The Cobra Museum for Modern Art in Amstelveen is presenting the first European solo exhibition of Dolores Zorreguieta (Buenos Aires, 1965). The work of this New York artist is of an overwhelming visual force. The exhibition ‘Love/Romance’ consists of a broad variety of techniques including video, installations and drawings. Several works have been specially created by the artist with a view to the presentation in the Cobra Museum.
The introduction of the artist to the Netherlands is underpinned by an accompanying catalogue published by Waanders Uitgevers (written by the well-known filmmaker, art critic and curator Alberto Giudici and Martha Wilson, founder of the acclaimed New York Franklin Furnace). The publication also includes a dvd giving a detailed portrait of the artist. Filming for the dvd took place in the run up to the exhibition and shows Zorreguieta in her studio working on several projects. The AVRO is transmitting the documentary at the start of the exhibition in the program ‘Weeldekwartier’.

“Eyes Wide Open,” the American Friends Service Committee’s exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War will be on campus for public viewing, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The exhibit features a pair of boots honoring each U.S. military casualty, a field of shoes and a Wall of Remembrance to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict, and a multimedia display exploring the history, cost and consequences of the war. The installation is on the Alumnae House Lawn, between College and Fulton Streets, on Raymond Ave. This is near the Arlington business district. The rain space will be the Vassar Chapel. It is free and public.

Throughout November, PARTICIPANT INC becomes the stage for a series of durational actions and several evenings of live film, video, and performance including Derrick Adams, Ron Athey and Juliana Snapper (a SCOUT literary performance curated by Eileen Myles), Charles Atlas and Chris Peck, Vaginal Davis, Lovett/Codagnone, My Barbarian, Luther Price and Katharine Finneran (in conjunction with the Roberta Beck Memorial Cinema), Rafael Sánchez, Julie Tolentino, and Suara Welitoff and Thalia Zedek.
The programming of PARTICIPANT INC, a storefront alternative space on the Lower East Side, is greatly influenced by its urban history and context, and continues to integrate vibrant legacies of underground theater, drag aesthetics, club performance, live film, video, and music into its exhibition platform.
For PERFORMA 05, PARTICIPANT INC has invited participating artists to create new works, ranging from performing objects to durational and theatrical performances. These artists share an interest in sub-cultural genres that expand assumed limits of exhibition and performance formats.

Stefanie Trojan was born in 1976 in Neu-Ulm, Germany. From 1996 through 2003, she studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where she got 2000 the state examination for high school teaching in the arts. In 2001, Asta Gröting recommended her for the “Meisterschüler” honors program, 2003, Ms. Trojan graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with the “Diplom” (master of art) and received a scholarship from DAAD for a stay in New York.
Ms Trojan has been awarded with prestigious grants, for example in 2004 with the “Debutantenpreis” from the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Research and Art. and recently the „Kunst Stipendium“ Grant for Halle/Saale of the Werkleitzgesellschaft; the „Projektstipendium“ (grant to realize a project) of the city of Munich. Ms. Trojan has also received support from the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance, as well being Artist in Residence at the Parsons School of Design, New York, in 2004

Since ancient times, the labyrinth has represented an intricate maze, or a winding passage that is difficult to follow without getting lost . In fact, the idea of a circular, disorienting space and a place of entrapment was of crucial importance to the Ancient Greek understanding of a labyrinth. King Minos of Crete hired the legendary inventor and artisan Daedalus to design a labyrinth as a space of confinement for the Minotaur, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull.
From then onward, the cultural interpretation of the labyrinth has changed from being an imprisonment in ancient time to being a path to God in Medieval time, and a path to the center of the self in the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods. Today, the term is also related to hypertext, a maze-like database system with endless linkages of text, image, and sound . In a broader sense, a labyrinth can also signify circular of spiral patterns or meandering designs, as well as a complicated course of events. It symbolizes both the situations of confusion and puzzlement, as well as the sacred places for meditation or prayer. As a metaphor, the labyrinth relates to a life’s journey and one’s search for meanings, beliefs and values.
In the exhibition Labyrinths, the three artists–Jan Mancuska, Domenic McGill, and Alyson Shotz–engage those manifold aspects of labyrinth in their own respective ways. McGill’s work, Project for a American Century, is a large graphite drawing, measuring 7, 5 feet in height and 65 feet in length. Hung from the ceiling in a way that curls up into a labyrinthine form, the drawing is a composite of numerous smaller drawings and written words or phrases recording the historical and political events from 20th century American history starting with the Hiroshima bombing till the present.

