Adrianne Wortzel, Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art recipient 2003-2004 will show and tell StudioBlue, the telerobotic theater she developed and directs at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, as well as her current work-in-progress there: Eliza Redux, a theatrical scenario in the form of psychoanalytic sessions. The sessions unfold via real-time streaming of a physical robot equipped with an interactive conversational computer program in the tradition of Eliza. Patients visiting the web site will control the robot’s motion, and video camera pan, tilt, and zoom in real time. Transcripts of sessions will be archived for future examination. Ms. Wortzel will be joined by James Cruickshanks, a graduate student at Cooper Union whose thesis project was the development of GRASP, a performance control software. Graduate students in Professor Zhang Ga’s Collaboration Studio class at Parsons created the web interface for this project.
Adrianne Wortzel’s work explores historical and cultural perspectives through new technologies. She creates fictive webworks, and interactive robotic and telerobotic theatrical scenarios in both physical and virtual networked environments. Works include Eliza Redux, a robot offering interactive online psychoanalytic sessions; Camouflage Town, a telerobotic installation exhibited in Data Dynamics at The Whitney Museum of American Art (Spring 2001); Sayonara Diorama (1998), intermingling human and robotic
actors who tell the tale of a fictive second Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin thirty years after the first; The Ship’s Detective, in Cooper Union’s Technoseduction exhibition (1997); The Hidden Archivists at the Anchorage at Creative Time’s Art in the Anchorage (1997); NoMad is An Island at Ars Electronica97 (Linz, Austria); and Tableaux Vivant Dan Une Monde Parfait in Areale 99 (Baitz, Germany). As a recipient of the Artists-in-Labs-Award, she will be an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Zurich Artificial Intelligence Lab from July through December 2004. Wortzel is a Professor of Communication Design at New York City College of Technology, CUNY; an instructor in the Instructional Technology Certificate Program of the CUNY Graduate Center; and an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where she is also the Director of StudioBlue, an arena for telerobotic performance productions.

“Robot Works” by Chico MacMurtrie, Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works (ARW; http://www.amorphicrobotworks.org), will present work from his recent retrospective exhibition of over 100 machines, recently shown at this year’s European Cultural Capital exhibition in Lille, France. This exhibition included the large-scale Robotic Landscape, Cave of the Subconscious, Too Big Dog Monkey, Floaters, and Skeletal Reflections. MacMurtrie and ARW have toured around the world realizing this society of machines in various performance and installation formats., MacMurtrie will discuss the evolution of his work, recent projects, and the use of vision technology to create ongoing interactive performance in an installation setting.
Chico MacMurtrie was born in New Mexico in 1961, and currently resides in New York. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Arizona and an M.F.A. in New Forms and Concepts from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has been awarded four grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for Interdisciplinary Artists (individual grants in 1988, 1990 and 1991; a collaborative grant in 1993 for the premiere of Trigram: A Robotic Opera , which was staged at Theatre Artaud in San Francisco). Trigram was a feature story on The Next Step program on the Discovery Channel. He was a Performing Artist in Residence at the Exploratorium in San Francisco in 1989, and in 1990 received the San Francisco Bay Guardian Goldie Award. In 1991, MacMurtrie completed a month long tour of Europe, funded by an Arts International grant. During that time he traveled and performed in Czechoslovakia and presented an award winning performance at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, which appeared on television in Munich, Berlin, and Dortmund, Germany. The tour ended with performances in Amsterdam and an interactive installation at the Kijkhuis, in Den Haag, Holland. A retrospective exhibition of over 100 machines was shown at the
2004 European Cultural Capital exhibition in Lille, France.

Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to announce a book signing to celebrate the publication of Agnes Denes’ Poetry Walk : Reflections Pools of Thought. The signing will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2004 from 5 7 PM at Printed Matter, 535 West 22nd St. between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Agnes Denes is an artist and scholar of international renown. One of the originators of Conceptual Art, Denes has investigated the physical and social sciences, philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, psychology, poetry, and music and transformed her explorations into unique works of visual art. Denes was one of the first artists to be involved with the relationship between science and art and was also a pioneer of Ecological Art. One of her best-known works is Wheatfield‹A Confrontation, a two-acre wheat field she planted and harvested in downtown Manhattan in 1982 to address questions of human values and misplaced priorities. Denes has also created mathematical forests in Europe and Australia. She has shown her work in over 350 exhibitions, written four books and holds a doctorate in fine art.
Poetry Walk : Reflections Pools of Thought documents a site-specific project completed by Denes at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville and now in the permanent collection of the University¹s Art Museum. Twenty granite stones, shaped to resemble those excavated from ancient sites, were carved with poetry and other writings by contemporary and historical artists, writers, and philosophers from around the world. Approximately four feet by five feet each, the stones were embedded in a stretch of lawn near the University’s Rotunda. The writings, selected by Denes with the help of students from a range of departments in the University, reflect her concern with bringing the past to bear on the present. “Human values expressed with a passion create a lasting impact‹they enlighten, motivate and inspire young minds,” she has said. “By uniting different times and disciplines separated by specialization, a powerful new overview appears.”
Long interested in art that affirms a commitment to the future well being of ecological, social and cultural life on the planet, Denes included her own 1970 manifesto in Poetry Walk as relevant to her practice today as it was when she first articulated it. Poetry Walk : Reflections Pools of Thought presents full page color photographs of every stone in the project along with transcriptions of their texts, a foreword by Museum Director Jill Hartz, an artist¹s statement and an artist’s biography.
Poetry Walk : Reflections Pools of Thought, is published by the University of Virginia Art Museum Press, Charlottesville, and is priced at $19.95 A special edition, signed by the artist is available for $50. BALTIC presents a major exhibition by artist Susan Hiller. Constituting the most wide-ranging survey of Hiller’s work in a career which spans over 30 years, the exhibition combines many of her most prominent installations alongside a major new BALTIC commission, Clinic.
Presented for the first time in BALTIC’s Level 4 art space, Clinic is an audio installation which takes as its subject matter the personal accounts of individuals who believe they have had a Near Death Experience. Hiller’s interest does not lie in advocating or disputing the anecdotal or scientific evidence for or against the reality of these experiences, but in regarding them as social facts.
Clinic incorporates a remarkable archive of vivid stories from many individuals across a wide range of cultural backgrounds, which might be metaphors, misperceptions, myths, delusions or the truth. This solo show also includes a number of the artist’s major works, from the colour projection Magic Lantern, 1987, through to more recent installations which investigate paranormal phenomena – Wild Talents, 1997 and Witness, 2000.
Recall: Selected Works 1969-2004 is guest curated by James Lingwood.
The exhibition is accompanied by a major new publication, co-produced by Museu Serralves, Porto and Kunsthalle Basel and edited by James Lingwood. Exhibitions of Susan Hiller’s work will be shown in these venues from November 2004 – January 2005 and February – April 2005 respectively.
