In July, 2003 C-level began development of Waco Resurrection, its first chapter of Endgames, a new 3D Third Person Shooter multiplayer computer game series based on alternative utopias and apocalyptic moments. The Endgames series attempts to incorporate elements of subjective documentary and experimental fantasy with game development technology to create a visceral gaming experience focused on extreme psycho-social phenomena.

élan presents a new dance and mixed media project, mech[a] and OUTPUT by koosil-ja in collaboration with Benton-C Bainbridge (live video), Geoff Matters (music), and Liminal Projects, Omar Khan & Laura Garófalo (environmental design).
Preview performances run November 19 – 23, 26 – 30 (no show on 27), and December 3-7, and premiere performances run December 10-14 and 17- 21. All performances are Wednesday-Sunday at 8 pm at élan in NEST, 88 Front Street at Washington Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn. mech[a] and OUTPUT is a new dance and mixed media project by koosil-ja in collaboration with Benton-C Bainbridge (live video), Geoff Matters (music), and Liminal Projects, Omar Khan & Laura Garófalo (environmental design). The project explores the relationship between resistance and creativity. mech[a] is a dance of restraint, based on koosil-ja’s study of the dances of the Noh-play ³DOJOJI², using the form as a vehicle and a self-imposed enclosure to arrive at an opening into a powerful internal narrative. OUTPUT is a state of suspension, existing moments before the activation of the proscenium, in a state of potential. koosil-ja sequenced one hundred video clips sampled from various movies, treating them like music. In her dancing, she passes through this narrative construction. Her collaborators, as a unit of cultural evolution, set a video pendulum in the center of the stage, 20 ft by 20 ft in a 3,000 sq. ft. basement, and seats the audience on four sides. Through mech[a] and OUTPUT, koosil-ja, feeling reticent about “theater”, seeks a way of creating and presenting work that is congenial to its mixed media nature. mech[a] was created with generous funds from Altria Group, Inc., the Japan Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rockefeller Foundation MAP Fund, with support from Material for the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and generous contributions from friends and peers. OUTPUT was created with generous funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.
élan is a part of the residency program designed by NEST in DUMBO Brooklyn, NYC.

koosil-ja a biography
Born in Osaka, Japan of Korean parentage, koosil-ja moved to New York in 1981 to study dance with Merce Cunningham. As a member of the Wendy Perron Dance Company from 1987 to 1989, she was cited by the Boston Phoenix for giving one of the ten best performances of 1989 in Boston. She also danced with Sally Silvers in the late 1980s. In 1984, koosil-ja co-founded the band Bosho as a percussionist and vocalist and toured to over thirty cities in Europe and Japan. She also performed as a percussionist with Takehisha Kosugi, Fast Forward, and as an electronic bass player and samplist with David Linton and Mimi Goese. She composed the music of her most recent dance works memoryscan (1999) and The Anatomy of Happiness (2000). koosil-ja has performed with the Wooster Group in The North Atlantic and created and performed songs with Suzzy Roche and Kate Valk for their work To you the birdies! (Phedre). She also performs her solo electronic music with her laptop at various venues nationally and internationally.
koosil-ja has taught dance composition, Ashtanga Yoga, and Movement classes in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and Portugal. She is a recipient of five National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer Fellowships, and two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships. She has provided residency activities at Harvestworks in NYC, The Yard in Martha’s Vineyard, MA, the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, and in a 1993 United States Residency in Mexico through the National Endowment for the Arts International Program and the Mexican government. koosil-ja has received commissions from Theater Artaud in San Francisco and the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans for cease still I see (1992); from Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, Theater Artaud, and the Washington Performing Arts Society for MASAO (1996); and from The Kitchen and the Rockefeller Foundation Multi Arts Project and New England Foundation for the Arts National Dance Project for memoryscan (1999). This piece, one of her multimedia works, toured to Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia, PA as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and to the Miami Light Project in Miami, Florida. The Anatomy of Happiness, the First Segment (2000) was commissioned by the 92nd Y Harkness Dance Center, and in May 2001 the work was presented at the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris as a full-length piece entitled Render.
Her new dance and mixed media project mech[a] and OUTPUT takes a new approach to creating and presenting work. In February 2003, the company moved into a warehouse in DUMBO, Brooklyn to build a video installation and hold rehearsals, working towards a six-week performance run in November and December. mech[a] was created with funds from the Rockefeller Foundation MAP Fund, the Japan Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, Altria Group, Inc., and the National Endowment for the Arts. OUTPUT was developed as a counterpart to mech[a], and its contrasting approach completes the arc of experimentation on how a form can grow productively under self-imposed resistance. OUTPUT was created with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Jeff McMahon, FF Alumn will premiere Honorable Discharge: a 15-minute monologue written for performer Lance Gharavi, juxtaposing the killing of a suicidal 15 year old by Mesa, AZ police with the ongoing situation in Iraq, while examining the illusions and assumptions of security. The piece uses multiple voices and attitudes, quotes from news reports, Henry IV, and Tom Sawyer, and the metaphor of discharge and distance, to generate a debate on the use of force. Honorable Discharge will premiere at Modified Arts in Phoenix, AZ on October 25 as part of “Teatro Caliente” produced by Theatre in My Basement. www.TIMB.org and www.jeffmcmahonprojects.net