LAPD CONSIDERS NETHERLANDS DRUG POLICY
LOS ANGELES POVERTY DEPARTMENT to perform “AGENTS & ASSETS” in Vrede van Utrecht Festival in The Netherlands.
Agents and Assets dramatizes a 1998 Congressional Hearing on crack cocaine. The occasion of the hearing is the CIA Inspector General’s report about allegations of CIA involvement in cocaine trafficking to fund the Nicaraguan Contras-at a time when Congress had expressly forbid such activities. At the heart of the issues addressed by Agents and Assets is the misuse of U.S. intelligence agencies by the executive branch of the government.
The entire Agents and Assets script is taken from the hearing transcript. Congressmen / women and the CIA Inspector General are played by on-the-ground veterans of the war on drugs. The lives of the cast members have been radically impacted by drug use, either because they were formerly addicted, or simply because they live in communities that have been devastated by drugs and the war against drugs.
Having the lawmakers played by people who have probably suffered from the policies enacted by the characters that they’re portraying is a brilliant coup de theatre; but more striking are the words themselves, which are reportedly quoted verbatim from the congressional record. What these words make clear regardless of who’s speaking them-is that the failures of the War on Drugs (committed by multiple administrations of both parties) are woefully being repeated today in the War on Terror.

14 LAPD cast members will travel to The Netherlands for three performances Nov. 30 – Dec 2. The performances are produced by the Vrede van Utrecht Festival, a multi-year Arts and Civic Affairs celebration of the signing of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Performances will be followed by a public discussion of current drug policy issues in The Netherlands. Discussion topics will include: zero tolerance “mini war on drugs” against drug swallowing arrivals from former Dutch colonies, Netherlands Antilles and Surinam; an examination of the current policy of providing housing and drugs to addicted hard drug users and a soft drug policy in which it’s legal to buy soft drugs but illegal to grow them; tensions within the European Union arising from Dutch drug policy; and Dutch participation in the US led “War on Drugs” in Afghanistan, where troops from the Netherlands are deployed. Initiators of these public conversations will include national and local politicians and public officials and staff from the Trans-National Institute, a drug policy institute based in Amsterdam. “Agents & Assets” has been performed in Los Angeles, Cleveland and Detroit. In fall 2006 “Agents & Assets” will be presented in Philadelphia and Baltimore.

