To be without a passport or to have the wrong kind of documentation, be it too much or not enough is to be unsafe. To be without a passpott is to lack the state’s assurance you are who you are. To be without a passport is to be unable to travel, to flee , to escape. The incorrectly or insufficiently documented live in a state of being, a state layered with possibilities -not any of them good.
“The New Rome” by Eugene Rodriguez is beautiful. From a distance, the work gleams richly. Its fold of silk organza are soft, their embroidery finely worked. The robes are floating on air. How lovely. Draw nearer. It becomes apparent the artist has locked the fabrics into place upon a support of metal, an armature. Look again. Now the viewer can see the embroidery fixes Exacto blades onto the silk. Beautiful and horrifyingly dangerous. Rodriguez has added a tri-lingual warning (French, English, Spanish): “No Barbarians Allowed.” War or Peace? What image shall the state present to the rest of the world?

The Philoctetes Center presents the second in a series of exhibitions related to its roundtable dialogues on creativity and the imaginative process. Employing images of domestic objects, childhood belongings, and evocative spaces, each artist’s work calls to mind aspects of the interior world that comprise the palette of the psychoanalytic endeavor. A series of roundtables marking the 150th anniversary of Freud’s birth and addressing the current and future significance of psychoanalysis runs concurrently. A young woman grieves her mother’s death by breeding roses. Upon receiving the bequest of a box of rose plants, the distraught young woman seeks solace in an untended garden on Houston Street. Under moonlight and stars, she encounters a plaque to Fred Rosensteil, the son of Dutch Jews who perished in the Holocaust, who sublimated his grief into guerilla gardening that spanned three decades. The play is a magical journey scooping into the dirt of New York City to discover history and scooping out her own heart.

liveartwork DVD issue 2, April 2006 Now Released!
April sees the release of the second issue of liveartwork DVD, a unique publication which showcases contemporary, international performance art work. With a new issue published every three months, liveartwork DVD aims to present an overview of contemporary performance art practice to an international audience.
The second issue features seven diverse artists, ranging from Boris Niesloney, who for over 20 years has been a key figure in European performance art, to These Horses, an emerging performance theatre group working in London and Berlin. Russian artist Alexei Shulgin performs alongside a 386 DX PC computer in the first ever cyberpunk rock band and The Valie Export Society make playful recreations of Export’s seminal early works.
Issue 2, features work by Joshua Sofaer (UK), Boris Nieslony ( Germany), Alexei Shulgin ( Russia), Grace Surman (UK), Kate McIntosh (New Zealand/Belgium), These Horses (UK/Germany) and The Valie Export Society ( Estonia).

Carlyle Reedy is a poet, performance artist and collagist/painter. She has performed her work at prestigious venues, notably the Royal Court in London. Early on she worked in arts ventures such as Jim Haynes’ Arts Lab, IRAT, Electric Centre (Haarlem, Holland) etc an d later at Franklin Furnace (NY), Chisenhale (London). Peter Biddulph Gallery in London presented her one woman exhibition in 1986. Recently her work was included in the MOMA exhibition Out of Actions (catalogue published by Thames and Hudson). Her poetry has appeared in Out of Everywhere (RSE), PAJ 61 (John Hopkins), Other (Wesleyan Poetry) and the Oxford Anthology of 20th Century British and Irish Poetry edited by Keith Tuma. The Arts Council purchased five collages in 1999. Her poetry has appeared in out of everywhere (RSE), PAJ 61 (Johns Hopkins), Other (Wesleyan Poetry), Etruscan Reader 4. Her collection of poems Obituaries and Celebrations was published by words worth books in 1996. Carlyle’s latest publication of poetry is published
by Etruscan Press. The art historian and curator Guy Brett has written extensively on the work of Carlyle Reedy,including in his latest publication,Carnival of Perception
(inIVA)2005.

The communication between earth and outer-space begins as a USA helicopter from the Afghanistan war morphs into an international ring of Al Qaeda terrorist cells. The cells become embryonic stem cells that are differentiated into body parts. Choice of a body part propels its related altruism into outer-space to be shared with an alien.

In this book, photographer and critic Martha Rosler traces the ways in which art draws its meaning from within its social and political frameworks. The book’s two artworks and a related essay exemplify and investigate the social embeddedness of art. They suggest how changing times and changing circumstances affect not only the form and meaning of photography but also its effects on its audience, including its ability to activate its viewers.
The artwork, the restoration of high culture in chile (1977) is a photo and text work that, in fictionalized form, examines the various degrees of political anesthesia and moral corruption implied by a successful adaptation to unquestioned and abstract notions of high culture. It shows how a political crisis can reveal the way types of cultural production appeal to sharply divided audiences and does so in part by adopting a hybrid form of enunciation, between short story and political tract. The photo-and-text work The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems (1974-1975) throws into question the ability of contemporary urban photography to continue the historical potential of social documentary photography. Its accompanying work, “in, around, and afterthoughts,” written especially for the first edition of 3 works, is a fully developed critical essay in which this question is explored more systematically. In this work, Rosler attempts to develop criteria tha t could define contemporary photographic activities as meaningful social and aesthetic practices.
Included in the 2006 edition of 3 works is an additional critical essay that describes the conception and evolution of the original book. In “afterword: a history” Rosler also revisits issues raised by 3 works, explores debates within photographic practice from the time of the book’s original publication in 1981, and further refines her views on the history of documentary practices and the enduring significance of these forms of expression.
The Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design was established in 1972 as a vehicle to publish books by and about leading contemporary artists.
Between 1972 and 1987, twenty six titles by such artists as Michael Snow, Steve Reich, Gerhard Richter and Yvonne Rainer were published. Re-launched in 2002, the NSCAD Press will once again establish the university as a source for the publishing of primary documents and scholarly works in the fields of contemporary art, craft and design.

A reception will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Saturday, May 6th, at Printed Matter, 195 Tenth Ave. (at 22nd), in honor of the reissue (by Ugly Duckling Presse, Brooklyn) of the French Lettrist Gabriel Pomerand’s “Saint Ghetto of the Loans,” a legendary but little-seen masterpiece of book art from 1950. Michael Kasper, the translator, will give a brief talk on the movement and author, with excerpts, newly Englished, from another work of Pomerand’s, “The D. Man”, about his mid-Sixties experiments with LSD.

This ninety-minute screening features recent and newly commissioned pieces of video art that look at “reckless behavior” as both a strategy and a theme. The program surveys several broad categories of work, including artists performing reckless or seemingly dangerous actions on camera; artists using guerilla tactics to stage public interventions that place them in physical or legal jeopardy; and works that use explosive visual and narrative styles to portray social recklessness in both fictional and documentary modes. “Reckless Behavior” features works by Cathy Begien, Nao Bustamante, Jeff Cain, Patty Chang, Tom Dale, Harrell Fletcher, Adam Frelin, Kate Gilmore, Mike Long and Jesse Sugarmann, Laurel Nakadate, and Joe Sola; the program premieres newly-commissioned works by Juneau/Projects and Joanne Jones, and by Ryan Trecartin. This screening is organized by Glenn R. Phillips, research associate and consulting curator, Department of Contemporary Programs and Research at the Getty Research Institute.
