Steve Kurtz, FF Alumn, In Memoriam

Critical Art Ensemble’s Steve Kurtz, May 8, 1958-November 12, 2025

Steve Kurtz was an American professor, writer, artist, and activist, a member of the well-known tactical media collective, Critical Art Ensemble.

Today, November 12, 2025, he completed his final mission on Earth, which was to leave humanity the legacy of his many creations and cultural struggles.

He passed away peacefully at home, accompanied by his partner and wife, Lucia Summer.

They had been battling cancer for years.

Always with his characteristic good humor, he did not let the diagnosis get him down and managed to prolong his life as much as possible.

Alongside loyal friends, such as Steven Barnes, and integrated into networks of partners and collaborators worldwide, he produced a body of work that is a reference in the history of art-rebellion.

In his last year of life, he still gathered the strength to write the newest book from the Critical Art Ensemble, in which he delivers his final blow to the neoconservative movement in the USA.

He lived and died fighting.

His memory will continue to inspire new generations.

Let’s Think About Food Care Café

a free event created and hosted by Lois Weaver with Kim Ima and La Mama

Tuesday November 18, 5pm-7pm

Community Arts Space at La Mama

74A East 4th Street. New York, NY 1000

Thanksgiving is meant to be a season for giving thanks but it mostly always seems to be about the FOOD.  Right now, in November 2025, there are some reasons to be grateful, even joyful- growing communities of resistance, energetic and youthful new movements, small victories and large solidarities. And yet it is still about the FOOD, not about the bounty of food on our Thanksgiving tables but about the FOOD INSECURITY across our entire country.

Please join us on November 18 for the Let’s Think About Food Care Café where we will sit together in an atmosphere of care and think about how to nourish those around us who are hungry.

Here’s how:

-Show up from 5-7pm on 18 November

-Bring a friend or neighbor who might enjoy the company

-Bring donations for local food banks and maybe some refreshments to share

-Share ideas for Mutual Aid

Most importantly, come spend some time with some people who care.

A Care Café asks us to turn up as we are, with no specific agenda, expectation, or discussion topic, simply asking the question: How can we maintain an attitude of care in an uncaring world?

Set up like a conventional café with small tables and chairs, the Care Café acts as a temporary venue for community and conversation with some simple table activities set up within a framework of care. Just by entering the room, we acknowledge something of our own needs in the present moment and our desire to give and receive care.

You can RSVP with La Mama to let us know you are coming, but you can drop in anytime between 5-7 pm.

An Incomplete Haunting

Curated by Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger

601Artspace, 88 Eldridge Street, NYC

Nov 22, 2025 – Feb 22, 2026

Please join us for the opening reception on

Friday, Nov. 21, from 6-8pm.

An Incomplete Haunting gathers research-driven and place-based works across photography, video, sculpture, installation, sound, reenactment documentation, and ephemera. Together, these projects demonstrate how art can confront and illuminate the past, making visible stories and perspectives that have long been obscured by official narratives. In an era of historical denialism, censorship, book bans, and the criminalization of dissent, the exhibition foregrounds narrative craft as a tool for preserving polyvocal memory and resisting institutional erasure.

The exhibition’s title draws inspiration from Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States and Kevin Young’s The Grey Album: On the Blackness of Blackness, especially Young’s notion of “shadow books”—histories that haunt the ones we hold. In this spirit, An Incomplete Haunting uses contemporary art and exhibition-making to highlight the vital role that creative practice plays in (re)shaping historical interpretation and memory.

Quentin Crisp is the author of the classic coming-of-age memoir The Naked Civil Servant. The award-winning film version of the book, starring John Hurt, made him an instant international celebrity. In 1981, at the age of 72, Quentin Crisp relocated to New York City, bringing his familiar wit and eccentricity with him. He charmed everyone, became “the face of a modern rebel,” and delighted us with his inimitable grace, wit, and genius. Quentin Crisp died on the eve of touring his show in Manchester, England, on November 21, 1999.