This December the Sylvia Rivera Law Project will be auctioning off exciting works of art to raise funds to support the project’s fight for gender self-determination.
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) provides free legal services to low-income transgender communities and transgender communities of color. They also educate the public about trans oppression and support community organizing work that fights for the rights of their community. SRLP has assisted over 350 clients facing violence and discrimination in prisons, juvenile justice facilities, shelters, educational institutions and at the hands of the police since its inception in 2003. SRLP trains judges, health professionals, and other community organizations on how to provide respectful and affirming services. The most pressing issue faced daily at SRLP is the vast amount community members who are unable to access the most basic of services to meet the most vital of needs (such as shelter, health care, and education) because of rampant discrimination and violence.
The art auction will be held at the Orchard at 139 Orchard Street on December 4, 2005. There will be a opening preview of the works from 6-8pm on December 3 with a featured DJ spinning. The main event on Sunday, December 4 will start at 4pm with a preview and silent auction of over 30 small works from a variety of artists including local artists, artwork by SRLP clients, and renowned artists. The silent auction closes at 8:00pm, so don’t miss out on the bidding action. into “THE GIFT boutique,” by ALEJANDRO DIAZ, FERAL CHILDE, CHRISTINE
HILL, DEREK SULLIVAN, VEXED GENERATION, and JUDY WERTHEIN. As a
functioning store, “THE GIFT boutique” features a gift wrapping
station, a selection of books, CDs, magazines, wrapping paper, packing
tape, and clothing, all created by artists and designers whose play on
the “boutique” model belies their sensitivity toward commercial
practices, and in ways that both laud and critique this association.
The presentation in a commercial gallery not only reinforces how easily
these artists and designers assume corporate identities, but how each
redefine the parameters of the boutique to create personal exchanges
between themselves, their “products,” and the consumer.
THE GOODS
With his characteristic humor that marks the irony of corporate
advertising and its inability to translate into the everyday, ALEJANDRO
DIAZ will create outdoor signs directing potential customers to the
store as well as showcase a set of his ongoing cardboard signs for the
boutique. Alejandro Diaz ( New York) has exhibited at venues such as;
The Drawing Center, New York; Havana Biennial, Havana; Jersey City
Museum, New Jersey; Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn; and Jessica
Murray Projects, New York.
Brooklyn artist/designer duo Moriah Carlson and Alice Wu of FERAL
CHILDE, will debut their new line, HOMUNCULII, at “THE GIFT boutique.”
Select styles will be produced in a limited edition of six pieces each,
available to the public before the collection is officially released in
2006. Feral Childe has selected fabrics and prints exclusively for the
shop — this palette will not be offered again! In addition, customers
are invited to borrow outfits from the “Feral Childe Lending Library”
featuring specially chosen, unique pieces from past Feral Childe
performances. A limited edition CD box set of soundscapes created by
artist/musician Jena Kim for past Feral Childe collections will also be
available. Feral Childe ( New York) take a distinctly irreverent
approach to what you wear and how, creating clothes in conjunction with
installations and performances. Rooting around the urban wasteland for
discarded or unwanted raw materials, their creations range from
wearable and non-wearable clothing, often fantastical in nature, to
accessories, props and sculptures. Standing for the independent, the
adaptive and ever-changing, Feral Childe’s recent performative clothing
have been seen as part of Andrea Zittel’s High Desert Test Sites,
California and Index Magazine’s fall fashion spread, photographed at
Fritz Haeg’s geodesic dome in Mt. Washington, Los Angeles.
With “offices” in New York and Germany, CHRISTINE HILL has created a
roving project space called Volksboutique that offers various
strategies for doing what she has stated as, “Make the most of what
you’ve got!” Translating into a boutique in Kassel, Germany, to a
television test pilot program and to a home office in New York, Hill
assembles pieces from her “Products Division” including the
Volksboutique Care Package (2003), the The Volksboutique Handbag
(2000), and will debut a new multiple brought exclusively to customers
of “THE GIFT boutique.” Christine Hill ( New York/ Weimar) has exhibited
extensively in museums and galleries including; Documenta X, Kassel;
Watari Museum for Contemporary Art, Tokyo; MassMoCA, North Adams,
Massachusetts; Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York; and Deitch Projects,
New York. Hill has also worked on numerous projects in the public
realm, including commissions for The Public Art Fund and Creative Time.
Christine Hill is represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York.
Creating gift wrap and packing tape, DEREK SULLIVAN poses unspoken
questions everyone asks, like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice?” and “What Have I
Done to Deserve This?.” Literally emblazoned on the tape and paper
itself, Sullivan unpacks the ritual of gift giving and the larger, if
often unfulfilled, desires of consumer culture. Sullivan’s gift wrap
marks the first in an ongoing series of artist produced gift wrap
commissioned by RED-I Projects. Derek Sullivan ( Toronto) has exhibited
in venues such as; The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto;
Mercer Union, Toronto; Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto; and in
Berlin, Shanghai and Vancouver. Derek Sullivan is represented by
Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto.
As with all of their collections that blend fashion with its
social-political ramifications on the world-at-large through the
wearer, VEXED GENERATION will feature versions of their Wrap Liberation
and Ninja series of jackets, polar fleeces and related garments for
“THE GIFT boutique.” Intrigued by what these designers deem as the
“sartorial link between the idle rich and the idle poor,” irony abounds
in Vexed garments like Wrap Liberation, which echoes the restrictive
blankets used by the hungry and homeless while making an ironic
reference to French designer Christian Dior’s 1957 La Normandie, a
jacket without sleeves or armholes. Established in 1994 by Joe Hunter
and Adam Thorpe, Vexed Generation Clothing ( London) produce innovative
designs for urban street life, and have generated a worldwide client
base while continuing to produce unique garments that promote issues of
environmental and social significance. Concurrent to “THE GIFT
wrap/set/boutique,” Vexed Generation is exhibiting in “SAFE: Design
Takes on Risk, ” at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Fresh from her debut at inSite_05, JUDI WERTHEIN will showcase her
custom-designed and trademarked Brinco (2005) sneakers whose sales
support migrant workers crossing for the most part, the San
Diego/Tijuana border. The shoe design provides information and
materials that are relevant to and assists the ongoing plight of these
workers. “In a single object, ” writes Donna Cornwell, Werthein
“reveals the contradictions between fashion, competition in the
manufacturing industry, and migratory flows, themes that lie at the
heart of the dynamics of labor geography in today’s world.” Judi
Werthein (New York/Buenos Aires) has exhibited at venues such as;
inSite_05, San Diego; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; Parlor
Projects, Brooklyn, New York; La Fundacion Chinati, Marfa; Apexart, New
York; Center for Contemporary Art, Vilnius, Lithuania; and Kunstverein,
Cologne, Germany.

