Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-1985 is the most comprehensive survey to date of the artist’s work. It places Mendieta’s art in a broader, international context and examines her life and development as an artist. The exhibition, organized by Olga Viso, Deputy Director, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, premieres at the Whitney Museum of American Art on July 1, launching a four-venue national tour.
Ana Mendieta: Earth Body includes more than 100 works and traces the artist’s development from the early performance-based works she made as a student at the University of Iowa, where she was grounded in the conceptual and body-oriented practices of the 1960s and 1970s. She then went on to create independent sculptures and objects in the early 1980s made with fragile, earthen materials. The objects on view include photographs, drawings, sculptures, film, and, sequenced slide projections documenting early performance works and time-based actions in nature.
Rooted in nature and in the body, Mendieta’s art was inflected by personal identity and femininity, and distinguished by the singular hybrid form she created. Her earth-body works, or Silueta Series (silhouette series) — sculptural interventions in the landscape that inserted her naked figure (or its outline or contours) in a natural setting — fused aspects of Conceptual, process, performance, body, feminist, and land art.
Embracing the aims of feminism, Mendieta quietly subverted the monumental gestures of male land artists such as Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer by working at a human scale in the landscape. Critical of the exclusion of artists of diverse races and ethnicities from the art world and early feminism, she vehemently asserted her own trans-cultural identity. Borrowing freely from a variety of cultural traditions throughout the world, she frequently appropriated symbols and aspects of the ritual practices of ancient and indigenous cultures of the Americas, Africa, and Europe in her art. While abnegating all forms of boundaries, Mendieta’s cipher — the naked female form that performs in the studio, merges with the landscape, is etched on a leaf, or is burned into the soil or a tree trunk — remained at the center of her production.
THE EXHIBITION
Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-1985 was organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. The exhibition is made possible by The Henry Luce Foundation, the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation, and The Judith Rothschild Foundation. Initial research was supported by Craig Robins and a Curatorial Research Fellowship from the Getty Grant Program. Additional support for the exhibition catalog was made possible through the generosity of Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and Isabel and Ricardo Ernst.
Following its presentation at the Whitney, the Mendieta exhibition will be on view at the Hirshhorn from October 14, 2004 through January 6, 2005; the Des Moines Art Center from February 25 through May 22, 2005; and the Miami Art Museum from October 7, 2005 though January 15, 2006.

Realizing a lifelong dream, Harley Spiller, FF Alumn, — a museum and education professional better known to many New Yorkers as Inspector Collector — will fill 45 feet of glass-topped museum cases with his singular group of collections. “Thousands of objects from dozens of different collections will be exhibited together for the first time ever in a museum,” says the Inspector. “I’m showing scissors you won’t believe, and hundreds of funky pencils, including some that may have belonged to George Washington we’re borrowing from the New York Historical Society.”
Other objects of intrigue include spoons like a ceremonial Native American potlatch ladle that belonged to Andy Warhol and 10 different spoons NOT used for eating. Remember the original blue Metrocards? Inspector Collector’s got ’em. “Plus purple, green, and orange ones too; and subway, bus and train tokens from across the U.S.A.” The list goes on and on.
Renowned artists Lady Pink and Smith will paint a trompe l’oeil newsstand displaying newspaper stand paperweights from the 1950s. There will be “MAPETERIA,” a room where adults are not allowed, not even peeking (once inside, kids inspect a giant collection of unique maps and think about “who draws the lines around the countries?”) There’s also the “CHOOSEUM,” a hands-on workspace where visitors make projects with a golconda of supplies. 6 mystery objects will challenge kids to make correct guesses and win prizes from the Museum shop.
“Junior Collectors Day,” will be held on October 10th, when kids of all ages are invited to exhibit collections at the Museum. Exhibition cases and tables will be spread throughout the galleries and children and adults will share their prized possessions with the general public. “Inspector Collector’s Cool Stuff” will be held in the Queens Museum’s ArtZone, a hands-on gallery for children made possible by Emigrant Savings Bank.

