WHAT: a performance: La Llorona: Weeping Women on Skid Row
WHEN: August 28 and August 31, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Church of the Nazarene, northwest. corner San Pedro St & 6th St
(across the street from the Weingart Center). Los Angeles, CA
WHY:to bring attention to the great increase in numbers of women and children living on Skid Row.
“La Llorona; Weeping Women on Skid Row”, LAPD’s Summer -Fall 2003 production, is directed by Henriette Brouwers. Dutch director, Henriette Brouwers has performed and directed movement / theater in Europe and the US. This performance is based on the Mexican legend of La Llorona (the weeping woman), who wanders the earth in search of her lost / abandoned children. The legend becomes the through line for relating the personal journeys of the 14 men and women in the cast. The performance is composed of original movement, text and song. This collective creation, La Llorona, offers deeply felt, multiple perspectives and insights into the causes as well as the personal struggles of the most rapidly growing segment of the homeless population: women and children.
Since 1985 LAPD has offered performance workshops that are free and open to the Skid Row community. LAPD ‘s mission is to create performance work that connects lived experience to the social forces that shape the lives and communities of people living in poverty. The Poverty Department is committed to creating high-quality, challenging performance works that express the realities, hopes and dreams of people who live on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. LAPD is dedicated to building community and to the artistic and personal development of its members.
LAPD’s production of “La Llorona; Weeping Women on Skid Row”, is funded by
the City of LA Cultural Affairs Department , NEA Theater and the California Arts Council. In addition to the August 28 and 31 performances, the performance will be presented November 14, 2003, at Scripps College, in Claremont, as part of a national conference on Women and Poverty.

The Kitchen kicks off its Fall 2003 season with a pep rally for the Fifth Anniversary of its Neighborhood Street Fair. Drawing more than 600 people last year, this popular event celebrates the diversity of the West Chelsea community by offering an eclectic menu of free outdoor performances, interactive events for children and adults, and the best in local cuisine.
New York State Senator Richard N. Gottfried, who returns for the third time as the event’s featured speaker, has called The Kitchen, “one of the best, earliest, longest-lasting downtown cultural organizations. You could call it ‘the downtown Lincoln Center.’ I’m looking forward to another good time celebrating our neighborhood at The Kitchen’s Street Fair.”
Main stage festivities feature a Brazilian samba processional down 19th Street; a Chinese lion dance; Salsa sensation Fred Dejesus and his band Conjunto Placer; Qool DJ Marv spinning beats; hooting by the Hoboken Devils cheerleaders, and rooting by performance artists Wanted: X-Cheerleaders. Bawdy sibling performers the Wau Wau Sisters preside over the event with trapeze and circus tricks, acrobatics, original songwriting, audacious costumes and impure thoughts.
Check out surprise acts by street performers, including Nancy Hwang’s interactive ice cream eating installation I Scream; a mobile sound environment by Carrie Dashow, Matt Bun and Jesse Bercowitz; a live radio broadcast from a pushcart by Ricardo Zuñiga; bubble makers blowing dreams by conceptual collective Praxis; Diana Carulli’s giant street labyrinth; Electronic Chaircuts by Nelson; Cirque Boom’s messianic clown ensemble Divine Carriage; Turbo Twins Nicole and Leesa Abahuni’s misting environment Array; performance artist Jess Dobkin’s marrying frenzy I Do to All of You; as well as free caricatures, finger puppets with personality, body art, and much more. Cool off at block neighbors Gasser-Grunert, Postmasters and David Zwirner Galleries, and visit The Kitchen Art Gallery’s screenings of early video performances by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.

800 Jobs
produced and written by Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer based on their interview with Nasser ElGabry music collage by Scott Johnson and Sheldon Steiger
800 Jobs is one of nineteen cuts from the Crossing the BLVD audio CD. Nasser ElGabry helped his friend Labib clean up his café after it was ransacked by four young men, five nights after the September 11th attach on the Twin Towers. You need to get the book if you want to read about that. Here in 800 Jobs, Nasser describes some of the many jobs he’s had in the United States.
Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors, aliens in a new America is a multimedia project that portrays the largely invisible lives and voices of new immigrants and refugees in the borough of Queens New York – the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States. For three years, documentary artists Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan traveled the world by trekking the streets of their home borough. The result is a 400 page, full color book and companion audio CD (published by W.W. Norton, Sept. 15, 2003- www.wwnorton.com), a series of public radio documentaries, an exhibition, a performance and an interactive website.