RED-I Projects, founded by New York-based curator and critic Ingrid Chu
in 2004, is an organization that assists artists in the creation of new
work in the public realm. Through collaborative efforts, it aims to
meet the needs of artists by acknowledging the various methods and

Continuing her ongoing exploration of word-image conjunctions creating visual poetry, the new exhibition uses the war poems of Stephen Crane (1871-1900), as a sounding board for new work. Rendering the poet’s words in scrawled lines and conjoining them with emblematic images, Spear has vandalized her own paintings by going back into older works with a graffiti artist’s intention— as a way of reiterating the message, as a warning, to the viewer.
“I coupled Crane’s words with my inability to turn off NPR in the studio. Even if the static made the words incomprehensible, I could tell by the calmness of the speaker’s voice when nothing too bad had happened”. Spear has incorporated the techniques of graffiti writers to hit her canvases with words and stencils—new symbols of surveillance and secrecy. “I take my messages from Crane’s cues. My big canvases become walls and I take a piece of them like a writer and I say, hey, this many years later, ‘We Patriots Slave’, and it’s not a tag but a bold loud comment. And I write ‘War Night’ because that’s how in the dark this all feels.”
The title of this comprehensive show of twelve paintings and works on paper—R E A D—works as a verb in the present and past tense and as a color or a political affiliation when spoken. Spear directs her viewers to encounter history in the present—the feeling is one of beauty in the cause of urgency. Through December 3.

If Rachel Carson were alive today, she would probably be pleased about the heightened public awareness of the environment and some of the protective legislation passed since she wrote Silent Spring. She would likely be much less satisfied with the ongoing battle between those who wish to preserve our natural environment and those whose efforts continue to contribute to its deterioration and destruction.
And just as Carson brought an investigative scientific eye to the problems of pesticides that she described in her groundbreaking book, an exhibition opening November 4 at the New York Academy of Sciences likewise casts a probing artistic look at some of the most critical environmental issues facing the world today. The exhibition, The Obligation to Endure: Art & Ecology Since Silent Spring, reflects one of Carson’s favorite maxims by the French biologist Jean Rostand : “The obligation to endure gives us the right to know.” [ read on]

STELLAR CAST OF ARTISTS CONTRIBUTE WORK FOR ABC ARTS AUCTION, ( Williamstown, MA) – The Greylock chapter of A Better Chance will hold its ABC Arts Auction on Friday, December 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
The work of over 43 artists, designers, architects, photographers, musicians, writers and performance companies will be auctioned.
Work by Jenny Holzer, Laylah Ali, Frank Gehry, Francesco Clemente, Michael Glier, Peggy Diggs, Albert Cummings, Carlos Jimenez, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Pentagram Design, Rosmarie and Keith Waldrop, Bludot Design, Susan Rothenberg and Anne Waldman, Greg Sholette (Repohistory), Tom Krens and Nick Zammutto (The Books) will be included in this auction.
Autographed copies of individual and collected literature and musical recordings, photographs, paintings, prints, furniture, drawings will be auctioned, as will certificates for dinners, performances and vacation opportunities in Puerto Rico and NYC. Wine and light fare will be served during the evening’s events.

