We are witnessing now the suburbanizing of New York City, in which America finally swallows it. Ascendent “Developers” and transnational chain stores accomplished this, in their relentless destruction of our neighborhoods. But REALIZE that New York City is its neighborhoods.
The Starbucks invasion provides us with a kind of case study for crimes against communities. A company offering fake bohemian cafes enters a neighborhood…and then kills its host! The Starbucks Scouts SEEK OUT the hub of a community, where the hot talk takes place. They try to break the longtime proprietor’s lease, the one who cultivated this hot spot. Our invading company is quite open about this, in magazine interviews and PowerPoint presentations.
If they can’t send the old tenant packing they set up across the street and try to steal customers one by one. It’s no accident Starbucks set up shop across from Veselka’s on 2nd Avenue, or across from Galaxie Cafe up on 9th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen.
Knowing this, we move forward. We say now: NO STARBUCKS in the East Village and Williamsburg! We will offend, scandalize, and exorcize the Mermaid With No Nipples until the sweatshop bean counters realize this hostile territory is unprofitable, impossible to tame. Come to Church on February 23rd, 8pm at St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery and we will conjure what this will take. The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will move our hearts and bodies. Together, we will bump and grind the Buckheads out of our lives!

David Medalla, FF Alumn, will perform on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 7 p.m., in the Kufa Gallery, 26 Westbourne Grove, London W2 5RH, England. The occasion will be part of the launch of the book “Black Pop” by Shaheen Merali, which is published by Al Saqi Books of London. During the evening, Shaheen Merali will be in conversation with art critics Jean Fisher and David Beech. Shaheen Merali is a distinguished artist and curator of South Asian origin who is currently visual arts director at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. He was the co-founder of the Panchayat Arts Education Resource Unit, whose archive is currently held in the University of Westminster in England. David Medalla, founder and director of the London Biennale, will also participate in the inauguration on March 5, 2005, of the new premises of Museum MAN, on the top floor of the elegant Georgian house at 48 Rodney street in the centre of Liverpool, England. The inauguration will feature an exhibition entitled “Night Flight into Dawn Flight”, curated by Australian artist Adam Nankervis, founder and director of Museum Man. The exhibition will feature works in diverse media by a host of international artists on t aviary subjects and the themes of human and bird flight. David Medalla’s brush & pen drawing entitled “To Eroos, by Sappho, no. 1” is in the “Drawing” exhibition at the Parnassos Literary Society in Athens, Greece. An installation by David Medalla, featuring his gold-glazed ceramic shit-shaped incense burner and the archives of the University of Failure, is currently on view in Stephen Perkins’ WC Gallery at De Pere, near Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA.

The Americas Society announces the February 22 opening of Jump Cuts: Venezuelan Contemporary Art, Coleccion Mercantil. This exhibit features twenty-eight Venezuelan artists, including Arturo Herrera, Jose Antonio Hernandez-Diez, Javier Tellez, Carla Arocha, and several U.S. debuts. These works are drawn from the contemporary art section in Banco Mercantil’s extensive art collection in Caracas, Venezuela.
The concept of the exhibit draws on Jean Luc Godard’s use of the jump cut, a cinematographic term that refers to the editing of film shots causing a disjunctive and visible break in the film’s continuity, camera position, or time. The work of Venezuelan artists in this exhibit highlights dialogues with the past and present reflecting a break from Kinetic Art, and the idea of modernity as a concept in crisis. Thematic groupings within the exhibition are: Art-Thought, Necrophilia, The Modern Vernacular, and From the Object to its Representation. These are the jump cuts in the history of Venezuela’s visual art from the 1970s to the present.
Jump Cuts is organized by the Banco Mercantil and the Americas Society. It is curated by Tahia Rivero, Curator of the Coleccion Mercantil; Jesus Fuenmayor, Independent Curator; and Lorena Gonzalez I., Colección Mercantil, jointly with Gabriela Rangel, Director of Visual Arts, Americas Society.
A public reception will be held on February 24 in the Americas Society Gallery at 7:00 PM. A panel discussion related to the exhibition will be held at the Americas Society on April 19 at 7:00 PM. The panel discussion will be followed by activities and performances celebrating Venezuelan culture.
Jump Cuts represents the latest project in the Americas Society’s ongoing mission to promote understanding of the social, political, economic, and cultural issues that define and challenge the Americas today. The exhibit inaugurates the Americas Society’s 40th anniversary celebrations and runs through May 21st, 2005.

10. Guerilla Girls On Tour, West Hartford, CT, March 9, and Richmond, IN, March 11
The U.S. premiere of the new play Guerrilla Girls On Tour Show – the recovered herstory of women in world theatre as a wild theatrical romp through time — will take place at the Carol Autorino Center in West Hartford, CT on March 9th at 8PM immediately followed by a performance at the Goddard Auditorium at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana on March 11th at 7:30PM. Guerrilla Girls On Tour is an activist theatre collective that broke from Guerrilla Girls, Inc. in 2001 so that they could specifically create touring theatre and performances that would humorously address the lack of opportunities for women and explore a way to combine performance and visual art. The Theatre Girls, as Guerrilla Girls On Tour are known, create original comedies, vaudevillian-like street actions, edgy visual works and empowering residency programs that dramatize women’s history, advocate on behalf of women and artists of color and use a fresh, unique approach to address current political issues. In order to put the focus of their work solely on the topics they address, each member works under the name of a dead woman artist and performs wearing a gorilla mask. Did you know that a woman created Kabuki? Did you know that Anna Brenko began the tradition of extended rehearsal periods long before the Moscow Art Theatre? Did you know that less than 16% of all the plays produced in the US are written by women? I’ll be in a 13-Artist-Show opening this Thursday. Even though I won’t be there myself (I’ll be in Florida!) (I’ll say hi to the beach for you!), I heartily recommend you New Yorkers go. Pfiff is a really nice restaurant, and any event that Fritz & Germaine put on is bound to be a hell of a lot of fun. Good art, a house full of multi-culti vibrant intelligent people, and two-for-one drinks, what could beat that?

New York’s only theatre slam is hosted by the always spontaneous Galinsky Brothers and features two sets of theatrical action. Inspector Collector (a.k.a. Harley Spiller) has installed fifty items from his collection of Mr. T memorabilia, alongside the Jersey City Museum’s current exhibition, “The Superfly Effect.”
Inspector Collector will come to the Jersey City Museum on Saturday, March 5 at 1pm for a workshop on collecting. Families and Girl Scout troops are invited to attend and display their collections. This fun-packed day includes the airing of a video, a brief talk about collecting, hands-on collection consultation, certificates of participation, and creative activities and crafts based on the various collections displayed. Those wishing to display their collections should contact Sandy Martiny from the Jersey City Museum at 201-413-0303, ext 112 for table space. Girl Scouts who attend can work towards their Collecting Hobbies Badge.
