1. Barbara Rosenthal, FF Alumn, new publications
Barbara Rosenthal held a book party July 15 at Westbeth Arts Complex for five new books from Xanadu Press and Washington Street Press, the two imprints of Homo Futurus (TM) Editions issued by her studio, eMediaLoft.org. The books and party are currently reviewed online and in print in the August edition of the “Village Star-Review.” “Poetry and Books in the Downtown Continuum,” the lengthy article by Steve DiLauro, lists some of the notables who attended the party, including Victor Bockris, Dawoud Bey, Alex Harsley and Atanasio Di Felice.
Xanadu Press is a collaborative image-text venture, wherein Barbara Rosenthal develops photo-based imagery aligning with the work of poets. “Erato Inbox” collages Jeffrey Cyphers Wright’s 100-page poem, A.I. and drawings with some of Rosenthal’s color Surreal Photos. “Odd Men Out (or in)” by Barry Wallenstein balances his chapbook of single-page poems with Rosenthal’s NYC black and white street photos from the 1970s.
Washington Street Press publishes fiction, non-fiction, and monographs. This time WSP issued a chic lit chapbook, “This is What I Owe You” by librarian Kristin Hart; “Photocriticus Interruptus” by photo critic A. D. Coleman with gallerist Alex Harsley; and a 300 page photographic monograph by Sena Clara Creston, Assistant Professor of Art, Sonoma College, which is wordless except for intro by photographer Mark Jacobson. Robin Tewes
Art House Gallery group exhibition “Artist Narrator”
Currated by Art House Gallery and Izzy Nova.
The primary theme of this exhibition is the narrative in painting, one of the oldest genres of storytelling, as expressed through the work of four contemporary painters reflecting their time and worldview. Although each artist brings a personal perspective to the narrative, the artworks portray a cohesive intersectionality of class, gender, sexuality, untraditional beauty, and psychology.
Graupe-Pillard’s powerful and unromanticized portraits capture the ineffable moments of our lives, which can be both bitter and sweet, revealing our shared humanity. Similarly, Surbone’s large-scale portraits capture the carnality and individuality of her subjects, exploring societal beauty standards and sexual identity. In Tewes’ subtly surreal work, she explores issues of class, gender, and the subconscious. Her jewel-like paintings of interiors, with or without people, initially tell a story of contemporary life. Schlesinger’s paintings and mixed media collages explore self-portraiture and lesbian sexuality. The narrative implicit in her Tomboy and Lesbian Bar paintings is the historically hidden experiences of that culture.

“Memorializing the Hibakusha Experience,” a commemoration exhibition 80 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Wilmington College, Ohio, August 6 – December 15, 2025. Slavick will conduct a cyanotype workshop during the exhibition and participate on an exhibition panel “Archives as Witness”.

An eclectic afternoon of short films and documentaries that explore gender, identity, culture, and creative expression.
“The Gender Symphony” – 14 minutes
Directed by Phoebe Legere
A visually rich blend of Commedia dell’Arte and hand-drawn animation, The Gender Symphony tells the story of Columbina, a servant transformed by a magical accident, who challenges the authoritarian Dr. Pants in a surreal duel. Featuring Ivan Galietti (Fellini’s Casanova), Lorenzo Pozzan (Queer, 2024), and Phoebe Legere. The film uses hand-crafted costumes made from recycled materials, lush original music, and archetypal storytelling to explore contemporary gender politics.

“Mixed Messages” – 19 minutes
Directed by Kathy Brew
An experimental video collage originally created in 1989–1990, Mixed Messages critiques gender stereotypes in media and culture using a mix of found footage, animation, interviews with girls, and performance. Inspired by a young girl’s audition piece (“I Enjoy Being a Girl”), the video offers a feminist lens on the messaging received by the next generation.
Decades later, it continues to resonate in the wake of the “Me Too” movement and the erosion of reproductive rights.
As featured in Hyperallergic (2020): “A potent and timely work of media criticism.”
“Following the Thread” – 22 minutes
Directed by Kathy Brew
A documentary exploring Indigenous textile traditions in the Peruvian Andes. Through intimate portraits of weavers and the communities supported by the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco (CTTC), the film addresses the threats of cultural erasure, economic exploitation, and intellectual property theft. Featuring ceremonial rituals, natural dyeing techniques, and weaving demonstrations, the film honors both the artistry and the resilience of the Andean people.
“Sparrow” – 30 minutes
Directed by Paul Smart and Eduardo Padilla
Sparrow: Hecho en Guanajuato follows Hudson Valley-based poet and essayist Sparrow on a poetic journey through the winding streets and tunnels of Guanajuato, Mexico. Accompanied by filmmaker and former Phoenicia Times editor Paul Smart and local poet Eduardo Padilla, the film weaves conversation, observation, and lyrical commentary into a reflective portrait of place and creativity.

The Traveling Tap Museum is a mobile exhibition and set for presentations about tap dancing. In any location, the tap mat can roll out for “feets on” live performances by Goldberg and some of her colleagues. The dancers tell anecdotal stories about the pictures, sing songs and perform classic and modern tap routines.
Jane will be joined by dancers Christina Carminucci (CTTI 2023-24), Conner Kelly, Sarah Safford and Cartier Williams.
