm, rm 408 Embassy Suites, 100 North End Avenue, Downtown Manhattan
Art After Dark is a talk show that speaks many languages, both literally and metaphorically. Part Charlie Rose meets Graham Norton by way of the analyst’s couch, Andy Warhol’s TV (1982) and Lucio Fontana’s Television Manifesto of the Spatial Movement (1952), Art After Dark serves more than a platform for exchange between host and guests and interviewer and interviewees. As hosted by independent curator Raul Zamudio, Art After Dark is an exhibition of sorts in real time that appropriates the talk show format. It inverts the traditional function of the exhibition as repository of art objects in which a narrative is conveyed through curatorial selection, placement and so forth. For if the art object is an extension of the artist then the inverse must be as true as well: now the artwork manifests through the artist. Thus, Art After Dark reconfigures the interview genre as performance art in which dialogue, communication and interaction are framed symbiotically as artistic enunciations.
Raul Zamudio is curator-in-residence at The Artist Network and has been a visiting critic/curator at Royal College of Art, London; Ewha Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea; Szamzie Space, Seoul, South Korea; Tampere Polytechnic, Tampere, Finland, and FRAME, Helsinki, Finland, and Quetzalli and the Oaxaca Museum of Contemporary Art, Oaxaca, Mexico. This summer Raul will be critic/curator-in-residence at Art Omi International Artists Colony, Ghent New York . As a writer, Raul has published extensively on contemporary art in books and museum and gallery exhibition catalogs and is corresponding editor for Art Nexus; correspondent for Flash Art; and contributor to Contemporary. Other publications have appeared in PART, Zingmagazine, TRANS, Estilo, Journal of the West, Tema Celeste, Art/Culture Seoul, Art Notes, Bridge and Framework: the Finnish Art Review. As a curator, Raul held the position of Curatorial Director at White Box, NY, NY from 2003-2005 where he curated solo exhibitions on Dennis Oppenheim, Javier Tellez, Miguel Angel Rios, Bik van der Pol, the group show on Finnish art titled Under Your Skin and was co-curator of BQE and Democracy Was Fun. As an independent he has also curated numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally. His most recent project abroad was as co-curator of an official 2005 Venice Biennial Collateral Event titled Poles Apart, Poles Together.

On the cover of the latest issue of LEONARDO JOURNAL,is Sonya Rapoport’s image from her inside article, DIGITIZING THE GOLEM: From Earth to Outer-space. In the article, covering five decades of her art production,she provides a personal history in a scientific context that leads her from painting and abstract expressionism to computer assisted interactive installations and webworks. The Golem, her self-described avatar, is used as a means to question and explain the autobiographical evolution of her iconography, choice of media, and style. Her journey includes the influences on her interdisciplinary art expressions which are intermittently treated parodically, humorously, and mystically.

I make another appearance in that fine British magazine, the “Fortean Times,” with an article on the unusual friendship between Charles Fort and Theodore Dreiser, complementing some rare photos of Fort and his wife from Dreiser’s papers.
