3. Larry List, FF Alumn, at Noguchi Museum, Jan 8, 2006, 3pm

Franklin Furnace alumni artist/curator Larry List will present a talk The Imagery of Chess Revisited, Sunday, January 8 th at 3 P.M. at The Noguchi Museum, 32-37 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City. This talk accompanies the exhibition and book of the same title on view until March 5 th, 2006.

The Imagery of Chess Revisited is the first major museum exhibition to explore and reprise one of the legendary events in the history of twentieth-century art: the 1944–45 exhibition The Imagery of Chess, organized by Surrealist masters Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst for the Julien Levy Gallery, in New York. The Imagery of Chess Revisited includes more than eighty chess sets, sculptures, paintings, photos, musical compositions and other chess-themed works by architects, designers, musicians, librarians, and even a world renowned Freudian analyst.

In addition to Duchamp and Ernst, participants included such famous European expatriates and soon-to-be famous American modernists as Alexander Calder, Arshile Gorky, Man Ray, Robert Motherwell, Isamu Noguchi, Yves Tanguy, Frederick and Steffi Kiesler, John Cage and Dorothea Tanning, among others.  A resounding popular and critical success, the event marked a turning point in America’s embrace of modernism, which signaled the shift from Paris to New York as the epicenter of avant-garde art.

See how the vanguard artists of a previous era broke with tradition and responded to world war through their exploration of history, ritual warfare, courtly love, high tech materials, camouflage techniques, sexuality, violence, intoxication, and mythology.

T he Imagery of Chess Revisited is accompanied by a fully illustrated, 224-page book of the same name, published by George Braziller Inc. The book contains a foreword by Bonnie Rychlak, curator, The Noguchi Museum; essays by Mr. List; Ingrid Shaffner, senior curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and a noted authority on Julien Levy; musicologist Lowell Cross with Paul B. Franklin, editor-in-chief of Étant Donné, the journal devoted to the life and work of Duchamp; and Lanier Graham, professor of art history, California State University, Hayward.  Also included are reprints of reviews of the original 1944 exhibition and remembrances of the exhibition by Julien Levy, Dorothea Tanning, and others.

Public Programs

A full roster of public programs will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition, including panel discussions, guided tours, and workshops for families and children. Another January highlight will be Jennifer Shahade vs. the World! on Saturday, January 14. This world-renowned U.S. chess champion and author from Williamsburg will play a game against each museum visitor. Each Saturday and Sunday shuttle buses run from 70 th Street and Park Avenue to the Museum and back. For more information visit www.noguchi.org