The Greylock chapter is a part of the national A Better Chance program that enables talented and motivated students of color from under-resourced communities to attend strong secondary schools. The Greylock chapter each year has up to eight students, who during the academic year live with resident directors in the ABC House in Williamstown and attend Mt. Greylock Regional H. S. Since its founding in 1968 the Greylock Chapter has helped place almost 100 students on a different life path, including in almost every case attendance at a top college or university.

e-flux is pleased to announce the opening of the Martha Rosler Library at 53 Ludlow Street in New York City on Tuesday, November 15th, 2005 at 6pm. Comprising more than 6,000 volumes selected from the books at Martha Rosler’s residence and studio in Brooklyn and academic office in New Jersey, the library will be accessible for public use through April 15, 2006, at the Ludlow street location. Library hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12-6 PM.
1. Library – a: a place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials (such as books, manuscripts, recordings, or films) are kept for use but not for sale. b: a collection resembling or suggesting a library.
2. In a letter to Samuel Duncan (the Associate Librarian/Cataloguer of the Amon Carter Museum), Rick Stewart (the Museum’s Chief Curator) recounts a recent trip to Marfa: “The Judd house was recently opened for private tours, and I took one last June. The library is truly impressive, but there are serious problems. There is no climate control, and the books–many of which have not even been taken out of their wrapping papers–are suffering the consequences. Judd bought an amazing array of stuff in many subject fields. Apparently, there are bizarre aspects to his legacy: the books cannot be used.”
3. “Like the suburbs, too, Smithson’s library is entropic, with the multifarious variety of books, journals, and records intermingling and coalescing to form a homogeneous mass. The significance of each of the parts shifts in favor of the meaning they acquire in their relationship to each other and to their owner. Alone as a monad, each item in the catalogue has its own life and meaning. Yet, as part of a larger collection, the books, journals, and records form constellations; this alters their meanings considerably. For instance, the hallucinatory novels of William S. Burroughs–when brought together with historical studies of ancient civilizations, a coterie of psychedelic and glam-rock records and anthropological texts by George Bataille and Claude Levi-Strauss–assume meanings considerably different from those they would take on in other configurations.”

Martha Rosler was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she now lives, after spending the 1970s in California. She works in video, photo-text, installation, sculpture, and performance, and writes on aspects of culture. She is a renowned teacher and has lectured widely, nationally and internationally. Rosler’s work is centered on everyday life and the public sphere, often with an eye to women’s experience. Recurrent concerns are the media and war as well as architecture and the built environment, from housing and homelessness to systems of transport. Her work has been seen in the Venice Biennale of 2003; the Liverpool Biennial and the Taipei Biennial (both 2004); as well as many major international survey shows, including Open Systems at the Tate Modern (2005). Her work has been included in the “Documenta” exhibition in Kassel, Germany, and several Whitney biennials, and she has had numerous solo exhibitions. She has been invited to participate in SkulpturProjecte07 in Münster. A retrospective of her work, “Positions in the Life World,” was shown in five European cities and at the International Center of Photography and the New Museum for Contemporary Art (both in New York), concurrently (1998-2000). Rosler has published ten books of photography, art, and writing. Among them are Decoys and Disruptions: Selected Essays 1975-2001 (MIT Press, 2004, An October Book, in conjunction with the International Center of Photography), the photo books Passionate Signals (Cantz, 2005), In the Place of the Public: Airport Series (Cantz, 1997), and Rites of Passage (NYFA, 1995). If You Lived Here (Free Press, 1991) addresses her Dia project on housing, homelessness, and urban life. Several other books are in preparation. Rosler has been awarded the Spectrum International Prize in Photography for 2005. The prize was accompanied by a photo and video retrospective, “If Not Now, When?” at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and NGBK in Berlin. Her solo exhibition, “London Garage Sale,” was held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in early June. She will have a solo exhibition at Christian Nagel ( Berlin) in January 2006 and at the University in Rennes in Spring 2006.
