In Our Own Voice is a collection of Dominican voices that, with the timbre of their pronouncements, trace a sociocultural and political record of what has been a large part of the Dominican migratory experience in the United States. The analyses and testimonies that comprise the written body of this anthology will serve as reference material for those who feel the need to study and understand the narrative of the multifaceted Dominican migratory experience in a country like the United States, which, with its imposing regional and global presence, has shaped the past, present, and future of the Dominican nation.
In our own voice, an army of 37 authors assume the narrative lead, ready to share with us the most varied interpretative expressions about the Dominican subject of our American diaspora and its profound implications for their sociopolitical and cultural relationship with the Dominican Republic. From the meticulous academic approach to the passionate and sensitive testimony, as well as from the linguistic weave of literary analysis, we celebrate having survived a migratory process that has placed us in the depths of a society that daily tests our ability to preserve our integrity as a human group, while forging one of the largest and most hardworking communities in the United States.
All that said, of course, I am not proposing a romantic position about what we are and what we do to embrace ourselves as subjects immersed in American society. Quite the contrary. I proclaim that we are not a monolithic unit that, like a herd, heads toward the same sociocultural and political watering hole. No. The history of our presence in the United States has a much more complex and fluid historical record, impossible to categorize into a single ideological box.

We’re leaving. I speak of the audacity of writing as a performance, or as a performative gesture. But this time I propose to myself to delve even deeper into these matters to channel a text with bare hands. In this way. From the intellectuality of the body, from memory and lived experience, and using the language of the Plebeian Academy of the Dominican+x Language. Nothing royal about this, and just the right amount of reality. No more, no less. As for terms, I’ll elucidate them as I go deeper into this sugarcane field. As for the thong curators, in due time. I assure you it’s worth the wait. Finally, I’m speaking these words from a covered terrace in the beloved South Bronx.

Eddy Falconer’s This Could Be ((2022) has been screening all July at Electra Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and continues until August 23. Their latest video, Return to Valhalla, opens Aug 7 as part of Fugue State, a program of Dissociative Productions, at LA Center for Digital Arts on Spring St in DTLA

3. Kimsooja, FF Alumn, awarded Officer Medal of the French Order of Arts and Letters

Kimsooja has been awarded the reputable Officier medal of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government in recognition of her contributions to global art and cultural exchange. The artist received the honor during a ceremony held Wednesday at the residence of the French ambassador to Korea in Seoul. Her promotion to Officier reflects her ongoing creative work and her role in encouraging cross-cultural dialogue between France, Korea, and the broader international art community.
The Order of Arts and Letters was established by the French Ministry of Culture in 1957 as a recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and culture in France and around the world. The award is composed of three grades: Commandeur (Commander), Officier (Officer) and Chevalier (Knight). Kimsooja has now been elevated to the second-highest rank, Officier, after being named a Chevalier in 2017.
Ever since Kimsooja studied lithography at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1984, she has been a renowned artist in France for over four decades. In 2024, she became the first Korean artist to be given “Carte blanche” at the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris, where she presented the solo-exhibition To Breathe – Constellation. The honor grants her complete artistic freedom for the show.
“I have been fortunate to realize many monumental projects over the last four decades by exchanging inspiration with the artists and cultural figures in France who have shown unwavering love and support for my work,” Kimsooja said during the ceremony. “I am deeply grateful for my second home, France, for this recognition.”

Nuclear Age @80 (1945-2025)
A selection of Peter d’Agostino’s video projects to coincide with the 80th Anniversary of the Nuclear Age. D’Agostino was born in July 1945, ‘between the bombs’: A-bomb test in the U.S. July 16; and the bombings of Hiroshima, August 6, Nagasaki, August 9. Over the decades, his videos have been created at significant historic sites, including Hiroshima’s Peace Ceremonies. The program features excerpts from: A-bomb @ 80, TRACES, TRACES: virtual installation, VR-RV: a Recreational Vehicle in Virtual Reality, Doomsday March.
Peter d’Agostino’s pioneering video, photography, and new media projects have been exhibited internationally for over five decades. His work was in the biennial exhibitions of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Gwangju, South Korea; Whitney Museum of American Art; collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive; Oakland Museum of California; Nasher Art Museum; National Gallery of Canada; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Charleroi, Belgium; LaCaixaForum, Barcelona, among others. One of my iconic photos taken of Kathy Acker in front of the San Francisco Art Institute back in 1991 when we both worked there (she was teaching, I was the Humanities Department manager with Ray Mondini), is being included in this exhibit at San Francisco MoMA, opening this Saturday, July 26 and will run for the entire next year, through July 5, 2026.

We warmly invite you to join us for a memorial celebration and exhibition honoring the life and legacy of Nancy Azara––visionary sculptor, feminist educator, and spiritual practitioner––taking place September 18-21 in Woodstock, New York.
Nancy’s work, rooted in nature, memory, and the divine feminine, opened portals between art and spirit. This gathering will feature a curated selection of her carved wood sculptures, mixed media collages, scrolls, banners, and prints, alongside shared moments of remembrance and ritual.
In a powerful continuation of their shared creative journey, Darla Bjork, Nancy’s beloved partner of over 40 years, will present new work made in the wake of Nancy’s crossing––a moving dialogue between grief, devotion, and artistic spirit.
This event is a tribute, a witnessing, and a collective honoring of the sacred path Nancy walked––and carved––for all of us.
