Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard (collaborators for 17 years) have created an ACT UP NY Oral History Video Archive, that will go live on November 26th with the first 35 interviews at www.actuporalhistory.org. The site is only one year into a long process of interviewing surviving members of ACT UP NY about how they changed the world and saved their own lives.

I am so excited about this concert. The soprano has beautiful diction as well as a lovely voice. The Belgian string quartet is exquisite. Joseph Kubera premiered the piano concerto in 1997 and this is Kyle Gann’s favorite piece of mine. All the musicians are wonderful. The words to The Angel are from a Hans Christian Andersen story, with the story within the story set to lyrics by Anthony Calabrese used by permission of Gail Calabrese. The repertoire on this concert (except for Flute Swale) will be out on a New World CD in 2004. You are heartily encouraged to attend. Two video biographies from the LOWER EAST SIDE BIOGRAPHY PROJECT will be screened this evening. The LES BIO PROJECT is part of a weekly biography series seen on Manhattan s public access cable channel, Manhattan Neighborhood Network, MNN. The biographies in this program include two of the most renowned and enduring personalities of the Lower East Side art world, TAYLOR MEAD and JONES MEKAS.
After the screenings, there will be a live LES Bio interview with Jonas Mekas conducted by Penny Arcade. In celebration of the late Jack Smith s birthday on this date, we hope to play some unique audio and video clips.

Disinherited from his wealthy and powerful Michigan banking family before moving to New York and becoming an actor, this Lower East Side icon was sought out by Andy Warhol and became part of the inner circle at the Factory and a regular cast member in Warhol’s films. The Lower East Side Biography Project
– stemming the tide of cultural amnesia –
The Lower East Side Biography Project, (LES Bio Project), is an oral history project, archive and community media program. It honors the spirit of its community’s history and reclaims the values of individualism, authenticity & rebellion by connecting those values back to their source in the form of video biographies on the community s long-term residents. Funded by Manhattan Neighborhood Network, (MNN), the LES Bio Project runs a media training program that instructs individuals in all aspects of digital video production. It’s members attend workshops and then apply their new skills by working within small production teams to shoot, edit and direct their own biography segment. The project stems the tide of cultural amnesia in the rapidly changing Lower East Side by creating a dialogue between the project’s biography subjects, and newcomers to the city and the neighborhood. In addition to creating biographies, the LES Bio Project routinely documents live events.
The LES Bio Project is co-produced by Penny Arcade and Steve Zehentner, and associate produced by Dean Lance. I’ve organized a 90-minute program featuring my laptop/video storytelling and performances by three exceptional musicians. The event is called The Psychasthenia Society, and it happens on Monday, November 24, 7:30 p.m. at Galapagos. Each artist will present work mediated by portable electronics.

Jon Keith Brunelle — excerpts from The Hammer Variations, a digital/live remix of Kiss Me Deadly.
lloop — renowned laptop musician, delivering gorgeous layered textures over a steady groove.
Bit Shifter — low-bit, high-energy music composed and performed on a Nintendo Game Boy.
burun — always something unexpected; her iBook might send us a maze-like sound collage or a brisk dance laced with Japanese animation dialogue.
I’ll host the event and give three short performances, alternating with a 20-minute set by each musician. This will be a tight program, featuring some of the best work by New York artists whose instruments are laptop computers and related devices.

L’Ile is the long-awaited sequel to Fiona Templeton’s legendary 1988 play, YOU-The City, *an intimate Manhattanwide play for an audience of one* published by Roof Books, New York, and recreated in London, Ljubljana, Den Haag, Zürich, München, Rotterdam and Hamburg.
L’Ile (The Island) begins with a hundred simultaneous appointments across the city, each for a single *dreamer*. The dreamer lives the recreated dreams of the city’s inhabitants, played by a network of actors and local volunteers. The web of routes and encounters leads, in growing groups, to a final convergence of all the dreams in the city’s centre.

Formatted as a traditional Latino quince años, a coming-of-age-ceremony in which girls formally celebrate their transition to womanhood, this piece consists of an exhaustive audio-visual presentation performed collaboratively by an artist, a curator, a gallery coordinator, a flower girl, a theramin player, a waiter and group of invited curators.
Recuento de mis 15 looks at professional roles and questions the established art world’s methods of validating an artist’s work, inviting those present to delve simultaneously into the private and the public; the institutional and the personal, into what is real and what is staged. Guests at this event get an inside look at Estévez’s upbringing as well as his education, exhibitions, awards, residencies and rejection letters through a presentation that includes detailed projections of his five-page resume.
In this performance, as in some of his previous work, Estevez continues to work with the audience, inviting it to become participant and therefore to affect the development of the piece.

Vagamundo is a mobile public art project designed for on the street interaction to create temporary public commons. Through a mobile cart resembling an ice cream cart pedestrians are invited to play a video game that reflects the plight of undocumented immigrants in New York. The Uptown Arts Stroll, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will link a dozen locations – restaurants, civic groups, service providers – from West 168th Street to West 207th Street, on both sides of Broadway. Additionally, some local artists are inviting the public into their studios and homes in an unprecedented effort to promote the deep wellspring of creative talent in our neighborhoods.

This seminal 12:00min. video features the artist discussing episodes in which she had experienced racial discrimination. These straightforward segments are interspersed with scenes of her playing a condescending white woman or wrapping her head in white gauze.

You are cordially invited to an entertaining evening of literary exposition starring Alexander Komlosi, my best friend, from Prague, The Czech Republic, on Monday, December 1st at 8PM chez Douglas (that’s moi) in New York City. Alexander, a Master of Drama from the Academy of Performing Arts, Prague, desires an English-speaking audience of the finest creative souls in New York to dazzle with his writings.