The James Hart Gallery is pleased to present artists Bobbe Besold and Thelma Mathias in a two person exhibition of their work. The show opens Friday July 9 from 6PM to 8PM and runs through July 23, with performances on Friday the 23rd from 7Pm -8PM by the artists. The multifaceted Besold and Mathias utilize language and conceptual ideas in their work, with their messages occasionally inter-weaving and playing off each other.
Mathias, a mid-career, conceptual sculptor, came to Santa Fe less than three years ago after establishing herself firmly in the avant-garde NYC art world, with numerous international exhibitions to her credit as well. In this, her first major Santa Fe showing, is the DreamSpace installation, which spans eighteen feet across the gallery, and is delicately suspended from the ceiling. One might find their own face or someone they know here among the random assortment of portraits and dreams. Mathias also offers other works here that deftly reflect her focus on cultural issues through a variety of materials in sculptural format.
Bobbe Besold is an artist/activist of diverse talents who has long been known for her passionate engagement with environmental and social concerns. Her art has taken such forms as photography, film, performance and public art (buses, billboards and murals). In this exhibition Besold will be presenting the early stages of her new installation work, Water Planet. This is cutting edge art & is a must see!!!!

Responding to the cacophonous sonic environment of the unfinished Big Dig Tunnel in Boston, Provincetown artist Jay Critchley has recorded and produced a surprising CD, Big Twig Tunnel Tapes ? Boston’s Big Dig Sings, resplendent with dance tracks, opera, ambient trance music, his signature rap song, Tunnel Vision, and a reflective composition entitled Rose Kennedy Greenway. The concept for the project is an ecological one, inspired by the tree?like footprint of this monument to the automobile, our gluttonous appetite for petroleum, and our war making to defend it. The CD is available on the web at www.bigtwig.org. Samples from the CD along with video documentation of the project will be presented at DNA Gallery, 286 Bradford Street, Provincetown on Friday, July 9 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm (508 487-7700).
The Provincetown CD release event will be held on Thursday, July 22 at the new studios of WOMR 92.1 FM at the Schoolhouse Center, 494 Commercial Street from 6:00 to 8:00 pm (508 487-2106) as a benefit for Outermost Community Radio. The Boston CD release event is scheduled for Thursday, July 15 at SalonSoto, 63 Melcher Street, on the corner of A Street in Fort Point Channel, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. (617 426-7686). “What can the sounds we find and the sounds we make deep inside the earth – inside
our buried past – tell us about ourselves and our relationship with the planet – in
this political convention-rich summer?” states Critchley, executive producer and
artistic director of the project.
Performers on Big Twig Tunnel Tapes – Boston’s Big Dig Sings include opera singers Rachel Smith and Stephanie McGuire, students with Donna Roll at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, singer Serena Andrews, viola player and singer Jonah Rapino and Critchley. Video and photography credits go to Roberto Ugalde, Lydia Eccles, Kathy Chapman, Timothy O’Keefe and Critchley. Jeffrey Alexander, Ryan Rooney, Andrew Sawtelle, Adam R. Wadsworth, Chris Warren and O’Keefe, all from Providence, Rhode Island, produced the mixed tracks – composed mostly from the field recordings in the tunnel. The web site and CD graphics design were created by O’Keefe, who is also associate executive producer and engineer of the project. The CD was produced at AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island and is partially funded by the LEF Foundation.

McMahon will present his HONORABLE DISCHARGE, a 25-minute monologue he
wrote and directed for performer Lance Gharavi. HONORABLE DISCHARGE
juxtaposes the police killing of a suicidal 15 year old with the
ongoing situation in Iraq. Using multiple voices and personas, quotes
from news reports, Henry IV, and Tom Sawyer, the piece examines
illusions of security and the use of force.
The evening will be shared with Greg Walloch.

p.s. During my struggle to meet the upcoming show’s tight deadline I somehow managed to poke a throbbing hole in my aura. I of course promptly arranged a session with Judith, a certified spiritual advisor, to have my cards read and my numbers counted. She phonated something about how my aura hole was gaping, and a little sore, but that it would heal after I paid her. On my way out I tipped her twenty bucks and handed her one of my Hand-Signed & Numbered Limited Edition Extra Cheese Coupons. She responded by saying she was lactose intolerant but then squeezed my pinky finger and ranted about the grave dangers of overworking myself in an attempt to hand make 100 savory bean & cheese burritos within 2 hours time during the show’s opening reception. According to Judith, at the exact moment the 100th burrito is consumed, I will buckle from the sheer weight of my cultural identity. And without warning, emotionally implode into my odious alter ego, an ambitious Latino conceptual artist named Sesos De Capitado, and spontaneously appropriate and recontextualize every past, present and future concept as his oeuvre and unleash a mind blowing concept to end all concepts! Thus and therefore, with his ‘concepto final’ embodied by an ornate hand gesture, Sesos De Capitado will conceptually render himself and several locations in Chelsea obsolete. So please, come eat a burrito on the 9th of July.