One of the most important contemporary visual artists practicing today, Graham is widely recognized for his involvement in the advent of conceptual art, and his works over the past 38 years have consistently explored the social conditions of cognition and perception. His early text and magazine based works were closely followed by groundbreaking experiments in video and film and, and since the early 1980s, the creation of outdoor pavilions in glass, mirror and steel. He is an accomplished writer whose texts weave intricate links between interests in pop culture, punk rock, urbanism, architectural history and visual criticism. Taken together, the myriad aspects of his artistic production are a singular achievement in contemporary art.
Graham’s work is also instrumental in the development of Vancouver based photo-conceptualism, and his long involvement and friendship with a number of locally based artists has been of enormous influence. This exhibition showcases a small cross-section of the artist’s work in an effort to familiarize local audiences with the extent and range of his production, too little seen here, and to contextualize the importance of Graham’s practice. Presented for the first time in Vancouver is the seminal 1970-72 two part film Body Press, as well as architectural plans for the Children’s Pavilion-Graham’s ongoing collaboration with local artist Jeff Wall-alongside a selection of works spanning three decades of the artists production.
A tour of the exhibition, led by curator Reid Shier, will be held on Saturday, October 18 at 2:00 pm at the Contemporary Art Gallery.

Reverend Billy will follow with his yearly “State-of-the-Dollar-Buy-Nothing-Everyday” sermon, and we will hear testimony from The People. Together, we will challenge the absurd international economy –a system that profits so few and controls so many. The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will remind us how joyous freedom from Consumerism truly is. BUY NOTHING DAY is A REALLY GOOD TIME

“WARAID” by screaMachine @ D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival. screaMachine presents “WARAID”, an installation and technology enhanced performance piece running on Saturday night, October 18th, from 8pm to midnight, as part of the Simultaneous Projections event. Multiple outdoor projections on the corner of Jay and Water Streets will be further enlivened by the artist operating his V.R.A.G. projection device, mixing video clips live and beaming them around the location.Three video projections, featuring images from the U.S. 2003 invasion of Iraq, are located on three walls on the corner of Jay and Water Streets. The artist operates the V.R.A.G. from the center of the open space enclosed by the projections. The artist intermittently performs with the unit, beaming images of helicopters, airplanes and other air attack vehicles (along with related audio) onto the buildings surrounding the space (including buildings across the streets). All the clips projected are high contrast black & white, iconic images, removed from looking realistic, yet dominating and disturbing. Air raids, emanating from the V.R.A.G. sweep the area unannounced and disappear. An ephemeral, imaginary war is enacted on these American walls and buildings, bringing images of destruction and domination without any physicality. The piece has an aesthetic beauty and contrasted horror, causing the viewer to experience conflict and requesting of them an evaluation of their attitudes towards the invasion. “waRAID” uses scale and detail reduction to re-present war images on architectural surfaces and locations, to bring home that which before was experienced via TV

“xeShow” presents multimedia performance works by three European artists who deconstruct issues related to sexuality and the body.
Aine Phillips’ work investigates the personal and public face of maternity, abortion and female sexuality, exposing cultural contradictions and our own unease with such subjects. Phillips, from Ireland, is Head of Sculpture at The Burren College of Art in Ireland and has recently performed at the National Review of Live Art in Glasgow, Scotland.
Jana Leo deconstructs the peep show and porn industry which play upon male desires and needs, flatten them out, while often subjugating working women. She removes the power of the participating voyeur by blinding or immobilizing, and turns the audience into voyeurs of the participant. She defines public / private, desire / need, watching / touching in relationship to distance. Leo, from Spain, a PhD candidate on philosophy is on faculty at Cooper Union School of Architecture and is currently showing at the Triennial at the ICP.
Gearoid Dolan a.k.a. screaMachine, dissects the religious, social and mass media indoctrination as relates to male sexuality. The audience witnesses his endurance of these burdens. Dolan, also from Ireland, is on faculty at Cooper Union School of Art and has shown extensively internationally this year, including New Forms Festival Vancouver, Canada; International Festival of Electronic Language, Sao Paulo Brazil; X-fest, New York and is a recipient of a New York State Council on the Arts Film, Video and New Media Award.
The artists each present their body and actions with no sense of guilt or pleasure. They are sexual beings presenting sexual topics in a non-sexual manner. The deconstruction and re-presentation of images and actions that are normally reserved for adult titillation or take place in the privacy of a home or medical facility, serve to diminish the power given to them by our (Western) cultural/social institutions.
