During The Reception Nora York Will Sing A Song At 7pm And 8pm & Each Saturday During The Exhibition At 3pm And 3:30 Pm
Vistas Along Empty Highways, A Crowded City Overpass, Ocean Breezes, Flowers At The Beach, Will Push The Walls Outward. These Environments Will Be Populated By A Naked Gunman, A Golden Infant Sleeping In A Lotus Flower, And A Virgin Talking To A Serpent. There Will Be Cars, Airplanes, Animals And People Everywhere. The Artwork In Big Cry Baby Are Both Cast Members And Locations. A Rubber Suitcase Waits By A Door, A Lead Flashlight Is On The Floor Next To A Pair Of Rubber Binoculars With Tree Roots Growing From Its Lenses. Falling Memories Float Downward From The Ceiling. There’s Even A Suspense Filled Attic.
Smack Mellon is easily accessible by either the F or the A/C subways. F: Get off at the York Street Station . There is only one exit (back of the train if coming from Mahattan) which is at the intersection of York and Jay streets. Take a left on York Street and cross under the Manhattan Bridge for three blocks. Make a right on Washington street toward the river. At Water street, make a left for two more blocks. A/C: Get off at the High Street Station . Take St. George Exit to Cadman Plaza W. Walk down to River Cafe and take a right on Water Street one block to Smack Mellon. On Foot: Enjoy the beautiful walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The first set of stairs you reach in Brooklyn will drop you of on Washington street. Take a left out of the stairwell and walk down the hill for three blocks. Take another left on Water street.

“Subject Matters” A Panel Discussion

Concurrent to the exhibition: “Reading between the Lines” curated by Joyce Kozloff
To begin the evening, the artists in the exhibition (Jeannie Crosby, Judith
Henry, Ann Messner, Julia Randall, Mira Schor and Barbara Zucker), will briefly
introduce themselves and their work.
A panel discussion on the matter of subject and subject that matters: how content determines the drive of the artist to make, and how that content does or does not also determine the form the work takes.
Moderator: Barbara Pollack
Panelists: Anna Chave, Lia Gangitano, Grady Turner, Christian Viveros-Faune, Alexi Worth. Anna Chave, who is known for “Minimalism and the Rhetoric of Power” and other articles, as well as books on Rothko and Brancusi, is Professor of Art History at Queens College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
Lia Gangitano is Founder/Director of PARTICIPANT INC, a not-for-profit art space on the Lower East Side. During four years as curator of Thread Waxing Space, New York, she curated numerous exhibitions, screenings and performances, including Spectacular Optical. She is currently editing a book about the history of the space, The Alternative to What? Thread Waxing Space and the 90s. Formerly Associate Curator at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, she co-curated exhibitions including Dress Codes and Boston School.
Barbara Pollack is an artist who writes frequently on contemporary art. She is a contributing editor to ARTnews, as well as a regular contributor to Art in America, TimeOut NY, The Village Voice, The New York Times, Art on Paper
and Art & Auction. She has had solo shows at the Holly Solomon Gallery, Thread
Waxing Space, Trans>area, and Esso Gallery, which represents her work.
Grady Turner is a curator and art critic based in New York. He publishes regularly in Art in America, ARTnews, Flash Art, The New York Times and Bomb, where he is a contributing editor. He is the author of NYC SEX: How New York City Transformed Sex in America.
Christian Viveros-Faune is a critic, curator and the director of Roebling Hall in Brooklyn and Satellite in Soho. During his four years as art critic for NYPress, he wrote more than 100 reviews. He has also written for many other national and international publications, such as Art In America, ARTnews, The New Yorker.
Alexi Worth is a painter and writer. His next exhibit will be at the Bill Maynes Gallery this upcoming spring, his writing appears in The New Yorker and Artforum. He is also a senior critic at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of the Arts.

Women, Art, and Technology

Although women have been at the forefront of art and technology creation, no source has adequately documented their core contributions to the field. Women, Art, and Technology, which originated in a Leonardo project of the same name, is a compendium of the work of women artists who have played a central role in the development of new media practice.
The book features overviews of the history and foundations of the field by critic/curator Patric Prince; critic Margaret Morse; artist/educator Sheila Pinkel; artist/networker Anna Couey; and Kathy Brew, artist and former director of the new media initiative ThunderGulch. The foreword was written by Patricia Bentson, managing editor of the Leonardo Music Journal.
Artist contributors include computer graphics artists Rebecca Allen, Donna Cox, and Diane Fenster; video artists Dara Birnbaum, Joan Jonas, Valerie Soe, and Steina Vasulka; composers Cécile Le Prado, Pauline Oliveros, and Pamela Z; interactive artists Jennifer Hall and Blyth Hazen, Agnes Hegedüs, Lynn Hershman, Nancy Paterson, and Sonya Rapoport; virtual reality artists Char Davies and Brenda Laurel; net artists Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss, and Sandy Stone; and choreographer Dawn Stoppiello. Critics include Jaishree Odin, Simone Osthoff, and Zoë Sofia.

THE ART OF BURNING MAN
LEONARDO Volume 36, Number 5
The international journal LEONARDO, a publication dedicated to art and technology and published by the MIT Press, has collaborated with The Burning Man Project to publish a special section featuring The Art of Burning Man. In the October 2003 issue, 20 artists discuss the creative aspects of designing and building art for Burning Man. Among the many art mediums discussed are fire, water, lasers, LED light, metal, telestereo optics and fractal audio. Each essay is illustrated with a photo of the artwork.
The Burning Man Special Section includes an introduction by Guest Editor Louis M. Brill: Desert Weirdness Introduces a New Era of Art; and a feature article by Burning Man art curator Christine Kristen (a.k.a. LadyBee): The Outsider Art of Burning Man.
Artists’ essays are divided into four themes as follows:
