Dear friends & colleagues,
Check us out: Katherine Arnoldi & I will do a casual but pointed show & tell about our comics as agents for social change. It’s free, you can catch the Will Eisner exhibit, and what else were you planning for your Monday night? (Audience participation is encouraged but not demanded.) Hope to see you there, Sabrina

Monday, July 11th, 7pm
Women in Comics: Social Action Comics
Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art (MoCCA)
594 Broadway (Houston & Prince) Suite 401, NYC

Sabrina Jones (Prisoners of the War on Drugs, World War 3 Illustrated, Wobblies! A Graphic History of the Industrial Workers of the World) and Katherine Arnoldi (The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom, Thanks Mom, New York Civil Liberties Union) will talk about creating comics that enhance life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Can comics help overturn draconian drug laws? Can they guarantee teen moms their right to education? Katherine and Sabrina show how the unique charm of comics can be harnessed to shake up the social order. This program marks MoCCA’s continuing partnership with the New York chapter of Friends of LuLu, and our support of their “Women in Comics” lecture series. Free Admission to All!

KATHERINE ARNOLDI AND SABRINA JONES
REVEAL THE POWER OF
“SOCIAL ACTION COMICS” AT MOCCA JULY 11
Manhattan, announced June 27 – Two wonderfully talented and perceptive women help Friends of Lulu’s New York chapter and the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art proudly continue the Women & Comics discussion series bringing female professional comic book creators to Manhattan. On Monday, July 11 at 7 p.m., Katherine Arnoldi and Sabrina Jones headline an event called “Social Action Comics,” as they discuss
comic books that enhance life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Arnoldi (The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom; Thanks Mom; New York Civil Liberties Union) and Jones (Prisoners of the War on Drugs; World War 3 Illustrated; Wobblies! A Graphic History of the Industrial Workers of the World) reveal how the unique charm of comics can be harnessed to shake up the social order. Can comics help overturn Draconian drug laws? Can they guarantee teen moms their right to
education? A Q&A session and meet-and-greet period will follow the lively discussion.

This program marks MoCCA’s continuing partnership with the New York
chapter of Friends of Lulu. The New York chapter’s increasingly popular Women & Comics series is now part of MoCCA Mondays, the museum’s weekly event featuring something for everyone. Admission is free to the public, who can enjoy the museum’s remarkable retrospective tribute to Spirit creator Will Eisner as a bonus.
Friends of Lulu is a not-for-profit organization geared toward bringing more women and girls into comic books as professionals and readers, while acting as an advocate for current female creators. The New York chapter, made up of industry professionals and enthusiasts, is FoL’s most active chapter; its Web site is www.friends-lulu.org/ny and the national site is www.friends-lulu.org.
The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art’s purpose is the collection, preservation, study, education, and display of comic and cartoon art. It is located at 594 Broadway, suite 401, in Manhattan, between Houston Street and Prince Street. For more information and a map, the museum’s Web site is www.moccany.org. The museum is open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12 to 5 p.m., and is open for its special MoCCA Monday events every Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

3. Glenda Hydler, FF Alumn, at Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute

The Schlesinger Library/ Radcliffe Institute in Cambridge, Mass has recently acquired Glenda Hydler’s artist’s books. Ms. Hydler has produced approximately 130 books from 1972-1989. These books contain text on one side and photographs of the artist on the other (actually the photographs are taken by Hydler’s friends) The artist books are in loose-leaf binders and are color coded according to the year. The books were originally shown at 112 Greene Street Gallery and Franklin Furnance. This is the first collection of artist’s books to be acquired by the Schlesinger Library.

The books can be seen at Hydler’s studio up until July 22, 2005. Studio visits can be arranged by appointment only, after which time, the books will be housed at the Schlesinger Library. The books may then be loaned with the permission of the library and Ms Hydler for gallery showing and publication. The artist will also be available as a guest speaker.

Information about Hydler’s artist’s books will be accessible on the web through the Schlesinger Library.

Please feel free to contact Glenda Hydler to
