Cheri Gaulke, FF Alumn, has received a COLA grant, a mid-career fellowship from the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. Gaulke will be creating a series of artists’ books based on text from previously created performance and videos. The work will be exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in May 2005.

Makor Gallery presents “Baalil/Evident”, a group exhibition dealing with the notion of place as a reflection upon the human condition. The artists participating in the show each refer to a specific site which is charged with personal drama. Due to the enigmatic narratives, the site functions both as a personal story and as a universal narative. The notion of “site” comes to evoke a wider notion of place. Erika Yeomans, FF Alumn, Announces Two Upcoming Screenings In New York And Los Angeles:

NEW YORK: ONE NIGHT STAND a special evening of award-winning films by Erika Yeomans. The Pioneer Theater will present a special feature program of her short films on Friday November 12 at 7 pm. The program includes three works featuring well-known artists and musicians including Casey Spooner (Fischerspooner), Kevin Hurley, Judy Elkan, Amy Galper, Ford Wright, Lizzy Yoder, Mot Filipowski, Magica Bottari, Pierre Foldes and Ira Glass (This American Life). The Pioneer Theater is located at 155 E. 3rd St. (@ Ave. A); Tickets: $9.00, $6.50 members;
IN SEARCH OF BAS JAN’S MIRACULOUS (Mixed Media, 1997, 39 mins, B&W/Color) is a humorous faux documentary on the true life misadventures of 1970’s Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader. The short is part PBS send-up, part Technicolor Biopic (with stolen bits of films from Lust for Life and Sound of Music among many other biopics). The project was featured on NPR’s THIS AMERICAN LIFE and screened in Europe and the US at various film festivals and museums. Voiceovers by IRA GLASS, LIZZY YODER of FISCHERSPOONER, FORD WRIGHT, JIM STRAHS, JUDY ELKAN and KEVIN HURLEY.
THE FORGERY (B&W, DV 2000, 26 mins.) is an award-winning parody of film noir. The script was comprised of hundreds of stolen one-liners and physical gestures from b-films and woven together into a comic narrative of double-crossing double-crossers. Featuring CASEY SPOONER of FISCHERSPOONER, AMY GALPER, FORD WRIGHT and MAGICA BOTTARI. Cinematography by award-winning filmmaker KEN KOBLAND (Wooster Group), Costumes HEATHER PRIEST (Sweet and Lowdown), Edited by DAVID KETTERLING, Original score by PIERRE FOLDES and Produced by AARON S. The Editions/Artists’ Book Fair just gets better and better. In a new, larger location, this unique Fair celebrates its seventh year as the premier showcase for contemporary publishers and book dealers exhibiting the latest in the medium of prints, multiples and artists’ books. Museum curators and collectors praise the event as pivotal within the publishing and contemporary art community.
Organized by Barbara Baruch of Brooke Alexander Editions, Susan Inglett of I.C. Editions, and David Platzker of Printed Matter, The Editions/Artists’ Book Fair;04 will take place at the Starett Lehigh Building in Chelsea located at 601 West 26th Street on the 14th Floor.
The opening reception, Thursday evening November 4, 2004 from 5 to 8 PM, is being organized as a benefit for Printed Matter, an independent not-for-profit organization founded to heighten the visibility of artists’ publications. General admission for the opening night is $40. A second special ticket is available for $150 and includes a print by Kiki Smith made for the occasion. The Fair is pleased to announce an opening night appearance by D.J. Spooky spinning artists’ recordings accompanied by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth on guitar.
Timed to coincide with the IFPDA Print Fair, The Editions/Artists’ Book Fair brings the history of printmaking begun at the Armory up to the minute. The Fair is also part of a citywide “Print Week” organized by the International Fine Print Dealers Association to promote the medium of prints through exhibitions and symposia.

InterseXions

“InterseXions: Queer Visual Culture at the Crossroads” is a two-day conference that will bring together visual artists, historians, critics and curators with an interest in queer arts, from a wide geographic and cultural spectrum. According to outgoing co-chair of the Queer Caucus, Maura Reilly, (Sackler Curator of Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum), the gathering “will provide a forum for the voices and images of contemporary practitioners in all media, and will spotlight contemporary developments in art-historical research, criticism and theory, museums and galleries.” The conference will also feature performance events, artists’ talks, and an associated exhibition.
“InterseXions” is intended to foster exchange of ideas about historical and contemporary arts among scholars, artists, curators, and other arts personnel, and to encourage cross-fertilization among disciplines and between writers and artists, theory and practice. Conference chair James M. Saslow (CUNY Professor of Art History and Theatre) notes the timeliness of the event’s focus: “The artistic and historical culture of the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer communities once again finds itself at a crossroads: established paths are worn away or petering out, while new challenges and contexts have opened up, and new directions must be charted.”

The award winning Minnesota artist, Billy X. Curmano, returns to the Twin Cities with his first solo CD on November 10th. The gala release party will be at the Black Dog Coffee & Wine Bar, Broadway and 4th, in Lowertown St. Paul. The show opens at 8 pm with selections from “Billy X: Solo Set” followed by a second set with some old friends around 9 p.m – if they show up.
“Billy X: Solo Set” was captured as a live studio recording with no over-dubbing or cheap tricks. It’s an unusual blend of folk jazz and blues inspired performances featuring dulcimer, guitar, harmonica, mbira, ocean harp, vibraphone and both the sung and spoken word. But, this CD is much more than just another audio recording. It’s a compilation that evolved over years of edgy performances living life as art.
Billy X. Curmano was buried alive for three days with the words to one of the selections etched on his tombstone. Others surfaced during his 2,000 plus mile Mississippi River swim from source to gulf as a performance and environmental statement. And several followed a 40 day fast in Death Valley during his life long search for the spiritual in art. The poetics of these performance are preserved in the “Billy X: Solo Set” CD and the accompanying chap book.
Billy X. Curmano has toured just about every way imaginable including 6,200 miles and 15 cities in 45 days on a Greyhound Bus. He’s intriqued audiences from the Dalai Lama’s World Festival of Sacred Music in Los Angeles and New York City’s famed Franklin Furnace to Austria’s Vienna Secession. He’s been a “Pick of the Week” in the L.A. Weekly and on the City Pages “A List”. He comes by his overall anti-war and social justice themes honestly. He’s witnessed the stupidity and horrors of war on two continents, the insides of a jail house looking out and the poverty that grips our world.
Billy X. shows up in concerts, on CD’s and on soundtracks including the 2002 “Hampton Award” winner “Swimming the Mississippi”. Journalists have dubbed him the “Court jestor of Southeastern Minnesota” and compared him to the likes of P.T. Barnum, Andy Warhol, Marcel DuChamp and even a happy otter.

Eric Bogosian, FF Alumn, will star as Satan in “the Last Days of Judas Iscariot,” a new play by Stephen Adly Guirgis, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and also starring Sam Rockwell as Judas. Performances start at NY’s Public Theatre on Feb 8, 2005.

Harley Spiller, FF Alumn, is exhibiting “Mr. T and Me by Inspector Collector” at The City Reliquary in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at the corner of Grand and Havemeyer Streets (L train to Lorimer station). The City Reliquary is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and this exhibition will continue through November 30, 2004. On Saturday, November 6, beginning at 4 pm, a party will be held, complete with Mr. T look-a-like and sound-a-like contests with prizes.