Conceived and presented by Mr. Crisp’s estate executor, Phillip Ward, “An Evening of Quentin Crisp: A Celebration of Life in His Own Words” invites you to a night of celebration at the Gene Frankel Theatre to commemorate the legendary life of Quentin Crisp on the 26th anniversary of his passing. Special guests will read excerpts from Mr. Crisp’s books, followed by three short films by filmmaker Adrian Goycoolea (Mr. Crisp’s great-nephew), as well as works by Steven Watson and Phillip Ward. A rare screening of the Alternative Queen’s Message will also be featured.

GUEST READERS: Jennifer Barton, Tom Cardamone, Cynthia Carr, Peter Cramer, Flame, Peter Hale, Pauline Park, Michèle Goycoolea Pratt (Mr. Crisp’s great-niece), Jack Waters, and Emanuel Xavier.

Join us for “An Evening of Quentin Crisp: A Celebration of Life in His Own Words” at the Gene Frankel Theatre at 24 Bond Street on Tuesday, November 25, at 7:00 p.m. FREE! Donations to The Gene Frankel Theatre and 24 Bond Arts Center are appreciated.

I am very pleased to share this beautiful news of nomination for the CALQ Artist of the Year Award in Chaudière-Appalachian, alongside Marie- lve Fréchette and David Jacques. 2025 seems to be a nomination year for me and I am touched and grateful!

“Visual artist, Anne-Marie Proulx creates poetic universes where photography, text and installation dialogue to explore our connections to territory and life.” His work, spread in Quebec and internationally, is distinguished by a collaborative approach, sensitive reflection and sustained radiation.

Anne-Marie Proulx is nominated for the richness of her artistic approach, where community engagement, critical thinking and territory exploration merge into a remarkable contemporary work. “

FULL PROGRAMME LINK

New York, New York. November 8, 2025. – Pioneer arthouse film presenter Bronx World Film hosts the finale of “A Night at La Nacional,” the nine-month-long pilot of a monthly world cinema and arts event that has brought new spark to downtown Manhattan’s cultural life at La Nacional – Spanish Benevolent Society on West 14th Street with a tribute on November 18 to Tribeca Lab, a freewheeling space run out of the basement of 79 Leonard Street which from the 90s to the early naughts and beyond – epilogue to a most amazing chapter in New York City history – bred a generation of multitalented performers, artists, dancers, writers, filmmakers and creatives still collaborating and still making their mark in their respective fields.

At the center of the celebration stands Tribeca Lab Co-Founder and Artistic Director Alfonso Ramos, Esq., actor, promoter and human rights lawyer, sadly departed in 2024. Bronx World Film and Executive Director Walter Krochmal — an alumnus of Tribeca Lab like so many others in the evening’s lineup – will honor his immeasurable contribution to the lives of so many which in turn inspires our model, one in which creative spirits can continue to develop their singularities in a radically changed world.

Performances include Al’s Lear; Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven with students from The New School for Leadership and the Arts in The Bronx directed by Hossein Fassa; music by Nick Colt, Mercantillers and others, and three shorts by Tribeca Lab. Doors open 5:30 for a mixer and cash bar. Screenings at 8:15 with Q & A after. Bronx World Film thanks La Nacional, among the city’s oldest non-profits in its 100th year at its present location as the last vestige of Manhattan’s “Little Spain,” dubbed “a hidden gem” by Daily News, for its continuous support over fourteen years and for the unique opportunity of presenting this series.

Admission to “A Night at La Nacional” is free. Cash bar only. Donations accepted.

16. Jian Yi, at Center for Performance Research, Brooklyn, Dec. 11-12

I am so happy to invite you to the premiere of my epic-live art work ‘Cloud States’ I’ve been hard at work on since then, showing at CPR (Center for Performance Research) in Brooklyn on December 11 / 12 at 7pm

Cloud States is a tender, visually-rich meditation on loss / love and self-identity, inviting audiences to reflect, feel, and rediscover what connects us across borders and experience.

Interwoven by choreography sculpted in immersive light atmospheres to create a sensory experience questioning the boundaries between dream / memory and reality – the work features a talented ensemble of trans-national performers in a powerful combination of video art, dance, autobiographical / personal storytelling and immersive lighting / FX.

I look forward to sharing this with New York audiences – this labour of my love, which explores relevant socio-cultural themes in personal migrant storytelling / oral histories, reflecting on the turbulent present times, and processes of our collective grieving and survival.

Thank you again and hope to see you there!

With all good wishes,

Jian Yi
